Original copies in printed paper covers are filmed beginning with the front cover and ending on the last page with a printed or illustrated impres- sion, or the back cover when appropriate. All other original copies are filmed beginning on the first page with a printed or illustrated impres- sion, and ending on the last page with a printed or illustrated impression. The last recorded frame on each microfiche shall contain the symbol — ^ (meaning "CON- TINUED"), or the symbol V (meaning "END"), whichever applies. Maps, plates, charts, etc.. may be filmed at different reduction ratios. Those too large to be entirely included in one exposure are filmed beginning in the upper left hand corner, left to right and top to bottom, as many frames as required. POTATO SPRAYING FOR lATE BLIGHT AND ROT. The Lnfc Rlight nnd Kc.t of jiofntotw is one of the most dpstruotivfi plniit (lisf,-o, in the world. Yet this loss cim ho r.^liicd to a vaiiishiiiR point hv thorough and lime},, sprayinp with Bordeaux Jlixture. If tho sprayiiifr ho earefully done it is praotieiillv eortain that it will be a profitable undertaking every year, and a very profitalde ono every year tiiat Late Blipht is prevalent. About five applications will be neeessary. and to be perfectly safe the first should be made when it is necessary to api.ly p.iison for the Coloriuio beetle for tli<^ first time. That will be as a rule about the middle of July. The sueceedinR ones should follow about the end of July, the middh' ..f AuRiist and the end of Aiitriist. and the middle of September, or nt intervals of about two weeks. It is necessary to put on the spray with a sprayinpr machine of such jMiwer that it will force the lii|uid out in the form of a fine mist. It is bettor to put on from .'50 to 100 pallous to the acre. More will do no harm, thouph less may suftice when tho plants are small. Preparation of Bordeaux Mixture. Bordeaux mixture, eontainintr C pounds of copi.er sulphate (bluestone) and t pounds of liine to 40 imperial frallons of water is recoiumcnd.Ml. To prepare this in larpe quantities proceed as follows: — (a) Make a stock solution eontaininar 1 pound of copper sulphate to the frnllon of water. To do this, measure 40 Rallons of water into a barrel, tie up 40 pounds of copper sulphate in n small bap or a piece of canvas, and suspend it just beneath the surface of the water. It will go into solution in this wa.v. Do not use an iron vessel for copper sulphate. {h) Make a stock mixttire of lime water containinjr 1 pound of lime to the jrallon of water. Place 40 pounds (two-thirds of a bushel) of quick lime in a barrel and slak( it by the gradual addition of wat.-r. Air-slaked lime is v.ich'.ix. When thoroughly slaked, add more water, working the lime up with it into a paste, and then fill up witii water to the 40 pallon mark. Cover both barrels to prevent evaporation. Both these solutions will keep pood as lonp as they arc not mixed, and the sprav- inp mixture is made up from them only as it is roMuired. This latter will not kec]. and It should be used the same day as it is made. Run .W gallons of water into the tank of the sprayinp machine, add fi pallons of the stock soiution of copper sulphat. and stir well. :Mix up the stock milk of lime thorouphly and draw off 4 pallons, run ninp it throuph a strainer to keep back the coarser particles. Then stir up the eopiiei- sulphate in the spray tank apain, and while stirrinpr pour in the milk of lime. Tin result is 40 pallons of Bordeaux mixture. Xevor mix the concentrated copper sulphnt. solution with the concentrated milk of lime. The spray must not contain excess of copper sulphate in proportion to lime: i! it does it will burn tho foliape. As lime varies in strenpth the Bordeaux sliouhi b, tested with a testing mixture made of half an ounce of potassium forroeyanido di^ solved in half a pint of water. This substance is poison. Add a drop or two of it t the spray and if a distinct brown colour appears where the drop falls more lime i needed. If not, the mixture is ready to use. The poison for tho Colorado l)eetle can be sui.i)lied with Bordeaux mixture ' combination of half a pound of Paris preen and one and a half pounds of arsenate . lead is recommended. Both substances should be stirred up with water until they ferni a uniform tlr paste, which is then added to the spraying mixture, the whole being well stirred. .V*¥-i-.1 ■»'•»** POINTS IN SPRAYING. Spray before the blig^ht appears. Spray before rainy periods and give the spray time to dry. It won't wash off. Keep the pressure up and cover all parts of the plant. Half spraying won't pay. Don't waste your time and money proving it. Potato spraying is as necessary as fire insurance, and besides it pays a dividend every year.
