The Annual Public Meeting of this Society was held in the Mechanics' Hall, on Wednesday evening, 18th January, 1865, at 7 o'clock. The Most Reverend the Lord Bishop op the Diocese, Metropolitan, in the Chair. Moved by George Moppatt, Jun., Esq. ; seconded by Rev. P. W. Loosemore : 1. Resolved, — That the Report now read be adopted, printed, and cir- culated under the direction of the Secretary. Moved by Rev. Lewis P. W. Balch, D.D., Secretary of the House of Bishops, U. S. ; seconded by S. 0. Bagg, Esq. : 2. Resolved,— That this meeting desires to return thanks to Almightj- God, that amidst the various trials which have been experienced, and notwithstanding the gainsayings and speculations that have been multi- plying respecting the authority of the Scriptures, the Church, as " tho witness and keeper of Holy Writ," has continued to be faithful ; and earnestly prays that He will, by His Holy Spirit, enable us, and our brethren throughout the world, to hold steadfast to the same, that we may hand down, in all its fulness, to succeeding generations, the sacred deposit committed to our trust, and prepare the nations for the coming, of Christ. Moved by C.J. Brydges, Esq. ; seconded by Ven. H, Patton, D.C.L., Archdeacon of Ontario ; 3. Resolved, — That the meeting learns with satisfaction the completion of the arrangements which had been entered into with the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel, whereby a grant of £1000 sterling has been obtained in aid of partial endowments of certain parishes in the rural districts; and wishes to impress on all the members of the Church in this Diocese the duty of their making faithful efforts both for the further accomplishment of the endowment of the Church, as well as for the increase of the annual subscriptions to the funds of this Society, to meet the payments of the stipends of Missionaries now employed in the Diocese. Moved by Major Campbell, C.B. ; seconded by Rev. F. G. C. Brathwaite, B.A., Onslow: 4. Resolved, — That the thanks of the meeting be given to all thof e who have taken an active interest in the working of the Society, during the past year, especially to the members of the Mission Board, and to the officers of the Society. Moved by Lieut.-General Sir F. Williams, K.C.B. ; seconded Rev. Canon Leach, D.C.L. : 5. Resolved, — That the thanks of this meeting be presented to the Most Reverend the Lord Bishop of the Diocese, Metropolitan, for his kindness in presiding on the present occasion. On the previous evening, Tuesday, 17th inst., at 7 o'clock, there was Service in the Cathedral. The special Annual Sermon before the Society was preached by the Venerable H. Patton, D.C.L., Archdeacon of Ontario. REPORT. On this the Fourteenth Anniversary of the Incorporated Church Society of the Diocese of Montreal, the Committee of the Central Board are gratified at being able to state that a steady and progressive work is going on in the Diocese through the agency of the Society, and would beg to return thanks to Almighty God for that measure of success which has attended its operations to the present period. The Committee are thankful also for this opportunity of ex- pressing gratitude to our Heavenly Father for continuing to our * country the inestimable blessings of peace, at a time when an un- happy civil war has so deeply affected the prosperity of a neigh- bouring country, and the efficiency of a sister Church within its borders. The Committte have endeavoured, in season and out of season, to keep before the minds of Churchmen the great responsibility devolving upon them in furthering the objects of this Society, now entirely^Mhsionary in its designs ; and while gratefully ac- knowledging the success which has hitherto at nded their labours, the stern fact must not now be hidden that a period has arrived in the financial affairs of the Incorporation, requiring extreme efforts and exertions to meet the pressing wants of the future. It usually happens with Societies of this kind, that the first fourteen years is the turning point of their prosperity or otherwise, and the members of the Committee have watched with anxiety the signs of the cycle in this, as denoting to which point their efforts have tended. Thanks to the Great Head of the Church, they are not without data to ground hope upon that the turning-point is reached, and that it i:ends to encouragement. The members of our communion have only to look to the prompt and cheerful manner with which the proposal of the Ven- erable the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts was responded to, when the sum of £1000 stg. was offered 14 to the Diocese, to assist in laying the foundation of an Endowment fund, on condition that five times the amount be contributed from other sources ; and vrithin the time allowed, the required sum of £5000 was raised in thirteen missions ; — this circumstance alone shewed vitality, and ground for encouragement among us. But while the Committee would point to this as forming a portion of the data alluded to ; as also the strict faith kept with all the Mis- sionaries deriving support, in part, from the Church Society ; and likewise from the well-administered fund for the maintenance of the Widows and Orphans of deceased Clergymen ; they would be doing an injustice to themselves and to those who may succeed them, if they were to withhold the fact that still greater need is now rendered necessary for renewed eflfbrts to maintain the. status of the work so well begun. This arises from the change effected in the By-laws of the Constitution, making the Society more strictly* a Missionary agency, than when first constituted. Henceforth the Society will assume the character of a Domestic Missionary Society, the one great object which it contemplates being that of sending forth and sustaining Missionaries in the destitute parts of the Diocese ; and with the view of carrying out this object a Board of Missions has been formed, whose business it will be to superin- tend this work of the Society, &c. It will bo seen from this change in the Constitution of the Society, that its managers are in earnest that the Church should bend her energies more than ever to the Missionary work, and that her scattered children may ye t hope for her ministrations. The Board, therefore, fervently trust that the Society will, in this character, commend itself to the esteem and affection of every member of the Church. Although the Society has grown and increased, although it has gradually extended its arms to the various extremities of the Diocese, yet it still needs for its welfare the earnest support and most cordial co-operation of its men bers. It requires now, perhaps, more than at any period of its exisvcnce, the prudence and wisdom of its directors. For to it many of our Missionaries have now, almost exclusively, to look for support ; and it is to be hoped that the interest and sympathy which is always felt in the labours of the Missionary, will cause all Churchmen to increase their exer- tions and contributions in its behalf. 16 The Committee would now desire to lay before the Society the general features of their proceedings during the past year, INCOME. The following is a summary of the Society's receipts for the year end- ing Dec. 3l8t, 1864. — {Vide Treasurer's statement.) ANNUAL SUBSCRIPTIONS. CATHEDRAL. Annual Subscriptions, 22 50 Boxes, 15 89 38 39 $2750 89 The above statement exhibits an increase in Montreal Annual Sub- scriptions of $106 47. The Montreal Parochial Association has paid to the Treasurer the sum of $1327 56, which includes $221 contributed through the Mission- ary Boxes. It may be as well to mention, that the object of the boxes is for receiving the private thank-offerings of the members of families for the Mission Fund of the Society. The Clergy of the City Churches are recommended to talce charge of the boxes belonging to their re- spective congregations, and to use endeavours to secure a more general distribution of the same. The Committee confidently hope that by this means a larger amount of contributions will be obtained than heretofore. 16 li'.ii I! ! Annual subscriptions in Country Parishes and Missions. .$1599 86 This statement shews an increase of $200 44 in the amount of annual subscriptions from the Country Missioud, which is considered satisfac- tory, as large contributions have been raised for local purposes in many of the Missions. SSRMONS. Collection after Sermons for Mission Fund in the City Churches. $417 76 Being an increase of $80 33. Collection after Sermons in Country Parishes 288 47 Beings decrease of $145 06. This diminution is a matter of regret, as the steady working of the Society in maintaining her Missionary operation^?, or entering upon new fields of usefulness, depends largely upon this source of income. The income of the Society has been, from ordinary sources, $1486 72 more than last year. The sum of $4942 29 has been contributed towards Endowments. The total amount raised within the Diocese during the year for Church purposes i3[$80,763 6 7 j, which does not include $63,779 43 contributed by Subscriptions and Donations towards the erection and necessary appur- tenances of the Churches of St. James the Apostle and the New Trinity. BOOK AND TBAOT OOlilllTTBK. • The Book and Tract Committee, feeling the importance of circulating, as widely as possible, the Bibles, Prayer Books, and other useful and Educational Works, published by the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, have, with the consent of the Central Board, disposed of their stock of Books to Messrs. Dawson Bros., and to whose central premises the Depository has been removed. Messrs. Dawson Bros, have also agreed to furnish the Office-room, required by the Church Society, for the yearly rent of £20 ; to order the importation of such books, as the Book and Tract Committee may direct, from the catalogues of the S.P.O.K., which shall be sold at the prices they have been hitherto; to furnish to the Church Society, at cost price, such Prayer Books and Bibles as may, from time to time, be granted to the poorer districts ; and the stock on hand of the S.P.G.K. publications shall never be less at. any tim(>, than $1000 value, net cost. The Committee confidently hope that by these arrangements the books of the S.P.G.K. will be more extensively circulated throughout the Diocese than heretofore, and be found productive of much usefulnesj. 19 Tracta are kept at the Society's Office for gratuitous distribution. The sum of $480, being amounts received from Messrs. Dawson and Mrs. Walton on account of Gommittee, has been deposited in the Bank of British North America. N. B. — The Clergy, wanting for their own private libraries, standard Theological Works, or Parochial or Sunday School Lending Libraries will find some facilities rendered them on visiting the^Depository. MISSION BOARD. This important Board was substituted for the old ^ ay Gommittee, and upon its eflfectual operation, the success of the Ghurch Society will mainly depend. Its object is " to make better provision for advancing Missionary work in this Diocese." After maturely considering the various modes suggested for carrying out the above object, the following plan was adopted, as most likely to enlist the sympathies and active co-operation of every section of the Diocese, both in the city and country parts. 1. That the Rural Dean of each Deanery, with the laymen appointed as a deputation fur the Deanery, and a deputation appointed by the Lord Bishop, shall visit each parish in the Deanery, once in every year, for the purpose of holding meetings and making collections on behalf of the Mission fund of the Diocese; and that a general Annual Meeting of the Deanery shall be held at some place appointed by the Deanery, at which shall be present a deputation from the Board of Missions. 2. That the visit to the parishes be made during the month of January or February in each year ; and the Annual Meeting be held at such time and place in the Deanery as the Rural Dean shall appoint. 3. That the Rector or Incumbent of each Church in the City of Mont- real, with his Church-wardens, shall be requested to hold an Annual Meeting in his Ghurch, for the above purposes,— -the General Annual Meeting of the City of Montreal being already provided for, in accord- ance with the laws of the Constitution. 4. That in each Congregation there shall be appointed a Sob-Oom- mittee, consisting of ladies and gentlemen, whose duty it shall be to make collections in aid of the Mission fund, in such manner and under snch regulations as they may be pleased to adopt ; and that it is desi- rable that the said Sub-Committee should meet and report quarterly. 6. Experience having proved that a very limited contribution of five cents per week has been very successful elsewhere, some such plan it respectfully recommended to the Church in this Diocese. 20 It is bbliered that it' the Glcrgy and Laity will liaartilyjoin in carrjing out, to the letter, the modut operandi proposed in the above resolutions, thAt a great success tannt be the happy result. The period is now arrived to make that trial, and the days and places of meeting should at once be fixed for thu Public Meetings in the Rural Deaneries ; and rolunteera of influential Laymen should lend their per- sonal aid by attending, especially the Rural Meetings, thereby infusing new life into the work, and, with the resident laymen, securing an interest in an undertaking in which the prosperity of this Society in a great measure rests. Codo reports : — The Mission of Aylmer having been separated from that of Hull only six months ngo, the financial statement I send refers only to the last half year : as such, I think it may be considered very satisfactory, giving promise of increased effort on the part of the people attached to this section of the former Mission of Hull and Aylmer, to bear the expenses necessarily attendant upon the ministrations of the Ohurch. Having been in charge of this Mission so short a time, it would be out of place for me to speak of progress ; but I beg leave to remark, that while the late division of the Mission of Hull and Aylmer cannot fail to be eventually a means of strengthening the Church in this locality, yet there is evidently great need of a still further division of the present Mission of Aylmer. The number of Protestants in the west half of the Township of Hull and in the Township of Eardley, who have been baptized by our Minis- ters or who desire their services, is still far beyond the number which fall under the care of any one clergyman in the eastern section of the Diocese, and as long as this state of affairs continues in the Ottawa townships, we must expect to lose not only members but also the sup- port to the Church that they might otherwise be induced to give. RiV. A. C. Nesbitt writes:— The following townships, viz.: Aylwin, Alleyn, Ilincks, Northfield, Wright, Bouchette, Cnron, MinlwBuku, com- pose what is called the Upper Gatiaeau Mission. The lant named is between ninety and one hundred miles north of Ottawa City, on the rkers Desert and Gatinean, at the confluence of which is one of tlie North-West Company's trading ports, in close proximity to which occasional services are held. These townships, with one or two exceptions, have been inha- blt*i1 for a space of five, ten, fifteen, twenty years ; but though this por- tion of Canada has been so long settled, the population is by no means in ratio. Yet thene are in each township a few who carry on farming so as to be able to live comfortably thereby. The population is mixed, vl7. , Protestants and Romanists. We find, amongst those professing that general appellation of Protestant, a very small minority adhering to " the faith once delivered to the Saints." It behoves the Church now, if ever, to put forth what efforts she possibly can in behalf of these Missions on the Gatineau, to sustain Missionaries here In planting the good seed which. If sown carefully andprayerfully, and watched and nurtured as It begins to grow, we fear not "Auxilio Dei," but the harvest will be plenteous, and stand no chance of being other than wheal. The state of the Church in this, as yet infant Mission, is this ; that of 108 Protestant families that I have visited (being the total number in these townships), onlj twenty-eight call themselves Church people. These are for the most part worthy people, and seem to be well disposed to do what they can to have the Church established amongst them, yet they are compara- tively poor, and consequently unable to give but little compared with what is required for this purpose. Another year we hope (D.V.) to do something for the Church Society. ♦BERTHIER. Rev. W. C. Mkbhick writes: — "It is the Lord: let him do what seemeth him good." It is in the spirit of this passage of Holy Scripture,, that I announce to the Society the broken state of my health ; after fif- ?1 (I 22 teen jekri of active dutj, often involring much tr&rel and ekposure, u pleased God in the earlier part of the year to visit your Missionary with severe illness, which obliged him to refrain from work for some months. I thank my Heavenly Master most fervently, that, after the rest thus obtained, I have been able to resume, to some extent, my previous engagements, and for the future, I leave myself in His hands, assured He will order my course in all things for the best. Mr. John Rollit, who has been allowed to act as Catechist by his Lordship the Bishop, has performed a very useful part in keeping up the services of the sanctuary, by reading the liturgy, and a sermon, during the illness or absence of the Missionary ; and the Rev. Mr. Andbrson, of Sorel, kindly came over and ofBciated on two occasions. It was cur great privilege, in the month of August, to receive a visit from our respected Bishop. It was a season of much profit, — at the confirmation service, which was very solemn and edifying, upwards of two hundred and fifty persons were present, of whom one hundred and fifty were not of us ; fourteen young personb assumed the responsibilities of the Christian profession ; on the next day, the new cemetery was con- secrated, thus supplying a want which has been long felt in the Mission; —a suitable place of interment for departed members. An importaul step has been taken in our endo«vment movement : $1,000 has been invested on first class landed security ; this sum was made up by $600 contributions from the subscribers, and a grant of $400 fr&m that ever generous benefactor to the Church in the colonies, the venerable Society for the Prcpagation of the Gospel; $35 11 has been also ..paid in to the treasurer, and there are still notes of the con- gregation bearing interest, amounting to $358 32, making the endowment fund, independently of the Glebe, to be, so far, $1393 43. The school bu'lding fund amounts to $429 65 ; it is earnestly hoped that this fund will be soon ir creased, and that the important object contemplated by it will be entered upon, " if the Lord will," at an early period. I feel it a duty to acknowledge very gratefully the kindness and sympathy manifested so generally during my season of trial ; and I cannot forbear offering my cordial and respectful thanks to those ladies of the congregation, who, impelled by the love of Christ, have ren- dered me so much assistance by devoting their strength and time to the religious advancement of the " Lambs of His flock." Among the contributions of the year, it will be seen, that Mrs. E. A. Clark, and Miss Cuthbert, with tlieir usual Christian liberality, have paid in instalmeuts of their subscriptions to the endowment fund ; and in this connection, 1 have pleasure in recording the gift of a pair of oak chancel chairs by Mr. Benson, a former teacher of the school here. Fyles : — God has blessed our work in this Mission. The more seriously disposed of the inhabitants have received the ministra- tions of the Church gladly. We number sixteen communicants in Brome Woods, and two at West Brome. The Church of the Holy Trinity was opened on Christmas Eve. It was not built without difficulty ; but our I^eople laboured very earnestly for its completion. Our Sunday-school is doing well — I have been enabled to gather a library of eighty carefully selected volumes for circulation amongst the scholars. The " Brome Woods Sewing Society" is working for funds to purchase a Church bell. In consequence of the addition of Fulford to my Mission, I have been obliged, very unwillingly, to give up much of my work at West Brome. The Church at Fulford is closed — there is no stove in it — a few families , have attended service in a private house. •CLARENDON. ^^'''^ ^ ' ^ j£.,^H Rbv. G. Hkaton reports : — This Church, which was opened for Divine Service, according to the orders of the Church of England and Ireland, every Sunday afternoon, on the 22nd of last May, seems to have fully answered all the purposes of its erection. During the summer, the con- gregations were large. Since the winter set in the number has never fallen much below thirty. As the pecuniary difficulties attendant on the undertaking have not been wholly surmounted, it has been thought sound discretion not to ask for contributions to the Church Society this year. M! > I ! Much depends upon faithful, zealous and diligent collectors : if these are wanting, many will be passed by un- asked, and the amount will proportionably suffer. Great complaints are made as to the scarcity of money, and perhaps it may be true to some extent ; though with many it is always scarce when required for reli- gious purposes. I have to report some instances of kindness and libe- rality, and on the other hand of cold-heortedness and indifference. I fear the latter rather predominates. Many local Church objects hare been attempted and accomplished ; for which success we should feel grateful to that God who never fails to help those who serve him. Among these has lately been the procuring of a harmonium for Edwardstown Church. In this, as with other objects, we look in vain along the list of subscri- bers for the names of able men — able indeed to give plentifully, but un- happily, unwilling to help. It has however been accomplished, thank God, and without proving burdensome to any, except to one. The Missionary's work is greatly assisted by those who offer their time and abilities towards sacred objects ; acting as voluntary collec- tors ; helping in Divine service with musical talents ; working in the Sunday-school with all its discouragements of parents' indifference, as teachers, and striving to collect the neglected lambs of the flock that they may be fed with the word of life. In this connection it is but just that I sbould thankfully acknowledge the regular and devoted services of Miss Wheatley. *ELY. Rev. a. Fortin reports : — This new Mission, which at present is held in conjunction with Waterloo, has hardly become strong enough to do anything beyond meeting its own claims. No collection was made this year for the Church Society, the Mission being not yet fully organized ; but next year, we hope to be able to do something for the Church Society. The amount subscribed is $140 : of this amount $100 are subscribed by the non-resident proprietors, Mr. W. F. Coflfin, and the Heirs Boston. Their wish is that the settlers may have the means of grace. We are- about to take steps towards building a parsonage. Mr. Coffin has offered a lot of ten acres for a site. The flock is small, but as I am. also partly paid by the Sabrevois Mission Society, I find plenty to do ia. endeavouring to place the truth before my fellow-countrymen. Nktk writes : — For years past, this section of country baa been retrograding in both material and social prosperity, from a com:bi- nation of causes ; among which may be enumerated the removal of the military, and of many artisans, on the completion of the public works ; the diversion of the public travel from this route to the St. Lawrence ; the unfavorable nature of the soil for agricultural pursuits ; but, above all, the persistent opposition of the inhabitants to the levying of municipal school taxes. From the last cause, the roads are always out of repair, and in a population of Wo thousand, there are not much more than forty or fifty children who attend any school, for either secular or religious instructidh. These are diflSculties which I experience beyond any of my brethren in the Diocese. During the past summer, travelling in my Mission was more than usually difficult. The spring freshets carried away the bridge on " the Rouge," a wide and rapid river, as well as another on a smaller stream (the Salmon River), and for some months I was obliged to sWim my horse across the former, when my duties took me to the Augmenta- tion, and to gc by steamer to La Petite Nation, putting my people to the trouble of taking me from one station to another. I have heretofore explained that, with the exception of a few old resi- dents, our people are poor ; and also expressed my fears that their contributions had reached their maximum. The services during this period were but few, and this accounts for a .«iaHill deficiency in the offertory collections, as compared with last year. I am 27 liappy, however, to report that the present condition of the Mission is as prosperous at least, as at any former period of its existence. We bad two successful Missionary meetings in aid of the Diocesan Mission Fund, and I must here express my thankfulness to the Rev. J. Rev. W. M. Sbabobxe reports : — During the three years I have now been in Kildare we have seen, for so small a community, much of the vicissitudes of human life. In the years 1862-3 we had an unusual amount of mortality, by which a number of our oldest settlers were taken away, some of them very suddenly, and it certainly was most providential that a minister had been appointed that could be at hand at so trying a time. And during this year that is now ending, a number of our young people have entered into the holy estate of matrimony, thus filling, and we hope with credit and Christian devotedness, the places vacated the year before. My usual course of duty is a service every Sunday morning at Kildare, before which I always teach Sunday-school, if not unavoidably pre- vented. In the afternoon, I have a fortnightly service at de Ramsay, before which I also teach Sunday-school, except during the time Mr. Rot remained there. Here, we have a very good congregation for so limited aProtestant population. I have also a fortnightly service at Lake Cluky till other arrangements can be made for the town of Joliette (Industry). The congregation, however, is very small. In addition to these, during the summer I took charge of St. Gabriel de Brandon, assisted. M m ■IS 28 by Mr. Jambs H. Dixon, who proved himself a very valuable aid ; but of this lam now relieved, as the Rev. Benj. P. Lewis has been appointed to that Mission. The congregation at Kildare is good, and at the late confirmation tour of His Lordship the Bishop, thirty-three were confirmed, against thirteen, three years previous. But in a pecuniary point of view, the three years have been very trying. During the year 1862, I received from the Church Society, £80, but most of the money from the people came in only in 1863, and was then due for my horse ; a d the farm, owing to its exhausted state and late sowing, was a loss to n. of fifty dollars. I am now, however, most happy to say that there is a prospect of things taking a change for the better, as seventy-eight acres of the land is sold ; but the failure of the crop, &c., for the three years past, has left me in considerable difficulty and debt. •MILLE ISLES AND MORIN. Rev. Joseph Mkbbick.— Owing to the continued mercy and care of our Heavenly Father, I am permitted, as yo-^r Missionary here, to report to the Society of the work carried on during the past year. Service has been held in each Church on the Lord's Day, morning and evening alternately ; with Sunday-schools ; and during the week Bible- classes, and a Singing-class, together with Cottage Lectures, upon which both old and young attend, who otherwise are prevented from being able to avail themselves of the privilege of attending upon any of the ministrations of the Church. I am thankful to be able to say (though I am not without discourage* '..i^ its and diflSculties) that there are evidences of more spiritual life and a greater interest being manifested among the people in the work of the Church, in this part of the Lord's vineyard. , * In taking a review of the varied labours and difficulties through which I have had to pass, I can say, hitherto the Lord hath helped me. May the Great Head of the Church be with us and bl<;ss our labours, and open up the way for the preaching of His blessed Gospel, that the " wilder- ness " may " rejoice and blossom as the rose." Four Day Schools are in operation in the Mission wMch I have visited, and a good work is being done. During the year there have been 28 baptisms, 1 marriage, 4 burials, 10 candidates confirmed, and 22 communicants. In this Mission, no subscriptions have been solicited in aid of the Church Society this year, in consequence of local expenses, and work performed in the erection of the Parsonage-house. A small Glebe, of twelve arpents, has been purchased at an expense of about $90. One instalment of $20 has been paid from funds collected by me, and another by the congregation is now about' being made. 20 The Parsonage-house, and out-offices, stable, 4c., are advancing to- ■wards completion. This is one of the poorest Missions in the Diocese : many families are destitute, and none well-oif. The faithful and self-denying labours for years, of the Rev. Mr. Griffin (a part of whose extensive Mission this was), must not be forgotten here. He not only labours for souls, but also administers medicine, to the great relief of many of our people. We beg to return thanks to our respected Chief Pastor, the Bishop, for service books for both Churches, and Bibles and Prayer Books for distribution : and desire, also, to return thanks to kind friends in this Diocese, and that of Quebec, who kindly contributed to the Parsonage and Glebe Fund. Many acts of kindness, the Missionary records from several friends, and especially from Mr. and Mrs. I. J. Gibb, and Mrs. Adams, and Mrs. H. L. RooTH, of Montreal. Of the out-stations, the back settlements uf Onslow and Bristol services were the most fully attended <702), the services at Riopel's, Bristol, the most scantily attended (265). GoDDKN writes : Very seldom is the universally experienced truth, that the Church is being planted in an enemy's territory, brought more forcibly to the mind of the Missionary than when he attempts a report of his year's work, and the state of his Mission. The retrospect is never one of uninterrupted succesr ; and this, as might well be expected, is true of this Mission ; for while we have a good deal to encourage — taking the Mission as a whole — there is also much to discourage us. The prevalence of error and of sin, and the painful lack of spirituality and of deadness to the world, is, no doubt, a source of regret to every Missionary, — nor am I an exception ; yet God is fulfilling His promise in some degree that " His word shall not return unto Him roid." Through the assistance of Mr. Fessenden — sent out by your Society — I have been able to opec ^wo new, and, I trust, hopeful stations in Potton ; although there are none of the people who sufficiently know the Church to join la 37 her services. In Bolton tliere is an active interest manifested, and things are looking very encouraging ; and I hope, by next September, to have a new€hurch erected in the east part of that township, the people having subscribed about $400 for that purpose. Divine service has been regu- larly performed during the year. Twenty-five persons — eight adults and seventeen children — have been baptized, which is an increase over any former year. A class for candidates for ConPrmation is also formed. Through the exertions of the ladies of Mansonville, to whose aid I have been often indebted, St. Paul's Church has been thoroughly painted. I am very thankful to be able to report an increase in the subscriptions to the Missionary Society, although none have, as yet, been taken up in Potton for the clergyman's support ; for this increase we are indebted to Mr. Parker, Miss Ingram, and Miss Blanchard, of Potton ; and to Miss Green and Miss Houldsworth of Bolton, who were our collectors. I can- not close without acknowledging the great interest which Mrs. L. A. Perkins and Mr. D. Manson have taken in leading the praises of God in the congregation — the latter having played the melodeon ; and in con- nection with this subject, I would remark, that the melodeon in each Church is now played by a little girl, — at Bolton by a daughter of Mr. Rexford, of only twelve years ; and at Mansonville by Mrs. Darling's daughter, only eleven years of age. He feels encou- raged by the lively interest manifested in promoting the diflPerent objects for the benefit of the Mission. The subject of a partial Endowment Fund is now under consideration, but as the necessary arrangements are not completed, it cannot be reported at this time. A new fence has been placed before the Parsonage, and lumber procured for fencing 'Glebe ; funds are also being raised for repairs of Church property. At 'i '11 t- :i ili! i 38 Abercorn the Church Building Committee are prosecuting their labours with zeal and vigour. The local subscriptions are liberal, amounting to nearly $1000. This, with a little aid from the friends of the Church who are willing to help those who help themselves, will enable the committee to complete their Church at an early period. A neat design has been furnished by Messrs. Lawford & Nelson, architects, Montreal. The services of the sanctuary are well attended — communicants on Christmas day 23. The Sunday-schools also are doing important service, numbering over 100 scholars. Fifty volumes have been added to the library. The Financial Committee have been unwearied in their exertions to raise the sum guaranteed to their Missionary, a source of grateful satisfaction to him. UPTON AND ST. HYACINTH.~.Vo Report. BEDFORD. Rkv. G. Slack.— The Missionary at Bedford, in forwarding his annual Report and list of subscriptions to the Diocesan Church Society, would desire to excuse the apparent smallness of their amount by the fact that a great deal has been required to put the interior of the Ciiurch and the Parsonage, with its surroundings, into a proper state of repair. The Ladies' Association has been unwearied in its devotion to the accom- plishment of this object. By their exertions during the past summer, the interior of the Church has been handsomely grained in black oak ; a new pulpit and reading desk, with a table for the Holy Communion, and handsome altar rails placed in the chancel, for which they have al>;o provided a carpet of ecclesiastical pattern, with hangings of crim- son cloth for the pulpit and reading desk ; besides laying down cocoa- 39 nut matting in the aisles and vestibule of the Church. The congregation of St. James' Church have here to thank the Hon< Justice McCord for a present of an altar cover of crimson cloth, with gold-colored fringe, having the sacred monogram in front. The Church has been also fur- nished with twelve kerosene lamps, with appropriate fittings. There may be mentioned, in addition, a pair of substantial and well-executed chairs for the chancel, costing $10 each, one of which was presented by Gborob Cloyes, jun., the other by a friend. Thus the members and friends of the Church have been exerting themselves in various ways to put their Church into a condition becoming a house consecrated to the worship of God. An Offertory collection amounting to $34 77 (of which $15 have been appropriated to the purchase of vessels for the Holy Communion); $3 55 collected after sermon, for general purposes, and $5 10 for Widows' and Orphans' Fund, together with $27 75 of annual subscriptions to the Church Society, constitutes the amount raised during the past year in this Mission =: $91 17. A handsome stained glass window, the gift of a widow lady in England, a relative of the Incumbent — one of Mr. Spence's tasteful productions — has been placed in the chancel. BROME. Rbv. R. Lindsay. — During the year past the work of the Mission has gone on quietly, and I trust prosperously. Our subscription to the Brome Woods Mission has been successfully raised by a special effort. During the summer we had seven Sunday-schools in operation. Services in the two Churches of the Mission every Sunday, and at four out-stations once a fortnight. Tlie additional Sunday-schools and services were carried on by Mr. Fessexden, who was partly paid from the endowment fund of the Mission. One Sunday-school at a distance was conducted by a lay member of the Church at Knowlton. We have had a larger number of adult baptisms than usual. Did all the members of our con- gregations give thought and care to the inierests of the Church com< mitted to them, — if they not only prayed " Thy kingdom come," but also strove for its extension, we should have a much greater work to report. Yet it will not be amiss to state that this Mission has sustained a serious loss in the death of its hard-working pastor ; and ns the present Missionary is obliged to teach a Day-school to form a competent salary, some of the important duties the late Missionary performed, have in consequence been suspended. All I have to report is, that $190 were raised during the year for the vlergyman's salary. CHAMBLY.—iV'o Report. CHRISTIEVILLE. Rbv. J. A. MACLEOD writes :— It is with gratitude to Almighty God that we witness a still-increasing interest in the affairs of our Church in this Parish. In our last year's Report, we mentioned that the sum of $80 bad been obtained as the result of a " Christmas Tree," towards the purchase of matting for the aisles of the Church. This effort created a general de- sire on the part of the congregation to have the interior of the Ghurcli entirely renewed ; and it was finally resolved, at the Easter and subse- quent special vestry meetings, to i,airy it into effect. Messrs. Rtder, Casson, and Pbarson were appointed a building committee, to superintend the proposed repairs and improvements. The Church was closed during the progress of the work, and the Sun- day services were continued as usual in our commodious school-room. The more important improvements may be mentioned. The interior of the walls of the Church, heretofore plastered on the stone, have been entirely lathed and plastered, and painted stone gray. The woodwork has been all painted anew ; cocoa matting has been laid down in the aisles and pews ; new coverings and trimmings have been provided for the pulpit, reading desk, and communion table ; two very suitable oak chairs have been placed in the chancel ; a substantial porch has been erected before the door, and the spire shingled and painted. These, with some less important changes, render our Church, at present, very com- plete, both in appearance and comfort. The entire expenoiture amounts to $558. The Christmas Tree above alluded to, and a special subscrip- tion, yielded $238, and a debt has been incurred amounting to $320. We are thankful to state that the proceeds of our 1864 Christmas Tree enables us to reduce this to $220. Great credit is due to the ladies of the congregation, whose exertions and liberality rendered the Christmas Tree successful. We feel also thankful to Miss Cousins for lier willing and constant services at the melodeon. . T. a. Young, — The contributions for local purposes in this Mis- sion are much larger this year than usual. This is owing to a Bazaar which was held in the village in the month of July. It was projected by the ladies of the congregation, who all united in a most exemplary and praiseworthy manner in the entire management and responsibility of the undertaking. The principal object being the raising of funds to make some necessary repairs to the Church, and to procure a carpet, trimmings, and other decorations for the chancel, it proved a great success — the handsome sum of $275, being realized, which has enabled us to make a great many improvements to the Church. A very gratifying circumstance connected with the Bazaar was the voluntary support given it by a large number of Roman Catholics, who purchased a great many of the articles. The ladies also have formed this winter a sewing society, which they intend to continue every year, and in the event of its prospering they look forward to its enabling us to meet all contingencies. The following sums were raised in this Mission, for Church purposes during the year : Subscriptions to Church Society. .*. 820 75 Missionary purposes 4 00 Widows' and Orphans' Fund 3 75 Towards Clergyman's stipend 50 00 Pew Rents 42 50 Poor Fund 9 27 Offertory 20 03 Proceeds of Bazaar 275 00 Total $425 30 42 DUNHAM. Vbn. J. Scott, D.D. — The amount of contribution to support the min- istrations of the Church during the pnst year, actually paid in, is very considerably above what we have hitherto done. The stipend of an Assistant Minister in the Parish has, to a great extent, been raised here j and sums have been pledged towards an endowment fund, "mounting to about twenty-seven hundred dollars, inclusive of a bequest of five hun- dred dollars, from Edward Rykerd, a native and resident of this Parish, prematurely removed from us by death, who by that act of piety expressed his sense of gratitude for having had made known to him the way of salvation through Jesus Christ, in the ministrations of the Church, which he desired to contribute towards maintaining and perpetuating for the blessing and salvation of all the coming generations of men in his native parish. Would that there were more frequently aflforded such evidence, by the professed disciples of Christ, of their love of the ever- lasting Gospel, which is able to make us wise unto salvation. The contributions of the Parish are as follows : Towards Assistant Miiiipter's salary Sf500 00 • Incidental expenses 40 00 Missionary Collections 10 75 Widows and Orplians 6 62 Insurance of Church property 15 68 Synod expenses 3 00 Offertory 21 00 Annual Subscription 72 00 Total $669 05 FRELIGHSBURGH. Rev. J. B. The Curate, through severe family affliction, was forced to be absent for sev- eral months, during which time the aged Rector was enabled to keep up, without mutilation, the full morning service. For the remainder of the year there have been uninterrupted services, morning and evening on Sundays, as also morning service on every Friday in Lent, and on other chief Festivals. . Rev. Joseph Griffin. — In rendering a Report of the Mission under my charge, I feel thankful in being able to state, that, under the Divine blessing, the Missionary operations during, the past year have been attended with a degree of success. In each of our Churches and stations, the attendance has been good ; the progress of the people in the truth of the Gospel is pleasing, and I may say that, in some a growth of grace is apparent ; from which we cannot but be greatly encouraged to proceed, placing our whole trust and reli- ance on the Great Head of the Church, knowing that He who has begun this work will surely accomplish it unto the end, and that our labour shall not be in vain. It is a source of great happiness to me, that the West Gore Church is now completed, consecrated, and out of debt. Divine service is cele- brated there and at Wentworth, every alternate Sunday. Looking at the circumstances of this poor congregation, the erection of so commodious a Church may bo justly said to be a great undertake ing. But with much to be thankful for, we have many things to afflict and try us. Owing to the great drought during last summer, there has been a complete failure of the grain crops ; so that the people have not been able to subscribe as liberally as they could wish to the Diocesan Church Society. However, I do hope that a benign Providence Avill enable them to manifest their gratitude to God and His Church by a long and liberal Subscription list, every future year, to the many excellent objects of the Church Society. During the past year there have been twenty-eight baptisms. Our communicants number 110. Ret. J. Johnston. — In presenting the Report of this Mission for the present year, I have not so favourable a statement to make respecting the H ;!l W i^i iii I 44 amounts collected as miglit be wished. But when we consider the cir- cumstances of the Mission this will not appear strange. The old Mission of Hull and Aylmer was divided last July into two ; the Rev. F. Codd having been appointed to the Aylmer Mission. By this arrangement the Tillage of Aylmer, with a portion of the Township of Hull, and the whole of the Township of Eardley, have been separated from the old Mission. The present Mission of Hull includes the small village of Hull, with a portion of the township in the rear, and a part of Templeton. In the village of Hull the Protestant population is as yet very small, and with the exception of three or four families, those who attend the Church there are of the working classes, and generally very poor. It is, not- withstanding, an important station for the Church to retain, as from its locality it must before many years become a populous place. Chelsea, where I hold divine service generally every Sunday morning, is distant from Hull Church in a straight line, about eight or nine miles ; but by the road, which I am obliged to take every Sunday in going to and returning from Hull Church, and then to Chelsea, I have to travel about twenty miles. The distance will be much shortened, when the clergyman can procure a house in Hull village. The population in and around Chelsea has always been and still is composed almost exclusively of dissenters from the Church; but there has been such a large attendance of worshippers every Sunday evening when I have attended there, that I am not without hopes of yet seeing the Church take root among them. I have not as yet been able to call upon the people in Chelsea or Templeton for contribu- tions. During the winter, however, I shall not fail to lay before them the claims of the Church. In Hull, we have raised during the present year : For repairs of Hull Church $60 00 Widows' and Orphans' Fund 4 00 Missionary purposes 6 00 Clergyman's stipend 100 00 Insuring Church at Hull 6 33 »176 33 I hope also during the coming year to be able to do something towards the erection of a house for the Minister in Hull, the want of which is so much felt — there being no building in the place to which he could remove. The number of communicants in Hull Church is twenty-two, and this, out of the small congregation worshipping there, is a larger pro- portion than is usual in most congregations. Upon the whole I feel encouraged to hope that through the blessing of God the Church in this Mission will widen and deepen her influ- ence during the coming year. HUNTINGDON. Rev. p. Bcrt reports : — On the recurrence of the annual call of the 45 Society I again chronicle a few of the most prominent items of Cliur(h affairs in connection with this large Mission. With pleasure I record that the year has passed in peace and quietness, and yet with as much success and progress as heretofore. Our congregations keep up ; and with the aid of Mrs. Bradford, a superintendent and teacher among u3 of some years' standing, my Sundtvy-scliool also progresses. My Wardens have cheerfully rendered every aid, and manifest a busi- ness-like zeal in the temporalities of the Church. The list of communi- cants shows an increase, and numbers 102 ; Infants baptized have been 27 ; and Funerals 10 ; whilst at regular times Divine service has been celebrated on 108 occasions, in four different stations. Some of the people, at Christmas, made my daughter i present for leading the praise of God on Sundays at the harmonium. A lady, member of St. George's, Montreal, presented Hinchinbrooke Church with a chalice for the use of the Table of the Lord. The proceeds of another successful soiree have freed us from debt, so that we now hold the deeds of the Glebe lot r ..a of the addition to the burying-ground. $30 also have been expended in new-fencing, and by "socials" we have obtained and laid out on the Parsonage some dollars. At St. Paul's Church window-blinds have been furnished ; the out-side wood- work painted, and carpenters-work within completed, to the outlay of $20. As a new thing I must also report that on the receipt of the circular from the Committee on Missions (Church Society), we held a public meeting, and organized a system by which collections may regularly be taken up for the Society, and so far we have made a fair beginning and shall transmit at once the sums gathered. Land for tlie site was also given by the same generous donors, the value of which is estimated at $6,000. The Heirs of the late Hon. Mr. Mackay have likewise given a valuable piece of land, sufficient to ensure an open space around tiio Church. It also affords me especial gratification to acknowledge the following gifts, viz: A Bible, and set of Service books, presented by the Right Rev. the Lord Bishop, — a valuable, and richly chased, silver Communion service, an offering from an earnest and devoted son of the Church :— three memorial windows given respectively by Mr. W. Irwin reports : — In addition to the financial view of this' Church contained in the tabular statement, it should be mentioned, that during the year the Communion collections (for the poor) have amounted to $34.04. With this sum the Incumbent has had to meet an unusual amount of distress in his district during the present winter. He has been aided, however, by two or three small donations in money ; by a valua^ ble gift of a chest of tea, and a barrel of salted beef from a charitable merchant of this city (not of the congregation of St. Luke's), and by 'the kind efforts of a zealous young member of the congregation who has collected among bis friends a special fund for the relief of a few pressing cases. It is to be hoped that the establishment of a House of Industry ^ivill to some extent relieve the Incumbent from a burden of pauperism in his district, altogether disproportioned to the resources at his command. The debt on the building, which still continues, has prevented the members of St. Luke's Church from contributing to the Church Society as largely at might be desired. This debt has been decreased during the; fii .h 3.1 60 year by the proceeds of a Concert held at the Crystal Palace, to the amount of $352.45. There still, however, remains a debt of $1,088 27 on the building, which must be discharged before the congregation can sustain the expenses of public worship, and exhibit their liberality towards this and other Missionary objects. A donation of $20 has been made from the Sunday-school, during the year, to the Church Mission- ary Society, London, England. ST. Stephen's church. Rev. W. B. MoNTaoMERY writes : — Although the past has been a year of severe domestic affliction and bereavement to the Rector, yet has it been one of many mercies, and a gracious continuance of the Divine appro- bation and blessing on the ministry and ordinances of the Church in this parish. Our congregations have in no wise diminished, while an ever increasing love for the House of God has been encouragingly manifested in the regular attendance of many on the services of the sanctuary, notwith- standing the distances they have had to travel, and the very unfavorable state of the weather and roads during the past four months ; as well as in the great self-denial manifested by our esteemed Collectors for the general purposes of the Church Society, and the interest taken by our young people in providing a Christmas-tree and refreshments for the children of the Sunday-school, in connection with St. Paul's, Philipsburg, and in tastefully decorating the Church for the Christmas and New- year's festivals. The carriage sheds, referred to in last year's report, attached to St. Paul's Church, Philipsburg, have been built according to contract, and enclosed by a good substantial fence and gate, the work having been done in a manner which does credit to the contractor, Capt. Krans, and the whole well adapted to the great public convenience for which they have been erected. It afifords me pleasure to add that the Ladies' Association at Philips- burg have paid the last instalment on their organ ; while that at Pigeon Hill had praiseworthily aided in liquidating the debt on the Church and in the completion of their beautiful chancel chairs, which so much adorn that sacred edifice. Both Associations being now out of debt will doubtless be encouraged to undertake some other important schemes for the further benefit of the congregations with which they are con- nected. m Mi ■ 52 I ■! ! ! i^if The continued depreciation of the American currency greatly interferes, I regret to say, with our finances, and lessens the amount of our contri- butions to the several important objects contemplated by the Church Society in this Diocese. Lewis.— In the temporary removal of Mr. Lewis to Lake Brandon, I will endeavour to supply such informatioa of this Church as lies within my reach. There has been again an increase in the number of communicants, although the English families have somewhat dwindled in numbers, from the younger members of them leaving the place for employment or marrying off. The present number of communicants is 25. On one occasion this year 21 of them communicated. 68 During the year the furniture of the Church has been improved and added to by a new carpet in the chancel, and new coverings for the communion table, and cushions for pulpit and desk — at a cost of $30, obtained by the proceeds of a soiree and the sale of needlework alone by the Church Sewing Society. Also a font and Church books have been presented to the congregation, — the former by friends in England, the latter by the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge. The Church shed has also been completed, at a cost of $25. . SOREL. Rev. W. Anderson. — The parochial statistics for the past year, have been as follows : Baptisms, 7 ; Burials, II ; Marriages, 4 ; Communicants last Easter 60, and on Chrisi,, ^as-day 59, and number at present on the list 113 — exhibiting a total nu r of communicants in the parish in excess of the numbers repor d ;'v the last few years. This gratifying result has been chiefly attained by the admission to the Church in the sacrament of the Lord's Supper, of nearly the whole of the persons, 23 in number, confirmed by the Bishop in August last. No reliable infer- ence, however, can safely be drawn from such data, as the population of Sorel is, from local circumstances, of a peculiarly shifting character, and the Protestant element in it, though not diminished during the past year, can yet hardly be said to have increased. The collection, repeated again this year for Foreign Missions, resulted in the voluntary contri- bution of $121 25, the largest amount yet realized in any one year for this purpose. One half of this fund was handed to the Bishop for trans- mission to the Venerable S.P.G. in England, in aid of their Missions to the Heathen in the East ; and the remaining half was paid over to the Kev. W. Bond in aid of the French Mission of the Colonial and Conti- nental Church Society. Under the auspices of the Sabre vols Institute, an interesting work has been commenced, during the past year, in the neighbourhood of Sorel. A Church Mission has been undertaken to a settlement of Indians, of the Abenaquis tribe, located on the banks of the St. Francis, at its junction with the St. Lawrence, about twenty miles below Soiol. Mr. Octave Fortin, B.A., of Lennoxville, originally educated atSabrevois, ministers statedly in French to this congregation, and at other times elsewhere in Sorel and its vicinity. A school, under an Indian teacher of really superior qualifications, has been opened at St. Francis, and is well attended. The work is one of promising char- acter, yielding matter for deep thankfulness to God for the encourage- ment thus far afforded. It is yet, of course, and may, for some time to come, continue but the " day of small things " with this effort ; but the hope is prayerfully entertained that " He that openeth and no man shutteth," will eventually open a much wider door of usefulness, and hii ■$4 #1 m w m I ' I ) "i 64 crown the work with His abundant blessing. The sum of $42 was collected after a sermon preached in aid of the Sabrerois Institute, and with the amount already reported and some small private contributions previously sent in, make up a total for Sabrevois raised in the parish during the past year of upwards of $120. The Institute is also indebted to Miss Nelson of Sorel, and other friends, for their useful and valued gifts of some excellent quilts to the Boys' department at Sabrevois. The total amount realized from sermons and subscriptions for the Church Society is considerably in advance of the sum reported last year, as well as of the amount collected in the parish for any other Missionary pur- poses, domestic or foreign, amounting to $149 87}. In addition to these contributions a further sum of $70 was also raised among the congregation by the Rev. Mr. Allen, of Stanstead, in the Diocese of Quebec, towards liberating this Church from debt ; and by the Rev. Joseph Merrick, of Morin and MlUe Isles, in this Diocese, towards the erection of a Parsonage. The Endowment Fund has been increased by the payment of $400, by W. H. A. Davies, Esq. of Montreal, in liqui- dation of two of his notes, leaving at present in the bands of T. B. Anderson, Esq., the Treasurer, but one more note, for $200, fnally to discharge his munificent donation to the parish. Miss Guthbert and Mrs. Clark have also paid to the same fund their promised annual contribu- tions respectively of $80 and $20, deposited by the Treasurer in the bank, till, with the amount previously on deposit there, together with any other donations and subscriptions which may yet ha»tpily be re- ' ceived, a sum of sufficient value is realized to make, under ti^o direction of the Investment Committee, a satisfactory and final investment. The financial slatement, appended below, exhibits a large increase on the total amount reported last year: much of this increase is unquestionably owing to the systematic and untiring liberality of a few in the congre- gation, who, " constrained by the love of Christ," are ever " willing to distribute and ready to communicate." May God, our Saviour, both multiply their number and accept their offerings : may He raise up many more, who, " first giving themselves to the Jjord," will esteem it a plea- sure and a privilege to "minister to Hiqi of their substance;" and inclining the poor to become rich in faith, and the rich to abound in good works, may He form for Himself in Sorel that truest glory of a congregation — a people " adorning the doctrine of God their Saviour in all things." C. p. Abbott reports :— I have but little to report respecting my Mission this year. The Parsonage, although it was nearly completed two months since, remains now in about the same state, and £ believe that I shall not be relieved from my present inconvenient circumstances this winter. The various efforts which I have made throughout the year to liquidate the Church and Parsonage debt, have been liberally responded to ; but although I keenly feel the great detriment it is to my Mission to give such a Urge share of my time and attention to these matters, yet to allow to continue much longer the Church debt espe- cially (if it can possibly be avoided), would probably prove a greater, I, therefore, purpose not to relax these efforts. When I first commenced my duties in this Mission, I administered the Holy Communion every three months ; during the last year, bi-monthly ; and last Sacrament Sunday I notified my congregation that in future it would be celebrated monthly. From what I have been able to learn> more frequent communions have been attended, with very pleasing results elsewhere ; and, therefore, I can see no reason to doubt that to pursue the same plan here, by God's blessing, will produce the like result.^. The choir bids fair to become highly satisfactory as to numbers ; and there is every probability that we shall soon be able to procure the services of an efficient singing teacher to train thoroughly such adults and children in the Mission as may choose to receive his instructions. Upon the whole, I thought it would be better, under the Mission's present pecuniary embarrassment, not to solicit, as usual, contributions for the Church Society, &c., except simply to take up the prescribed annual coUectious la Church. The following items specify what has been raised in the Mission up to the present date, except one or two which I have not yet been able to ascertain : ■ - Widows' and Orphans' Fund $2 00 Sermon for Missionary purposes 41 65 Rev. CoNSTANTiNK. — Our subscriptions are small this year, our local work pressing heavily, as it will for some time to come, upon our slender resources. Something has, however, been done upon the inte- rior of our Church, and the Parsonage has received the comfortable addition of kitchen and shed. Special thanks are due to our zealous Churchwardens. We have to acknowledge, with many thanks, the gift of a handsome font from Mrs. Adams, of Montreal. In spiritual matters no previous year has brought so much satisfaction, the services being very well attended, and the Sunday-school steadily kept up throughout the year, doing its work in a remarkably satisfactory man- ner. Last year it was noted that Good Friday and Christmas-day were well observed among the people ; we are now able to add that Ascension-day was religiously observed by Divine service, attended by a good congregation. At a Confirmation, full choral service was per- formed in such a manner as to merit the approbation of the Lord Bishop ; and a choral service, of a still more satisfactory character as to its performance, was celebrated on Christmas-eve. Divine service on Sundays, morning and evening. Sunday-school in the afternoon. Services on the great festivals. Holy Communion monthly. Daily evening prayer during summer. Total contributions $252 85. I! '■ ! ST. ANDREWS. Rbv. R. Lonsdell. — In reviewing the effects of our labours, and the efforts of the congregation generally, we may hope that some progress has been made as regards the interests of the Church, identified as she is with the spiritual improvement of her children. The attentive and solemn demeanour of the congregation — together with the very great improvement of that part of our worship which consists of praise as well as of prayer, as also the increase in the number of communicants during the year, call forth our devout gratitude to that gracious God from whom cometh every good and perfect gift. Still we have to lament the irreligion and indifference of many to whom the means of grace are offered, and whom we beseech in Christ's name to be reconciled to God. The following are the sums collected in the Parish : 57 Cliurcli Socioty, Missionai^ i)uri)osos $(56 50 Annual Sermon, " " 5 00 D(» Widows' and Orphans' Fund 4 00 Do towards expenses of Synod, 3 00 Endowment Fund . . 81 00 I'roceeds of Bazaar 295 05 Wliich was applied to paying a debt on the Rectory, painting the outside work, and repairs of Church tower. Darnell, Rector. — At the close of another year, notes with much thankfulness and satisfaction the various efforts which have been made in this Parish to further the stability and efiRciency of the Church, as well as the measure of success which has been accorded to them. As will bo seen by the appended statement, a considerable sura has been raised for Church purposes, and that with a cheerful readiness which brings a double blessing. " God lovcth a cbeerful giver." There has been an increase both in the Sunday and Communion oflfer- tory. A deficit on account of the current expenses of last year to the amount of about $120, has been liquidated by a collection after a special sermon, and weekly subscriptions from adults ; besides which, the sum of $600 with interest account has been paid off from the debt upon the High School, which is now reduced to $1,200. It is believed that another year or two of persevering effort will remove the last vestige of this incubus ; it is, therefore, plainly the duty of this Parish to strain every nerve to the accomplishment of this object. In view of such an effort, the Church Society (much as it needs and deserves aid from all quarters) must necessarily modify its expectations as regards this local- ity. It is feared that $100 per annum, from all sources, is as much as can be spared during this pressure. As regards the spiritual progress of the Church in this place, it is hoped that it is in some degree commensurate with its material prosper- rity. The attendance upon the various Church services has been if any. thing upon the increase, especially as regards adults ; the communicants numbering, iu St. Johns, 150 ; and in Lacadie, 24. The junction of Lacadie with Laprairie is strongly recommended; together they would form quite as desirable a Mission, and quite as good a field as many that are now occupied.. Five hundred dollars have been subscribed towards a new Church in Lacadie, to bo placed ten miles distant from Laprairie, and more would be forthcoming if the union could be effected and a diligent and faithful Missionary appointed to take up the ground. With so many other duties pressing upon him, it is impossible for the Rector, when unaided, to do justice to that district. -1: ■: ii; 58 The following are the sums collected : Vcvf rents paid in 9522 00 Sunday Offertory 275 00 Communion do and donations fur poor 76 00 8ormon for oflTortory 16 00 Weekly subscriptions for deticit at larft Eoator 00 00 Special sermon for " " 50 00 Subscription for liquidating dobt on ]Iigh School, paid in. . 21G 50 Bazaar by ladies 381 90 Subscription to Church Society 43 60 Do for last year 10 00 For Church in Urome Woods 19 50 I'resont of Clock for Church 10 00 Widows' and Orphans' Fund 16 00 81,094 40 VAUDREUIL. Rbv. D. Lindsay writes:— I am glad to say that the subscription list for the Church Society is larger than last year. The collections after the sermons for the Missionary purposes are somewhat less. We have, however, every reason to be thankful for the progress God has vouch- safed to us during the past twelve months. The visit of the Bishop to administer the rite of Confirmation, has given, as it always does, a higher tone to our spiritual life ; and the number of our communicants has steadily increased. The parish has undergone some changes through the appc'ntment of the Rev. G. C. Robinson to Clarendon. The funds of the Society hardly warranted an increased expenditure in this locality ; so Fulford, since the 22nd of October last, has been placed by the Bishop under the care of the Rev. T. Fyles ; and the Rev. Mr. Fortin, who is stationed at Boscobel (a Mission at present under my care), gives a service once a fortnight in this parish. We thus provide the usual Sunday services. The amount of pastoral labour has been much increased by the loss of 69 my colleague. I think vre are becoming self-sustaining. The amounts collected indicate that at no distant date, the whole or greater part of my allowance should be giren up, and then a claim for some assistance to reach the scattered settlements, might be made. These places should not be neglected, for they are, in my opinion, the very fields for Mission- ary labour, and for which our Mission Board should take special care. All uur local works— such as Sunday-schools, choirs, ladies' associations — are doing well. The Sunday-school at St. Luke's, has just procured a new library, towards which were some liberal subscriptions. The old one has been divided among less favoured communities — an act with which I was exceedingly pleased. Of the amount collected for the support of the Parish, the following distribution has been made : $121 12 to the Rev. G. C Uobinson, to make up his stipend with the Church Society grant of $200 to $400 per annum ; $335 to the Rev. D.Lindsay, to make up his stipend, with $365 from Clergy fund to $700 per annum ; $10 for arrears ; and $65 43 for the disposal of the Parish. I sincerely pray that the Society may be sustained, and able to give to the new places which are rising up the same generous sup. port which we, for so many years, have received from the S.P.G. Rbv. T. W. Mussbn reports :— -During the first two months of the past year the incumbent was incapacitated by severe illness from attending to the discharge of his duties. He was enabled, however, to secure the continuance of the public services of the Church. 60 The Bumtner months were cliiefly occupied in preparing candidates fur confirmation. And at the visitation of bis Lordship the Bishop, on the 26th of August last, tweuty-scven persons solemnly renewed the vows of their Baptismal covenant — two of the candidates receiving Daptigra only the day before. On this occasion, the Bishop consecrated sumo additional ground, which the demands of the Mission required to bo included in the graveyard. There is little further worthy of remark, except that it might be men- tioned, that the girls attending our Sunday-school have organi^sed a Sewing Society, with the intention of aiding in the internal improve- ments and decoration of our Church. It is hoped that the past success of this Society will encourage its members to proceed in their praise- worthy undertaking. Rev. a. T. Whittbn : — In last year's Report, we expressed a hope that this year would shew an improvement in our subscriptions to the Church Society. This hope has been in a measure realized, as the Re- port will shew, though not so fully as we could wish. The cry of hard times and scarceness of money exceeds even that of last year, and I think very justly too. We have reason nevertheless to thank God for the measure of success that has attended our feeble efforts in this Mission during the past year ; for the health and strength afforded to myself, enabling me to perform service regularly at three stations, (at two of which I have Sunday-schools;) and to carry on the work of the Ministry generally : and that throughout the whole of my Mission, com- prising West Shefford, and parts of East Farnham, Granby and Brome, an increased zeal is manifested amongst our people, for our holy religion. There remains however, much to be done, and I pray God, that by the sending to us the grace of his Holy Spirit, we may bo stirred up to greater efforts and increased zeal in the work, that many sinners may be converted and gathered home to the Church, that one fold under the One Shepherd, Jesus Christ our Lord. 61 The amounts raised in the Mission, the past year, are as follows : SiibHcriptions to Church Soolotjr 9 21 65 Miiwionary purposoi) 3 90 Clcrgyman'8 Htipond 108 60 Donations to I'ariionagc 66 0^ rrocoeds of a FeHtival 36 00 Total W26 1>1 A neat and substantial fence has been made round the Churchyard, and one side of the Church newly shingled, the last summer, the expense of which I do not know, as it was done by the united labour of the peo- ple themselves. UNITED MISSIONS OP GRANBY, ROXTON, AND NORTH SHEFFORD. Rev. W. Jonks :— The Missionary at this station has been labouring, he trusts diligently and faithfully, in his Master's service, " teaching and prcmonishing, feeding and providing for the Lord's family, seeking for Christ's sheep that are dispersed abroad, and for his children who are la the midst of this naughty world, that they may be saved through Christ for ever." (Ordination service.) Although now and then, here and there, a member of the fold seems to be wavering in his duty to God and in his affection for bis Church, yet others are happily to be found who, by the holiness of their lives, the loveliness of their Christian Spirit, and the earnestness of their prayers, are holding up our hands and enabling us to bes*- onward the standard of the Cross. With respect to the Church Society I am afraid that until our Missions are settled upon a firmer pecuniary basis, and our local wants better supplied, we shall not be able to render any considerable aid to the great and holy work of Christian Missions either domestic or foreign. We send our accustomed contribution and shall endeavour to add thereto from year to year. The Missionary tenders his tbanks to those who collected for this Report. The Committee of the Central Board, in completing its sketch of the operations of the Diocesan Church Society during the past year, would devoutly acknowledge that the success which has thus far attended its labours, affords matter for deep thankfulness to the Great Head of the Church ; and should stimulate us all to fresh exertions in helping on the good work. But while the Board hail with satisfaction some indications of growing strength *-. r I i ll i it II ir 1.^ 62 and progrosfl, as shown from the published returns of the different Missionaries, still they cannot refrain from making known how urgent arc the Church's culls for help in many of t)ie remote set- tlements of the Diocese. There is enough of spiritual destitution to employ our largest liberality. An awakened impulse of Missionary enterprise is much needed. If our borders are extending, and our population annually increasing, it is surely a reason for the Church to wake up, and to enlarge her heart, and to increase the measure of her Missionary contributions. The body is made up of limbs and members ; the Church is composed of individual.-? ; let each indi- vidual then enquire what his duty as a member of the body is, and then diligently and prayerfully set himself to perform it. Something more is required from us than mere profession, or the scanty offering doled out by worldly prudence, and which is at once disproportionate to the magnitude of the object for which it is solicited, and unworthy the cause to which it is to be applied. May Almighty God so dispose our hearts, that we all may mani- fest more interest, and make greater sacrifices than we have ever hitherto done for advancing the Missionary work of the Church Society of the Diocese. The Board would again take this oppoituaity of impressing upon each Parish and Mission in the Diocese, the duty of endea- vouring to secure some partial endowment for its own maintenance. It is to be hoped that those Parishes which have participated in the liberality of the S. P. G's grant for endowments will manifest their gratitude for the same by using unremitting efforts for the yearly augmentation of the fund which they now possess, in order that they may gradually attain to a state of self support ; and that in those missions where no endowment as yet exists, strenuous ex- ertions should at once be made for its formation, either by special contributions, or by a monthly or quarterly offertory, with a view to create a fund, which, in the course of time, would help to pro- duce some permanent provision for the resident Missionary. The Committee, in conclusion, feel that they are justified in drawing attention to a subject which has been a means of largely benefitting the benevolent and Missionary Societies in the mother Church : — they allude to the matter of bequests. It is desirable 68 to call the iittcnlion of the rich among us to the cliiims which thin Society has upon thctn, and which ought not to bo forgotten in their final disposal of their worldly substance. Wo may bo per- mitted to remind them that a very largo proportion of the incomes of the two Venerable Societies in our Fatherland, to whom, under God, the Church in this Province is mainly indebted for her very existence, — the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel, and the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge,— was derived from funds of which these bodies hud become possessed as the recipients of legacies. This subject occupied a part of our last Report, but whether with eflFect or not, time alone can tell. It is pleasing, liowcver, on this occasion, to have to record a bequest of 0500 made by a deceased resident of Dunham to that Parish, as an ex- pression of gratitude for having had made known to him the way of salvation through Jesus Christ, by the ministrations of the Church ; thereby furnishing to others an example of the pious dedication of wealth, as far as lies in their power, for perpetuating the sacred services of the Church in their own neighbourhoods, for the benefit of those who come after them. {Vide "Form of Bequest," in Appendix.) The Committee cannot permit their Report to go forth to the Diocese, without referring with sentiments of undiminished regret, to the shortly expected departure of His Excellency Lieut.- Gen. Sir F. Williams, K.C.B., the true friend and ever rearly helper of all undertakings connected with the Church, and a liberal annual contributor to the funds of this Society. His Excellency will long live in the grateful remembrance of Church- men in this Diocese, and have thtiv good wishes and prayers. i Model Schools.— The numbers for the year in these schools are: Boys, 183; girls, 125; in&nts, 116. Total, 374. CouMTRY Schools.— The Society has now, in connection with this Committee, twenty schools in the country parts, on whose books are about 850 scholars. The Committee desire to reiterate the deep regret— often before expressed— that the Ainds of the Society will not admit of an increased grant, enabling them to ro-occupy the ground lately abandoned, because of the withdrawal of a large portion of the aid formerly extended to the cause of education in this Diocese.
