THE Society for promoting Christian Knowledge, was rstablished in 1699. Its object was to extend the blessings of the Gospel both at home and abroad, by supporting Schools and sending out Missionaries, particularly to India and the East— It has since made over these latter to the. So- ciety for promoting the Gospel in Foreign parts, and now direct its attention to the encouragement of schools, and the distribution of Bibles and Prayer Books and also religious Tracts. And although its operations are extended m con- formity with, and to increase the influence of the Chu -h of England, yet it circulates the Scriptures without or with its Tracts according to the demand. The advantages of the institution are, that it affords a suppply of books of a religi- ous, moral, and instructive tendency, which are furnished to its subscribing members at a price for distribution, not ex- ceeding three fifths of their cost on an average— to all other persons it offers the same books at the price charged to wliolesale book-sellers in London— and to schools founded on the principles of the society— the District Committee gives gratuitously such works as are on its list, adapted to the purpose either of instruction or reward to the children.
