Latin Prose Composition. Mathematics.— Euclid, Books I. and II. Arithmetic— Algebra, to the end of Simple Equation. § 2. 11 EXAMINATIONS IN ARTS. I. PREVIOUS EXAMINATION. This Examination will take place, in the case of Students entering in the Michaelmas Term, at the end of the Easter Term of the second year. The subjects for this Examination will be : Divinity.— One of the Historical Books of the New Testament in Greek. Evidences of Christianity. Church Catechism. Classics.— Portions of two Greek and two Latin authors. Latin Prose Composition. Mathematics.— Euclid. Books I., II., HL, IV., VI. Algebra, to Binomial Theorem inclusive. Trigonometry, to Solution of Triangles in- clusive. Elementary Statics. Elementary Dynamics, to the end of Recti- linear Motion of a Particle. The particular authors to be fixed at the beginning of the Lent Term of the preceding year. „ . . . ^ The names of Students who pass this Examination shall be arranged in three classes, in alphabetical order ; the first class consisting of those who shall have obtained at least half the whole amount of marks in each subject : the second of those who shall have passed creditably, though below this standard: the third of those to whom the examiners shall have only not refused their certificate of approval. Any Student who shall have obtained a first class in the Previous Examination, and shall also have passed a satisfac- tory examination in the Honor Subjects in Classics at the end of the second year, shall be allowed to declare for Classical Honors, and shall be exempted from attendance at Mathematical Lectures during his third year. IS The like exemption will be granted on the like conditions {mutatis mutandis) to Mathematical Students. Those Students who shall have been rejected at the Previous Examination of their own year, or who shall have been absent ^rom such Examination, shall be required to attend the Previous Examination of the succeeding year. If any Student shall absent himself from the Previous Examination of his year, without the written permission of the Provost, he shall be considered not to have kept the Lent Term of that year. Students entering in the Lent or Easter Term must offer themselves for -examination at the same time with those who entered the preceding October. IL EXAMINATION FOR THE DEGREE 0^ B.A. PASS EXAMINATION. The refrular time for passing this Examination will be at the beginning of the tenth term of residence. By-Term men may present themselves at the same time with those who entered in the preceding October. Those who have lost one or two terms may present themselves at the same time with Students of their own year. But in both these cases the degree will not be conferred until the Student shall have kept nine complete terms. All Students, not candidates for Honours, intending to proceed to the Degree of B.A. must go through this Examination. The list will be published in the College Hall in alphabetical order. Classics.— One or more books of two Greek and two Latin Classical authors. Latin Prose Composition. Greek and Roman History. Mathematics.— Euclid, Books I., IL, HI-, IV., VL Arithmetic. Algebra, to Binomial Theorem inclusive. Plane Trigonometry, to Solution of Triangles inclusive. Mechanics. Hydrostatics. The particular authors to be fixed before the end of the Easter Term of the second year. HONOUR EXAMINATION AT B.A. Those who shall have been approved at the Pass Examina- tion for B.A. may present themselves for further examination for Honours in Classics or Mathematics. The result of each examination will be published in the College Hall, and in the public prints, in three classes : the order of merit in each subject being determined by the number of marks obtained in this examination together with those obtained in that subject in the Pass Examination. The Examiners in Classics or Mathematics may, at their discretion, add a fourth Honourary class to their Honour list, consisting of those who, not being candidates for Honours, ■ i 14 have highly distinguished themselves in the classical or mathematical parts of the Pass Examination respectively. Candidates for Honours who shall have claimed exemption from examination either in the Classical or in the Mathe- matical Subjects appointed for the ordinary Degree Examina- tion, if they shai: have failed to obtain a Class in Honours, will not be eligible for the Degree of B.A. until they shall have passed the ordinary Examination. § 3. EXAMINATION & EXERCISES IN DIVINITY. Bachelor of Divinity.— The Candidate will be required to write a Latin Thesis on some point of doctrine connected with the 39 Articles, and an English Thesis on some Scriptural subject, to be appointed by the Examiners. He will be required to preach an English sermon before the University. He will be required to pass an examination in some Latin or Greek Treatise or Trea- tises to be appointed by the Examiners. Doctor of Divinity.— The Candidate will be required to write a Latin and an English Thesis, as in the case of a Bachelor of Divinity, and to preach an Enghsh ser- mon before the University. The Examiners in Divinity shall be the Professor of Divinity, and two Graduates in Divinity to be appointed by the Corporation. §4. EXERCISES IN LAW. Exercise for the Degree of D.C.L. The Candidate will be required to compose a Thesis in Law, upon some sub- ject appointed by the Chancellor. STATUTES OF TRINITY COLLEGE. CAP. I. THE CORPORATION. § 1 Whereas, by an Act of the Legislature of the Province of Canada, (15 Vic, cap. 32,) the Lord Bishop of Toronto, or in case of the division of the said Diocese, then the Bishops of any Dioceses into which the Diocese of Toronto may hereafter be divided ; the Trustees of Trinity College, and the College Council of the said Trinity College, not less than three in number, were constituted and established a body politic an: corporate, and empowered to make and establish such and so many rules, orders and regulations as they shall deem useful or necessary for the government of the said College ; be it ordained : 1. That a meeting of the Corporation of Trinity College be held on the Tuesday before the second Wednesday in every month, with the exception of the months of August and September. 2. That the Chancellor of the University of Trinity Col- lege and the Vice-Chancellor shall severally have power to call a special meeting of the Corporation whenever either of them shall consider it to be necessary. 3. That five members shall form a quorum of the Corpdra- tion. CAP. II. COLLEGE OFFICERS. § 1. The Head of Trinity College shall be styled the Prct vest of Trinity College. 16 § 2. The Provost shall bo a Clergyman in Holy Orders of the United Church of T^^ngland and Ireland. § 3. The Provost for the time being shall be the Professor of Divinity in the said College. § 4. Such and so many Professorships, in the different Arts and Faculties, as shall from time to time be deemed necessary or expedient, shall be established in the Col- lege by the Corporation. § 5. Every Professor of Arts or Faculties in the said Col- lege shall be a member of the Established Church of England and Ireland, and shall, upon his admission to office, sign and subscribe the Thirty-Nine Articles of Religion as declared and set forth in the Book of Com- mon Prayer, and the Three Articles of the Thirty-sixth Canon. § 6. The Provost and Professors of Trinity College shall be appointed and removed by the Corporation. § 7. No such appointment or removal shall be made except a majority at least of the Corporation be present, a majority of those present concurring in such appoint- ment or removal. § 8. No proposition for the removal of a Provost or Pro- fessor may be submitted to the Corporation except through the Chancellor, whose duty it shall be to sub- mit such proposition on a written requisition, addressed to him by not less than five members of the Corporation. § 9. Every appointment and removal shall be by instrument, under the seal of the Corporation ; and, in the case of a removal, this instrument shall state particularly the cause of such removal. § 10. The duties of the Provost and of the several Profes- sors shall be such as shall from time to time be declared by the Statutes, Orders, and Regulations. § 11. The Provost shall reside in the College, and it shall be his duty to admit Students, to see that the Rules, {Statutes, ana lieguiaiions ui me iyui;c^c uc icm/tx^^.xj observed, to enforce discipline, to order and preside over College Exercises, to have an active inspection over >. >. I 17 i all the internal affairs of the College, and to regulate the inferior officers and servants. § 12. In the absence of the Provost, or during the vacancy of the office, the Senior Professor in Arts shall have the powers and perform the duties of the Provost. § 13. The Senior Professor in Arts shall assist the Provost, when called upon, in the performance of the duties above described. § 14. Lecturers and Teachers in particular branches of education may be appointed from time to time by the Corporation, who shall regulate their duties and emolu- ments. § 15. The Bursar, who shall also be the Secretary, shall be appointed by the Corporation: and, for the faithful discharge of his duties, he shall give security to the satisfaction of the said Corporation. § 10. It shall bo the duty of the Bursar to keep the College accounts, to inspect and take care of the building, and report repairs to the Corporation : to have an immediate charge of the moveable property, and to superintend the Steward and inferior officers, under the direction of the Provost. He shall account to the Corporation at the last meeting of the Corporation in each term. His accounts shall also at all times be open to the inspec- tion of the Corporation. CAP. III. THE COUNCIL. § 1. The College Council shall consist of thirty members, none of whom shall be a member of the governing body of any other University within the Province at the time f.C t,;^ /^1r>/.f;nn Av nnminntinn in t.hfi Coiinfiil of Trinitv College, or while he is serving therein ; except he be an ex officio member of such governing body. 18 § 2 The Chancellor, the Provost of Trinity College, and the Senior Professors of Classics and Mathematics shall bo ex officio members of the Council. 8 3 Twenty-six members shall be appointed: sixteen from ' the Diocese of Toronto, five from the Diocese of Huron, and five from the Diocese of Ontario. S 4. That the Bishops of Huron and Ontario shall nominate the members of Council from their respective Dioceses, and the Bishop of Toronto five of the members from his Diocese, the remaining eleven members from the Diocese of Toronto being elected by the Corporation. § 5. That absence from the meetings of the Corporation for the space of one year, without leave obtained of the Corporation and entered on their minutes, shall occasion any member of Council to vacate his seat ipso facto. ^ 8 6. That, on the occurrence of one or more vacancies ^ among the eleven members of Council elected by the Corporation, such vacancy or vacancies shall be notified to the Corporation by the Secretary at their next monthly meeting, and the Secreiary .hall thereupon be instructed to send a written notice to every member of the Corporation, informing him that an election of one or more members of Council will take place at the monthly meeting of the Corporation next following. No such election however shall be proceeded with except a majority of the whole Corporation be present. A majority of those present shall suffice to make a valid election, and the voting shall be by ballot. R 7 The Bishops, who are members of the Corporation, * Bhall, according to seniority of consecration, preside at all meetings of the Corporation ; and, in the absence of any Bishop, the Chancellor, if present, or the Vice- Chancellor shall preside, and, in the absence of the Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor, the senior member of the Council present shall preside. « No proposition for the enactment, repeal, or alteration of any rule, statute or ordinance of the University or College Bh^il be submitted to the Corporation except !i 19 through a committee to be appointed for that purpose at the monthly meeting in January in every year ; and this committee shall give notice at a monthly meeting of their intention to submit such change to the Corpo- ration at the monthly meeting next following. CAP. IV. THE TRUSTEES. § 1. There shall be three Trustees, and any vacancy occur- ring in their number shall be filled by the Corporation in like manner as in the election of members of Council. CAP. V. 1 REGULATIONS FOR STUDENTS IN ARTS AND DIVINITY. DIVINITY. § 1. The following persons may be admitted to the Divinity Class : Graduates in Arts of Trinity College or of other Universities recognised by Trinity College. Under- graduates of Trinity College who have attended the Lectures of the Arts course for one year, provided that they have obtained the approval of the Provost and Professors, and are of the full age of twenty-one years. § 2. Previously to admission each Student must subscribe the Thirty-nine Articles. § 3. The period of study will in all cases be two years ; and no certificate in the Theological department can be Ki'imiCU H^bUlU Vine viJ'sv. 20 ARTS. § 4. Candidates for admission must have entered upon tlieir sixteenth year, and must produce testimonials of good conduct. § 5. They must pass the University Matriculation Exami- nation at the commencement of their first Term. § 6. The Provost and Professors in Arts shall have power for the enforcement of discipline to pun ih Students, severally, by imposition, and collectively by confinement to gates, or to the College grounds. § 7. Questions of discipline involving the punishment of rustication or expulsion, shall be referred to a com- mittee to be nominated annually by the Corporation at their monthly meeting in January. § 8. Every sentence of expulsion si ill be confirmed by the Chancellor. ■% 1- TERMS. § 9. The academical year shall consist of three Terms : Michaelmas Term, from October 1st to December 20th. Lent Term, ^rom January 10th, to the 2nd Saturday before Easter. Easter Term, from the Saturday after Easter to July 1st. § 10. Undergraduates will ordinarily commence residence at the beginning of the Michaelmas Term, but may, on sufl&cient grounds, be admitted at a by-term. § 11. Residence will be ordinarily required of Students during the whole of each Term, in order to keep that Term. This regulation may, however, be dispensed with on special grounds approved by the Provost and Professors. Students Avhoso parents live in Toronto may obtain a dispensation from residence, after a special application made to the Provost for that purpose ; and such Stu- dents shall be considered to keep their Terms without residence, provided that they observe the regulations respecting uttendance at chapel and at lectures. § 18. All Students will be required to provide themselves with a cap and gown, according to a prescribed fashion ; or, being graduates of otlier Universities, may use the gowns belonging to their respective Degrees, which they will bo expected to wear at Chapel, in Hall, and at Lectures, and also when they appear in public, unless beyond certain limits to be from time to time defined. They must also procure a surplice, to be worn in chapel at appointed times. CHAPEL. J >. § 14. There will be morning and evening prayers daily, during Term time, according to the rites of the United Church of England and Ireland. § 15. Every person resident in College shall attend at such services, unless prevented by illness, or by some casual hindrance to be admitted by the Provost. § 16. Strangers wishing to attend the College Chapel on Sundays and Saints' days must apply for permission to the Provost. LECTURES. § 17. Public notice will be given at the close of each year of the subjects of the Lectures for the ensuing year ; and particular notice shall be given by each Professor of his Lectures during each Term. 22 § 18. Irregularity in attendance at Chapel and at Lectures renders any Student liable to the loss of his Terra, at the discretion of the Corporation. SCHOLARSHIPS. ■■I i S i' § 19. The four Foundation Scholarships shall be tenable for one year only ; but it shall be in the power of the Cor- poration to continue his Foundation Scholarship to any student who, having failed to gain another Scholarship at the end of the First or Second year, shall be reported by the Examiners to be specially deserving. § 20. Instead of three Allan Scholarships of X30 each, as heretofore, there shall be two of £45 each (subject to the Founder's approval.) § 21. At the end of the First and Second Years there shall be awarded according to the result of the College Examination, 1 Wellington Scholarship of. £50 1 Allan « ^45 IBurnside " £30 1 Dickson " ^30 each tenable for one year. § 22. At the end of the Third Year the Bishop Strachan Scholarship and the remaining Dickson Scholarship shall be awarded to Honour-men in Classics or Mathe- matics, in order of merit, but conditionally ; that is to say, the stipends shall not be paid to the successful candidates unless they shall pass the examination for the Degree of Bachelor of Arts in the following term, and shall obtain a Class in Honours. § 23.
