Church and other ceilings vary so much in size and shape that it is impossible to convey any idea, in our limited space, of forms into which our niaterial may be worked to accommodate them. Prospective purchasers, sending us diagram or lloor plan of any large hall or church, logtlhei with the necessary cross sections to enable us to get the correct idea of the shape of the ceiling, will receive from us a plan, drawn to scale, showing how our work may be adapted to their particular rooms, together with estiinate for the same. They should state whether the ceiling is to be in a new building or over plastered or wood ceiling. .Also give the direction in which the beams run, and state what size of cornice, if any, is desired, being careful lo see that the tops of windows and doors will not interfere with such a cornice. \\}\]r. We find, however, liia'i a painstaking carpenter, tintier or decorator, can usually do a vory satislactory job, often r\, well as our own men. The large number and olt repeated orders from distant points lo be put up by local mechanics g^o to prove this. The usual tools needed are a hammer, saw (for the furring), chalk-line, and tinners' hand shears. When writing for a design of, or ordering, a ceiling, mention alt the particulars necessary for planning the ceiling. The archiiecfs plans, or a dia>iram showing the si/es, off-sets, stair openings, elevators and fixed chaml^l-ers, is usually sufticieni. Mention wliether a cornice or a border moulding is desired, or can extend all around the room, or whether a wood n 'ing will be used lo finish the corner. If a church ceiling, send tloor plan and a section, with particulars as to cornice, vKNirLATlON and fllANi' s. oval, to be returned with order. Corrections can then be made, ilh the invoice and bill of lading. If time is short, the time When particulars are received, a plan is drawn to scale and submitted fot .1 list o^ materials reipiired and directions written. The plan, etc., are then sent lost in seiuling for approval may be saved. If the building is an old one and the ceiling is plastered, the furring strips can be secured with longer nails, reaching into the joist. Do not remove the plaster, as the work can be done just as well with it on, and much dirt saved. If thtre is a plaster cornice, give its depth and projection. [I it is sound it may rernaiti uncovered, the metal terminating against it with a small moulding, but if cracked, a cove cornice can be supplied large enough to cover .mil support it. Kor attaching the ceiling, the joists or old celing should be, for the smaller fiat panels, ceiled with % in. rough pine or spruce boards, and (or the larger and all the raised panels, furring strips i x 2 in. should be put up, spaced as indicated on the plan. Where mouldings are lo run, wider strips are necessary, i x 3 in., 1 x 4 in., i x6 in,, or 'v.o 1 x z in., according to their size. The furring is first piit up crossways of the joists, then shorter pieces are fitted \\\ between the first, all to be lludi and t.KSKi.. The panels are then tacked in place, the cove and borders put up, and then the mould- ings separating borders or njarking divisions. The mouldings are lo be luiilcd close lo iheir outer edges. Wire nails are used entirely — 7 in. x No. 16 for the panels ; 1 '.. in. x .\o. lb (usually) for the mouldings, and i in. x No. 1(1 for the covers and borders. When up, the ceiling will need one or lw\i coats of paint. As the stamped pattern makes sutlicieni ornameiUation, more decoration is not necessary. .V "I-LAT" finish, with one tint on the border, one on the ct>ve, owv on the central panels, ami otu- on the nu>uldings, is '.ne ordinary treatment, but it may be varnished, grained, bronzed or gilded, as you wish. Church ceilings are ahnost always of special arrangeuieui, and we will be pleased to ofter designs and estimates whenever particulars are received. The constant use, since inlroiluciion, of these ceilings by the school boards of this and other cities, prv^ves how satisfactory they are for public schools and similar buildings. .Architects or owners who wish special ilesigns or arrangemenls will please iiulicate v : it is wanted, or send drawing, and we shall be pleased to do all possible to meet Iheir wishes. 54 'Tin: l"(;dlqi< ^(cttll I^oofiilg tJo., OsliqA-iq, Oi.\\. D irectlons "for Ap[ jying Eoibossad Ceilings Where the Centre--fielcl is Laid DIagonaJJy. Ceilings of this k iitl may be put up either on furring strips or sheathing boards ('.. or 5 -inch pine or spruce boards are the best). It put up on furring strips, these strips must come so as to be above the mouldings and above all the joints of panels and borders. Strips I X 2 inches are the best for the panels. The strips that go above the mouldings 'hould be i inch wider than the mouldings themselves. The working plan which we send along with each ceiling shows proper spacing of these strips. Begin by putting on the cove, nailing it top and bottom with i-inch nails, as show[i by detail drawing accompan- ing ceiling. Mitre and match the pattern of cove at all angles. For an insido angle a cope joint is thfl best. Next put oi. the bordc, keeping the proper distance awry from the cove, as shown by detail drawing. .\Iitte and match pattern at all angles. Nail up all the joints tight with -^-inch nails. Next put on the mouldings. They must be mitred at all angles. Nail up with 2-inch .lails The inside moulding of ceiling generally has a flange, and this llange must be kept toward centre of room. To lay the panels of the centre-fiek. of ceiling we generally strike a line through the centre of the room or through the centre gas pipe. .\long this line we lay the untrinin =d panels, centring the first panel on the gas pipe or in the centre of the room. The points of the bead of panels should be kept close together. Next, using the panels trimmed on two sides, cover the untrimnied edges of the panels first put up with the trimmed sides of these panels, leaving their unlrimmed edges to be covered by succeeding panels. Proceed in this way until the whole surface is covered. Trim off the panels close to the inside moulding of border, covering its flange, and nail up tight with i-inch nails. WHEN THE PANELS ARE LAID SQUARE WiTH THE ROOM the general directions for pulling up are: I'irst put up the panels, as they are of definite size, and the width of borders and cove may be varied to suit them ; next put on the border, then the cove, and lastly the mouldings. • TO PUT UP CORRUGATED IRON CEILINGS. These ceilings are put up on irring strips. They are usually '^ inch thick and 3 inches wide. (Strips should be ' inch wider than the moulding which is to be nailed upon 1 em.) Tl. inner strips should be used where necessary. Tliey are na'led to the joists with wire nails, and must be level and straight. Tlie plan sent wah ev^'^y ceiling shows the proper placing of these strips. Where there is plaster on the ceiling longer nails are required to reach the joists. The sheets are held up by one man on ;i straight edge or level support, while another nails around the edge with small wire nails. The dilKrent sheets are marked so that no confusion need arise. (We always send the nci'essary nails for the iron work.) If there is ;i cornice, a wall strip must he put on, and the cove, whether plain, corrugated, or beaded, is tacked to it on the bottom edge and to llie first furring strip at the lop. The iiiouldings are then put on ; those for the panelled ceilings art sent in such lengths thai the joints will come at their intersection, and so be co\ered with rose'tes.
