In that year owing to the increase in the population and the great influx of immigrants, the Hotel-Dieu Nunnery was found to be inadequate to the accomodation of the indigent sick, and in conse- quence four rooms were hired in a house in Chaboillez Square, as a temporary hospital, by a number of philanthropic citizens, conspicuous among whom were Rev. John Bethune, Rev. Henry Esson, and Dr. Blackwood. 1^ After a year's experience of the new institution, it was decided to erect a permanent building with provision for a larger number of patients. Accordingly, on the 25th April, 1820, a meeting of the subscribers to the establishment of a General Hospital in ^this city was held in the Court House, the Hon. John Richardson in the chair, when several of the most prominent citizens were elected managers of the institution. Isaac W. Clarke, was elected first president. In November 1820, the land upon which the Hospital now stands, then known as Marshall's Nursery was purchased, and the MonTreai, Genkrai., HospiTai,, erected on that site was devoted by deed : To the reception of patients of all diseases usually admitted into such hospitals in Great /iritain, rvithout distinction of religious denomination. The corner stone of the main body of the present building was laid on the 6th June, 182 1, and was ready for the reception of patients the following May. A royal charter was granted by H. M. George IV, in January of 1823, incorporating the Society of the Montrkai^ General, Hospital. In the year 183 1, the Hon. John Richardson died, and as a record of his services rendered to the Hospital, it was decided to build a wing to be called the " Richardson wing," which was completed and opened for the reception of patients in I832. The Hon. John Molson, who had been vice-president since 1823, succeeded to the office of president and held it till his decease in 1835. Alexander vSkakel, L.L.D., who had been the Secretary of the institution from its inception died in 1846. U ) ^ 4» in 1848, the much respected widow of the late Hon. Chief Justice Reid, expressed her wish to build a wing to correspond with the Richardson wing, as a monument to her venerated husband ; and in 1849 the well known Reid wing was conveyed to the Society. In 1866, the land opposite the Hospital was purchased and secured to the Institution by the generosity of Mr. Wm. Molson and Mr. J. G. Mackenzie. In 1868, a separate building for contagious diseases was built in rear of the Richardson wing and detached from it, which did good service for many years until this class of diseases was taken over by the City Council, in 1894. One noticeable feature in the history of this Institution, is, that all great additions made to its buildings have been erected as monuments in memory of deceased friends of the Institution. Thus in 1871, a building to be called aftec his name was subscribed for and erected in memory of the late Thomas Morland, to be used as a Children's Hospital. Coming now to the improvements and additions of later date, the two grand surgical wings known as the " Greenshields " and the "Campbell" wings, were erected and opened for the reception of patients in 1893, through the generosity of Mr. David J. Greenshields and Lord Mount Stephen. The interior of the old part of the Hospital, which had become antiquated, ■was entirely renewed and rebuilt on the most modern plans, at a cost of nearly |;ioo, ooo including the verj' complete Pathological Laboratory, the outer walls alone remaining, relics of the traditions of the noble founders. These renovations were completed early in 1896. Nor must the Training School for nurses, which has proved under the management of Miss Livingston a most unqualified success, be omitted. It was founded in 1890, and stands second to none in the world for efficiency, discipline* and esprit de corps. 5' ♦ ♦ ♦ JM^ OME ten years since, the need of proper Surgical Instruments at the Hospital having been found a serious obstacle to its usefulness a number of friends and others, to whom the cry of suffering humanity appealed strongly, organised and carried through a most successful Bazaar, from which was realized about $7,000.00 ; this was applied to the furnishing of such Instru- ments as then seemed most necessary. This fund is now exhausted and the need of a new fund is seriously felt. About a year ago, many who were more or less prominent in the former effort were joined by others desirous of again renewing the depleted treasury, and if possible of establishing^ a permanent Surgical Instrument fund of at least $10,000.00. The result is the present Fair ; and the Executive Com- mittee deems it a privilege to place the undertaking before those who are able to give ; if only to the extent of a sub- scription through the Official Books that have been issued over the signature of the Chairman of the Executive Committee. The Fair has the official sanction of the Board of mana- gement of the Hospital, as more fully shown in the following eytract of the minutes of that body. Copy of resolution passed at the meeting of the Com- mittee of Management of the Montreal General Hospital, November i8th, 1895. J. PATTON, Secretary. RESOLVED : That the Commitiee of Management of the Montreal (General Hospital do hereby heartily approve of the proposition from friends of the Hos- pital to raise the sum of $10,000 00 for the purchase of instruments and appliances for the Surgical Wards of the Hospital, and do grant the patronage and approval of the Board of Governors to the project upon the followtng express condii.ons : I.
