AN'/.A f lilN OF TirK Montreal Amateur Athletic Association. ->«!»<- See ! like a jev.el burning Upon a silver hand, Fair Montreal is shininjj Upon the sno^vy land ; Its stately mansions glowing With hospitable cheer, The merry sleigh-bells ringing Re-echo far and near." HE orif'^inal idea of the Winter Carnival, as suggested hj' a member of the Montreal Club some" years ago, was much simpler than the colossal proportions to which it subsequently attained. However others may have regarded it, it was not tlie wish of the Clubs who were its mainstay that the Carnival be used as a grand "spectacle" to draw a crowd and fill yawning coffers ; but rather that strangers should be welcomed as gues/s to Jo/n hi and enjoy for a sea.son Montreal's charming Winter Sports on the same footing as her own citizens. It is in this spirit, with feelings of genuine, old-time cordiality, that the M.A.A.A. and its "Old Tuque Bletie," with the co-operation of sister organ- izations, extends an invitation to taste the menu now provided ; and if the Centre-piece is lacking — that which in torn ■ banquets With crystal towers and glittering battlement .A pictured castle in the moonlight gleamed, In silver set, a gem of Occident, Like clustered starry jewels brightly beamed" — is hoped that mitch enjoymen*^ and pleasure still be foiuul in the feast. O Winter ! if thy anger Affrights the poor of heart, Best humoured and I'.iost cheery Of playfellows thou art." Now, in thy festal season, We celebrate thy praise ; For our Canadian Carnival Send us auspicious days !
