We have lived much without a due sense of our sin ; without dependence on Christ, and without earnest prayer for thy grace. Blessed be the mercy which has euliguiencd the eyes of our minds, and ena- bled us to discover something of ourselves and of thee, and of 48 PAMILT PRAYERS. the effi'ctual reiuody for otir sin. But altliough we implore thee to pity and to ^>ardon our offences, although our minds and jud^rrnents are in some degree convinced of sin, of the holiness of thv law, of the terrors of thy wrath, and of the riches of thy love, our wills and affections greatly need the reru'wing agency of thy sanctifying grace. O strengthen the things which are ready to die. Increase our love, confirm our faith, enlarge our hopj;, call forth our fear, and as we trust thou hast heirun a good work in us, O perform it until the day of Jesus dhrist. Many are the sins and frailties for which our hearts this night condemn us. Thou, O God, art greater than our hearts, and knovvest all things. Behold, we cast ourselves Ujpon thy mercy ! Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make us r-lean ; extend thy hand of power towards us, and say, in the fulness of that grace which the cross and spirit of Jesus Christ can alone impart, "I will, be thou clean." We praise thee, O our God, for the mercies of the past day. Above all, we bless thee for Jesus Christ, who came to die for us, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God. When we consider our own unworthiness, and all the acts of thy love in providence and grace, we are amazed at thy good- ness, and our ungrateful returns. Lord, what is man, that thou art mindful of him ? and the Son of man that thou visitest him ( Look down, we pray thee, with compassion upon all thy afflicted servants ; grant them the comforts of thy Holy Spirit, and in thine own good time visit and relieve them. Establisli thy kingdom in the hearts of men, make the Gospel successful, to the present holiness and eternal welfare of us all ; and, more particularly, we beg thine abundant blessing upon the Church to which we belong. [Regard with tender compassion the young of this family, may they daily learn the fear of the Lord, and may they ever walk in thy commandments.] Protect us, O Gracious Father, and all for whom we ought to pray, through the dangers of this night. Receive us to thy love, as reconciled sinners in Christ J(!SU8 ; and whether we live, may we live unto thee, or whether we die, may we die unto thee; living or dying, may we be thine, through the mercy of thy blessed Son Jesus Christ, our Saviour. We beseech thee, O Lord, mercifully to incline thine ears to our petitions, and grant that those things we have faithfully asked, according to thy will, may effectually be obtained to the relief of our necessities, and the setting forth of thy glory, through Jesus Christ our Lord. WEDNESDAY MORNING. 49 U8 O Lord God Almighty, we pray thee, now to deliver from all wandering thoughts. Jlelp us to remember in whose presence we are ; and let us worship thee in spirit and in truth. O Lord, our Heavenly Fatluir, who art the preserver of our lives and the giver of all the good things which w(^ enjoy, wo thank thee for the mercies of the past night. We bh'.ss thy that we are here met together in so much health and name, comfort : and that we have now the prospect of passing an- other day in the enjoyment of the bounties of thy i>rovidence; while we have also set before us the blessed hope of everlast- ing life. We beseech thee to give us this day grace to serve thee in our several stations, and to walk according to the Gospel of Jesus Chnst. Save us from the temptations of the day ; Strengthen us for the fulfilment of our duties ; direct us in all our difficulties ; and comfort us under any trouble or adversity, into which we may this day come ; and grant, that, when we lie down at night, we may be able to look back on the hours which shall have passtid, with an humble confidence that thou acceptest our service, and wilt pardon our infirmities, for Jesus Christ's sake. We beseech thee to deliver us from all evil passions, from pride and envy, Irom hatred and ill will, from censoriousness and uncharitableness ; and, especially, from the want of Christ- ian kindness towards those who dwell with us in the same family, and worship thee together, as partakers of the same faith. Preserve us, also, from those secret transgressions which thine eye alone can discern in us. Deliver each of us from the sins which most easily beset us. O Lord, grant that thy good Spirit may this day abide within us ; and dispose us to every good work. And help us also to call often to remembrance the great love of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ ; who came down from heaven to die for us, that we, being delivered from the dread of thy wrath, and rejoicing in the hope of thy mercy, might serve thee, day by day, in newness of life. O Lord, strengthen our faith in him who hath suffered on the cross for us. Teach us to walk according to his example. May we, like him, be kind and compassionate, forbearing and forgiving, holy and harmless, undefiled and separate from sinners. And bless us, not this day only, but to the end of our lives. We pray, that, so long as we remain in this world of trial, thou wouldst strengthen us by thy Holy Spirit, and comfort us, and continually direct us.
