The Solar System consists of the Sun in the centre, the planet Mercury next, then Venus, the Earth and Moow, Mars, four small planets sometimes called Asteroids, Jupiter and his four moons, Saturn with seven, and most distant of all, Herschel with six. Each of these planets, obtains a succession of seasons, completing its year, by revolving around the Sun, and alternate night and day, by revolving on its own axis something like a top. Beyond these, is the region of the stars, which, in treating of the Solar System, may be considered as a vast hollow sphere, with the Sun and planets in its centre. Let it be remembered that the Sun is firmly stationed in the centre of a vast circle, called the earth's orbit. The earth con- tinues to whirl along in this orbit, going entirely round the ^un once every year. It is kept in motion very much as a boy whirls an apple tied to a string around his head ; as the apple cannot fly away from the boy on account of the string, so the Earth cannot fly away from the Sun on ac-' count of the attraction between the two, which operates, as a string to tie the Earth to the Sun and keep it in its orbit. Well ! now imagine the Earth moving around the Sun once every year. But you must recollect that the Earth is also whirling around every 24 hours upon its own axis, and this axis runs north and south. One end of the axis is called the north pole, and points always to the north; the other is called the south pole, and always points to the south. But it so happens, that at one time, this axis in- clines more to the Sun than it does at another. When the north pole is inclined towards the Sun, the rays will fall directly on the nothern portions of the Earth. This will cause summer at the north, and winter at the south. And when the south pole is inclined towards the Sun, it is sum- mer at the south, and winter at the north. Thus the rota- tion of the Sun on its own axis every 24 hours, produces day and night ; and the annual movement of the Earth around the Sun. with the different inclinations of its axis to the Sun, produces the wonderful changes of the seasons. The Moon, by performing a revolution about the EarthJ in a period of little more than 29 days, exhibits to us those appearances from change to full, and from full to change}, denominated phases. She is said to change when she passes between the Earth and the Sun. When in about a varmer'8 almanack. 1837. week after, she is so far from the Sun as to ;«rrive south' as the Sun sets, that is, has 90* or one quarter of the heavens between her and the Sun, she is said to be in' ;quadrature ; when 1 80** distant from the Sun, or in oppo-, sition to him, ihe is said to full, and rises as the Sun sets. iWhen she rises at midnight, she is again in quadrature ;' It is her last quarter. In about a week from her last quar- |ter she will again change, having completed an entire re- volution about the Earth. Instead of something in the regular course of nature, eclipses were once considered as Isupernatural phenomena, and of ominous import, portend-! ing calamity to mankind in some shape or other, but gene-] 'rally, that of pestilence or famine ; while war, rapine and jViolence, were generally charged to the baneful influence, of some malicious comet, whose unwelcome appearance; [tvas generally sufficient to shroud whole nations in terror and dismay. These notions, the consequences of the superstitious ignorance of barbarous or less enlightened ages, are rapid-! ly disappearing before the light of science, and are now, nearly obsolete. When it is considered that the Moon shines only by be-| ing illuminated by the Sun, a little reflection will enable' anyone to understand the cause and nature of eclipses; and it only remains for the Astronomer, by calculations' depending on the motions of the Earth and Moon, to pre-] diet the times on which they will happen — which he can do! with as much certainty and precision as he can foretell the! recurrence of day and night. It is still, to some extent, a prevalent belief, that the; change, full, and quarterings of the Moon have an influ-! ence on the coming state of the weather. If this be thei case, which is very possible, and may, perhaps, be acount-! ed for on rational principles ; yet the subject is at present too litcle understood, or the necessary elements not suf- ficently known, to enable us to calculate with any degree of cei-tainty, what maybe the state of the weather for any period of a future year. I In order to afford some facilities for viewing; the planets?' their times of rising, &.c. are occasionally laid down in the Calendar pages of this Almanack. Those who take an in-j terest in these matters will derive much advantage from, the use of maps of the Stars ; as with their assistance,! 1837. rive south ler of the id to be in ►r in oppo-I i Sun sets. It travels at the rate of 58,000 miles every hour ; which motion, though 120 times swifter than that of a cannon ball, is little more than half as swift as Mercu- ry's motion in his orbit. The Earth's diameter is 7970 miles ; and by turning round its axis every 24 hours from west to east, it causes an apparent diurnal motion -if all |the heavenly bodies from east to west. By this rapid mo- tion of the Earthen its axis, the inhabitants about the equator are carried 1042 miles every hour, whilst those on the parallel of London, are carried only about 58U, besides the 58,000 miles by the annual motion abovf mentioned, which is common to all places whatever. The Earth is round like a globe ; as appears — 1. By its shadow in eclipses of the Moon; which shadow is always bounded by a circular line. — 2. By our seeing the masts of a ship whilst the hull is hid by the convexity of the water. — 3. By its having been sailed round by many navigators. The top of the columns shows the Moon's phases, or the times of new and full Moon, and of the first and last quarter, or two quadratures with the Sun. To find the length of the day, add 12 hours to the time of the Sun's setting, and from the sum subtract the time of rising. When the moon comes to the meridian of any place, or twelve o'clock hour-line, she is then due south with respect to that place, and this is termed the moon's southing. The time of New iMoon's southing is 12 at noon; and from the new to the full moon, the southing is after noon, orsonietiine l)etween noon and mid- night, but every day about 4yniinuU'S later than the former. — The time of the full moon's southing is 12 at midnight ; and from ilhe full to the iipw moon, the southing is in the morning, or some lime between midnight and the noon liext following ; but every day about 4i)m. later than before. The Sun's Declination, at mean noon, is taken from the Nauti- cal Almanack. J8:i7. Phedictions.— The yo»r lH."i7 will bca very eventful one — to every old maid who gets married. j Throughout the whole course of the year whenever the moon wanes the nights will grow dark. I Those who have debts to pay, and no cash, will lose their credit. It is probable that if there is no business doing, people will |complain of hard times, but it is certain that those who hang themselves will escape starving to dealh. j If bishop sleeves go out of fashion, there will be more elbowj room among the ladies. If toques follow, we may perhaps see over their heads. If either of Ihcm should be talked of, there; will be much ado about nothing. I FARMER'S CALENDAR. FOR JANUARY. riMl KKBKUAIlir. Once more, we make our an- nual appearance, with our agri- jcultural axioms, epitomes o( leconomy, maxims of morality, 'precepts of prudence, &c. We '.would hope no fanner will ever rest satisfied until his cattle, sheep and swine are composed 'of the best breeds which can be 'procured. Good breeds of cat- ile cost less lor keeping, and lyield more for protit th.in those ,which have been propagated from the worst of their species. iGive your cows kept for milk the best of food and plenty of it. In addition to plenty of good hay, give them moderate mess- es of carrots, ruta buga, or mangel wurtzel. I Winter is a noisy, bluster- ing, bustling season, tliough in general he keeps himself cool. If you leave a door ajar, he slams it vviiie open and comes Ipuffing in, and blows the news- 'paper into the tire, oversets the clothes-horse, and cuts sun- 'dry other capers of the sort. See that j'our house is tight. Dont leave cracks and holes for the wind to whistle in. Agriculture of late, like many other arts and sciences,' has undergone a great change. | Within a few vuars, the farm- ing interest has been most astonishingly redeemed from the unjust humiliation into which it had sunk. Other em-! })loyments and arts serve for the cmbeUislnnent, but agricul-' ture is necessary for the sup- port of human life. It is not strange that it has been the' business and pleasure of the world in all ages, since without it, civilization ceases and po- pulation fails. It is that oc- cu[)ation to which we are as-! signed by the Almighty Creatorl when he decreed that man| should live by the sweat of his brow. It is agriculture that has caused " the wilderness and the solitary place to be glad.i and the desert to rejoice and blossom as the r()Se.'' Many a man will grow rich this year — in a dream Iftiio incumbent of a fat otRce should die, there will be a dozen feet ready to step into one pair of shoes. If an old miser dies, it will occasion the shedding of many tears — that " live in an onion.'' 1 He who marries during this year will run a great risk — that is, if he does it in a hurry. He who steals a. match, will make tattlers gossip, and get himself into a scrape. He who is pennyless this year will not grieve much at the fall of . 'Hocks. lie who g'ows without growing wiser, will be a long lime com- ing to the years of discretion. . FARMER'S CALENDAR. FOR MARCH. KOU APRIL. i I During this month it is a good time to cut your wood down and get it home. If it is good sledding soniuch the bet- ter. The sap is down now. and the wood cut at this season is much better. Beside, the roots 'in this case will sprout and soon cover the field again. ! Cut, split and pile, a supply of wood so that you may have at least one year's stock before hand. You may use a quantity of green wood in winter for back logs and forcsticks, unless you have stone or iron substi- tues for those articles. But to use green wood in summer for cooking, is as foolish as were the attemj)ts of Dean Swill's projector who undertook to soften marble for making pin- cushions, and to extract sun- beams from cucumbers. Farm- ers during March should be very attentive to their milch cows, and see that they arc Incither stinted nor overfed. jOne that is well fed will keep her flesh and give twice as much milk as two that are put on a short allowance. Industry and economy com bined form the true philoso phers's stone, which turns all into gold. They generally exist together ; and are both so in- dispensably necessary to success in any pursuit of life, that where one is wanting, the other, for all practical purposes, may be ab- sent. You may harrow your winter grain, having previously! sown grass seed upon the land,l and given it a top dressing of| lime or ashes, or a mixture ofi both, put on not less than twoi busiiels of the mixture to thej acre. You may also sow cloverj and other grass seeds with! spring wheat. The grass seedj is best to be ploughed and har-! rowed in with the seed wheat. I Attend to your garden and raise vegetables of all kinds, for the| time in the month you must bej guided partly by the season, and partly by directions to l)e found in the New American Garden- er, which will also tell you the manner of 'preparing the soil, ^'c. It is well worth while for every farncr to buy " Fessen- dcu's Complete Farmer". \ii': Hiv III p i 22 farmer's almanack. 1837 He who wants to borrow money will know the value otit. He who laughs at his own dull jokes, and hunts for a cat %vith three tails, or becomes a candidate for a seat in the House of Assembly, will rival honest Dogberry, and be content to "write himself an ass." There will be more books published this year than will find purchasers ; more rhymes written ihun will lind readers, and more bills made out than will tiiid payers. If a man builds a house this year vvilhout counting the cost, he will know more ut the end of his undertaking than at the begining. If any one jumps oveiboard without knowing how to swim, it is two to one he gets drowned. If any one lends an umbrella, it is ten to one that he is obliged to go home in the rain for his psiins. A poor farmer is In the strict sense of the word, a poor crea- ture : he is a poor husband and a poor citizen ; reverse the pic- iture, and look at the iarm ol the man who is diligent iniiis busi- ^ness, and prudent in his con- .cerns ; what can be presented ^more agreeable ; what can be accompanied with more pleas - |ing ideas 1 His own spirit is in- fused into every thing around him — every thing is in repair, everything is in its place — every thing is in its season — every thing evinces that the master's eye has seen and directed al his concerns. His fields are well arranged and productive ; his crops clean and of the best quality, and secured in season from the weather : his cattle well fed, in good condition, and often better sheltered than the family of the slothful. Enter his dwelling it is the habitation of plenty. His wife in her department, uses the same economy that he practices in his. You may, by this time, form a pretty correct estimate whe ther hay will be scarce next winter, and if you apprehend that such is the case, you will do well to plant or sow Indian corn for fodder. It may be put into the ground forthat purpose, either broad cast or in drills. The former is the Itiast trouble, the latter will give the greatest produce and leave the soil in the best order. If the land on which you propose to raise your corn, l)e mowing land or pasture, fresh ploU}>hed lor that purpose, broad cast sowing will be best, as the sod after being turned over should not be disturbed. If you sow broad cast, from 3 to Sh bushels are recommend ed, though some say that i larger quantity will be still bet ter. If in drills, run light fur- rows about 3 feet asunder 3 or 4 inches deep, and drop the seed corn in the furrows, about as thick as peas are sown for field cultivation. This is what ninty-nine of a hundredj find to be the delights of matrimony. j Early Marriages. — From Early Marriages proceeds the rivalry of parents and children. The son is eager to enjoy the world before the father is willing to forsake it; and there is hardly room at once for two generations. The daughter begins to bloom before the mother can be content to fade; and noilhor ran forbear to wish for the absence of the other. FARMER'S CALENDAR. novi;mi3eh. DF.CEMnL'K. Do not undertake to winter more cattle than you have •abundant means of providing .for. It is recommondcd not to begin to fodder with the poor- est materials. They will, likewise, at any time eat material^ when cut witii a straw cutter, wliich they would refuse if at lull length. You may now carry out and spread soot, ashes, It is quite time to barricade your premises against a ceitain blue-nosed belligerent, called I IJrigadior Boreas, who is mar-; shalling his airy forces, and has issued his orders for a general attuck on these Northern Pro-| vinces.
