STATUTE I. By the Senatk of thk Uxivhrsity of Toronto, Be It enacted ; All previous Statutes of the University arc hereby repenlerl. STATUTE II. OF THK RULES FOR PROCEEDINGS AT MEETINGS OF SENATE. By thk Senate of the University of Toronto, Be It enacted: The following shall be the rules relative to the proceed- ings of the Senate, which rules shall be observed, unless a majority of the whole Senate shall decide for some sufficient cause that it is necessary or expedient to dispense with any portion of them. I. The Senate shall meet annually on the (Thursday Amended by next after the tenth of May, and on the first Thursday in ^*»*- '""'• December), and may continue in Session by adjournment. II. Special Sessions may be called by the Chancellor, or in liis absence, by the Vice-Chancellor. -^ If it H H I I STATUTES OF THK III. The summonses for the Regular Sessions and for Special Sessions, or for the adjourned meetings thereof, shall be sent through the post office to each member; summonses for the Regular Sessions and for Special Ses-' siofls shall be sent at least ten days before the day of meeting, and those for Special Sessions shall specify the business Avhich is to l)e brought forward. IV. No business shall be proceeded with unless there be a quoi-um present within twenty minutes after the appointed time; but the ruembers present may declare the meeting adjourned to another day. V. No business shall be introduced at any Special Session in addition to that specified in the summons. VI. The Summonses shall be issued by the Registrar under the direction of the Ch?;;>^ellor or Vice-Chancellor. VII. At least one day's notice must be given of every motion, except for the suspension of a rule or for adjourn- ment. VIII. No Statute shall be introduced without at least one da}' 's notice, nor shall it be passed at the same meeting at Mhich it has been first read ; but it shall be read a second time, at another meeting, on a subsequent day. IX. At the second reading of a Statute any member may require it to be read clause by clause, and the vote to be taken on each. X. The Order of Proceedings shall be. (1) The Registrar to read the Minutes of the last meeting. (2) Letters received since the last meeting to be read. (3) Notices of intention to introduce Statutes or Motions to be given. (4) Reports of Committees to be read according to priority of appointment. (5) Business remaining since last meeting to be taken up. (6) Drafts of Statutes to be discussed. XI. No member shall speak on any subject more than once, except the introducer of the subject under discussion, who sh^ll be entitled to reply once. Every member, how- ever, shall have the right to explain himself, having first obtained the leave of the Senate, and subject to the direc- tion of the Chair. up. UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO. XII. No member shall speak upon any subject which has not been committed to writing, and moved and seconded, or which he does not intend to make the subject of a motion. XIII. No motion prefaced by a written preamble shall lie received by the Senate.- XIV. Every member while speaking shall address the presiding officer, and the members shall not interrupt the proceedings by conversation. XV. When the question has been entirely put by the presiding officer, no member shall speak upon the subject before voting. XVI. Any member may require the yeas and nays to be entered on the minutes, but no member shall be permitted to enter the grounds of his dissent. XVII. In all unprovided cases, resort shall be had to the rules, usages, and forms of the Legislative Council of Canada. STATUTE III. OF THE CORPORATE SEAL. By the Senate of the University of Toronto, Be it enacted : I. The Seal heretofore used shall continue to be the Seal of the University of Toronto. II. The Seal shall be kept in such place of deposit and: in such charge as the Chancellor shall from time to tiroo direct; and it shall not be affixed to any instruments except in the presence of the Chancellor or Vice-Chancellor, who shall attest such sealing by his signature. ■ »■ Amcndcd liy Stat. The election of Vice-Chaucellor .shall be held on the (Thursday next before Christmas) in each alternate year, except in the special cases hereinafter provided for ; (and the first election under this Statute shall take place on the Thursday next before Christmas, in the year 1858.) (II. The Vice-Chan cellor shall continue in office until the election of his successor.) III. Not less than ten days before the time appointed for the election of Vice-Chancellor, the Registrar shall send by the post to each member of the Senate a notice of the time of such election. IV. Whenever a vacancy shall occur in the office of Vice-Chancellor by death, resignation, or otherwise than by the expiration of the appointed term, the Chancellor shall, without unnecessary delay, direct the Registrar to call a meeting of the Senate, if not then in session, for the election of a Vice-Chancellor for the remainder of the term, giving not less than ten days' notice; or if the Senate be in session at the time any such vacancy occurs, then the Senate shall appoint the day for such election, allowing an interval of not less than ten days; and the Registrar shall give notice thei'eof to ev^ry member accord- ingly. V. The Vice-Chancellor shall perform such duties as may from time to time be assigned to him by the Senate. VI. The salary of the Vice-Chancellor shall be at the rate of (two hundred pounds) per annum. -f ^ UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO. STATUTE V. OF THE SENATE. '^ By THE Senate OF THK University OF Toronto, Be it enacted: Whenever by death, resignation, or otherwise, the num- ber of the members of the Senate shall be reduced below ten, exclusive of the Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor, the Chancellor, or in his absence, the Vice-Chancellor, shall direct the Registrar to call a meeting of the Senate, if not then in session, for the purpose of electing one or more persons as'members of the Senate, exclusive of the Chan- cellor and Vice-Chancellor, giving at least ten days' notice of the meeting and of the object for which it is called ; or if the Senate shall be in session when the number of the members of the Senate is so reduced below ten, then the Senate shall appoint the day for such election, giving at least ten days' notice, and the Registrar shall call the meeting accordingly. , , , . . . STATUTE VI. "V * OF THE SUBORDINATE OFFICERS AND SERVANTS. By THE Senate of the Univer.sity of Toronto, Be it enacted : I. The following officers shall be appointed, viz. : the Registrar, the Bedel, and the Me."?scnger. II. The Registrar shall be appointed by Statute, and shall be removable at pleasure by a like Statute. III. The duties of the Registrar shall be to take charge of the records and papers of the University, and to keep the same properly arranged for convenient reference in such place as shall be appointed by the Cliancellor — ^to keep regular entries, in a form to be approved of by the 8 STATUTES OF THE Chancellor or Vice-Chancellor, of the names of all persons who shall be candidates for Matriculation, Degrees, or Scholarships, Prizes, and Certificates of Honor; of all Examiners who shall from time to time be appointed ; and of all such particuhirs connected with each examination as the Chancellor or Vice-Chancellor shall direct — to con- duct all necessary correspondence under the supervision of the Cliancellor or Vice-Chancellor, and to keep proper records thereof— to attend all Meetings of the Senate, and keep regular Minutes of all the proceedings thereat — to prepare *all Statutes, Resolutions, Reports, or other papers which the Senate may direct, and all copies which may be required of any such documents or papers — to prepare an ' countei-sign all official documents, and generally to discharge such other duties as may be assigned to him by the Senate, or, when the Senate is not in session, by the Chancellor or Vice-Chancellor. IV. The Registrar, before entering upon the duties of his office, shall make and subscribe before the Chancellor or Vice-Chancellor a declaration to the following effect, viz : — " I, A. B., do solemnly declare that I will, to the best of my ability, faithfully discharge the duties of Registrar of the University of Toronto, according to the Statutes of the said University, and the directions to be given to me under . authority thereof, and that I will not directly or indirectly publish or make known any of the proceedings, affairs, or business, of the institution, unless under the authority of the Senate, or upon the requisition of the Visitor, or under compulsion of legal proceedings." V. The Bedel and the Messenger shall be ajipointed by the Chancellor, and shall hold their offices during his pleasure. VI. The Bedel and Messenger shall discharge such duties as are usually discharged by persons holding such offices in similar institutions, and generally shall act under the di- rection of the Senate, the Chancellor, or the Vice-Chancellor. VII. The salary of the Registrar shall be at the rate of £187 10s. per annum. VIII. The value of each Scholarships shall be (thirty j)ound.s) payable at such tiraes as the Senate shall by resolution direct. X. No Student shall hold two Scholarships at the same time, but if two or more Scholarships shall have been awarded him, he shall, (before the declaration of ihe class list, make his election which Scholarship he will hold, or if he be absent, the Vice-Chancellor shall make the election for him, and any Scholarship which is so vacated shall be awarded to the Student, if any, who would next have been entitled to it ; but a Student having obtained more than one Scholarship,) shall be entitled to the sura of ten pounds for each additional Scholarship, and the Scholarshij) which he holds shall be called a double, triple, itc. Scholarship, as the case may be. XI. The Senate shall have power to create additional Scholarships in any special cases, where the results of the examinations shall place two or more of the candidates so nearly equal, as to induce the Examiners to report each of them to be deserving of a Scholarship. Scholars in all the Faculties shall be required to sign a declaration that it is their intention to proceed to a Decree in the University of Toronto, (and Scholars in the Department of Civil Engineering and Agriculture shall sign a declaration that they propose to follow those branches as a profession, and to pursue the study in one of the Col- leges affiliated to the University.) t\ UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO. 21 STATUTE XXI. Silver Medals shall be given to call Students who, at the final examination for the Degrees of LL.B. and M.B., shall have been placed in any position in the first class below the first ; and to all Students who, at the final examination for the Degree of B.A., shall have been placed in any ot the above-named departments in any position in the first class below the first. IV. A Prize in Books of the value of five pounds, shall Amended by be given to each candidate who, at the final examination ' for the degree of B. A., shall have been placed first in (any single branch) in the Natural Sciences. V. IV. The Committee of Management may authorize the Director to obtain such additional assistance as may from time to time appear to them to be necessary. V. The Bursar shall pay all salaries, and the ordinary con- tingent expenses of the Observatory, on the certificate of the Director, who shall lay before theCommittee at the end of each quarter a statement of all such payments authorized by him. . VI All ordinary expenditure upon the buildings, enclo- sures, and approaches to the Observatory, and upon instru- ments, shall be approved of by the Committee, and shall be paid by the Bursar, upon the certificate of the Chairman. VII. The fund out of which the Bursar shall pay the expenses of the Observatory, shall be the annual Parlia- mentary grant, and such other sum as may from time to time be placed at the disposal of the Committee out of the University Income Fund. STATUTE XXVI. OF THE COMMITTEE OF UPPER CANADA COLLEGE. Amended by -Htat. Ixxlii. and by Stat. lii. By the Sekate of the University of Toronto, Be it enacted: I. The Senate shall appoint annually, at the first meeting of the Session in (May,) a Committee for the supervision of Upper Canada College, which shall consist of (three) Mem- bers, any (two) of whom shall form a quorum. It shall be the duty of the Committee to visit the College from time to time, and to offer to the Senate such recommendations as they may deem calculated to benefit the Institution. ' III. The Committee shall have authority to suspend the Principal or any of the Masters ; but they shall communi- cate without delay the facts and grounds of such suspension to the Chancellor, for the information of the Sonate, who shall confirm or remove it a? they see fit. IV. The Committee shall have authority to order and superintend such alterations in the buildings as may from time to time be approved of by the Senate; they shall cause to be put in proper condition, as a play ground, so much of the land lying to the westward of the present lawn as they may deem requisite ; and they shall take such other steps as may be necessary for the purpose of providing for the Pupils the means of exercise and amusement upon the grounds. V. A graduate in the Faculty of Arts in any University in Her Majesty's Dominions, may be permitted to proceed in the Faculties of Law or Medicine in the University of Toronto, without passing the Examination appointed for Matriculants in these Faculties. • VIII. Any person who has been admitted a Barrister by the Law Society of Upper Canada, shall be entitled to offer himself at the Examination for Students of one year's standing in the Faculty of Law without passing the Ex- amination appointed for Matriculants in that Faculty. IX. Any Graduate in the Faculty of Arts in the Univer- sity of Toronto, of three years' standing, being also admitted a Barrister by the Law Society of Upper Canada, or any Master of Arts of seven years' standing in the University of Toronto, or any Barrister of seven years' standing from his admission by said Law Society, may be admitted to the Degree of LL.B., on passing a final Examination to be ap- pointed for that purpose at which Examination no Honors shall be av/arded. X. APPROPRIATING PART OF THE GROUNDS AS A PUBLIC PARK. Whereas, by an Act of the Parliament of Canada, passed in the twenty-second year of Her Majesty's reign, entitled " An Act to authorize the Senate of the University of Toronto to appropriate certain lands for the purposes of a Park, and to include the same within the limits of the City of Toronto, and to extend the Police Regulations of the said City to the University lands adjacent thereto," after reciting that "whereas the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, and Members of the Senate of the University of Toronto, deem it expedient, with a view to the interests of the said Uni- versity, to set apart a certain portion of the lands now vested in Her Majesty on behalf of the said University for the purpose of a Park. And whereas the Mayor, Aldermen, and Commonalty of the City of Toronto have offered to put in order the said Park ; take charge thereof and keep the same in ordei*, in consideration that the same may be ap- propriated as a Public Park to which the Public generally shall have free access. There shall be reserved in and by the base thereof the stone building with the ground immediately around it, as laid down in the said plan and marked " reserved" ; such building lots used by the Senate only for Literary, Scien- tific, or Academical purposes, but may be sanctioned by the City Council upon application of the Senate, and if the Senate resolve at any time to sell the building, the City shall have the right of pre-emption upon condition that the same shall be used for the above purposes only, or may be used for such purposes as may be sanctioned by the Senate upon application by the City Council ; and in case the said buildings should for any reason be removed or pulled down, or be sold to the City of Toronto, then the land so reserved shall be demised to the City, as part of the Park and sub- ject to the said restrictions. Second. Should the Senate hereafter decide upon forming a Botanic Garden within the Grounds so demised for a Park, there shall be reserved the right to occupy that por- tion of the land designated upon the plan " Botanic Garden," for that purpose, such garden to be made and maintained at the expense of the University, and to be open to the Public under such restrictions and conditions as the Senate may impose. Sixth. The roads and ornamental grounds within the Public Park, the lodges connected with the Park, and the approaches thereto shall be put in repair and kept in all necessary repair by the City Council. It shall also be tho duty of the City Council to provide for, and carry into eftect, that proi)er care shall be taken of the same, and that the Avenues shall be sufficiently lighted with gas, and watched by the City Police ; this shall not, however, include the Botanic Garden, should the Senate establish one. Seventh. The City Council shall construct a suitable fence around the Public Park herein mentioned, or such part of it as they may be so required to do by the Senate. Eighth. All the roads, lodges, fences, ifcc, which the City Council is hereby required to construct and put in repair, shall be so constructed or repaired within one year from the date of the lease hereby authorized to be execute!. Ninth. The lease of the said grounds, authorized by this Statute shall contain full and proper covenants, both on the part of the City Council and University of Toronto, for the due performance of the stipulations herein mentioned, and shall also contain proper conditions and provisoes, that the same shall become void in case of refusal or neglect on the part of the City Council to perform the stipulations on their part, and in such case the Bursar may re-enter upon the lands demised. II. WlieveaH, tho French Master in Upper Canada College has sent in his resignation, accompanied by a memorial praying that he may be allowed some compensation on retiring, and the said resignation has been accepted ; And whereas, it is noL expedient that the French Master should hereafter be a permanent Master, accordinj^ to tho provisions of the 27th and 28th Statutes of the University of Toronto. The 9th section of the 27th Statute, and so much of the 3rd section of the 28th Statute as determine the rank of the French Master, are hereby repealed. STATUTE XXXIX. OF FEES IN UPPER CANADA COLLEGE. Whereas, in consequence of the increased expenses from the additional facilities afforded for instruction in Upper Canada College, it is expedient to increase the revenue, By the Senate of the University of Toronto, Be it enacted: ' L The Tuition Fee for one Pupil shall be at the rate of (eight) dollars per term ; if there shall be two Pupils from one family, the fee shall be at the rate of (seven) dollars each per term ; if there shall be three Pupils from one family, the fees shall be at the rate of (six) dollars each per term ; (if there shall be four Pupils from one family, the fee shall be at the rate of five dollars each per terra.) 1 \ UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO. 39 II. AMENDING THE STATUTE OF SCHOLARSHIPS By the Senate of the University of Toronto, Be it enacted: The 10th Section of the 20th Statute, intituled " Of Scholarships," is amended as follows : — No Student shall hold two Scholarships at the same time; but if two or more Scholarships shall have been awarded to him, he shall be entitled to receive the sum of ten pounds for each additional Scholarship and the Scholarship he holds shall be called a double, triple, &c.. Scholarship, as the case may be. The Senate may award the remainder of the value of any such Scholarship to the Student who would next have been entitled to it; but there shall in no case be awarded any more than one Scholarship in any Department in addition to those specially provided by this Statute. III. From and after the first of January there shall be only two Classical Masters and two Junior English Masters. IV. A reduction of one-sixth shixll be made on all the higher salaries now payable to Masters in Upper Canada College, viz. : upon the salaries of the Principal, of the Classical and Mathematical Masters, and of tne English Classical Master. A reduction of one-eighth shall be made upon all the lower salaries payable to Masters in Upper Canada College, viz.: upon the salaries of the Junior English Master and of the French Master. V. The Committee on Upper Canada College may authorize the Principal to employ an occasional Master to assist in teaching tne lower forms, at a salary of four hundred dollars ; out such occasional Master shall not be entitled to a share of the fees. , VI. The Senate may, by resolution, grant a gratuity to the Masters whose salaries have been reduced by the fourth section of this Statute, if in any year the income of the College will permit of it ; provided, that such gratuities shall be proportional to the reduction thereby made. •i. AMENDING THE STATUTE OF "EXAMINERS AND EXAMINATIONS." :; By the Sexate of the Universiti of Toronto, Be it enacted: . . I. The second section of the Statute XIV., intituled " Of Examiners and Examinations," is repealed. II. The reiuuncration of the Examiners for their services shall be proportional to the number of papers which they have to report upon, according to the following scale : — The minimum remuneration shall be twenty dollars. If the number of papers exceeds fifty, the remuneration shall be forty dollars. If the number of papers exceeds one hundred, the remu- neiation shall be sixty dollars. If the number of papers exceeds two liundred, the remuneration shall be eighty dollars. HI. It shall be the duty of the Registrar, after every examination, to prepare a statement of the number of papers reported upon by the Examiners in each depart- ment, by adding together the number of candidates who have appeared at each of the divisions of which such Examiners have conducted the examination, which he shall submit to the Vice-Chancellor; and the Vice-Chancellor shall thereupon certify to the Bursar the amount payable to each Examiner. IV. The Vice-Chancellor may, in addition to the sum as ascertained by the above section, certify as payable to any Examiner not resident within ten miles of Toronto, five dollars for every day that such Examiner has been neces- sarily' absent from home in attending the Examinati^i. .i , ■ 1 52 STATUTES OF THE I i STATUTE LXIII. OF THE PRINCE'S PRIZE. Whereas, His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, upon the occasion of his recent visit to Canada, was graciously pleased to present to the University of Toronto the sum of two hundred pounds for the purpose of establishing a prize in commemoration of His Royal Highness's visit : — By the Senate of the University of Tokonto, Be it enacted : ... :'\ I. The sum of two hundred pounds, presented by His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, shall be invested by the Bursar in such securities as the other funds of the University are authorized to be invested in ; and the said sum and the interest accruing thereon, shall be kept by him as a separate fund. II. The sum of forty-eight dollars, or such smaller sum as may bo realized as interest on the investment, shall be annually appropriated for a prize, which shall be called the " Prince's Prize," and shall consist of an Inkstand of such pattern, and bearing such device as shall be determined upon by a Committee appointed for that purpose. III. The Prince's Prize shall be awarded annually to the Candidate for the Degree of B. A., who having been classed in Honors in at least two departments, and in the first class in at least one department, shall have obtained the highest aggregate number of marks in all the subjects which are appointed for the Examination of Candidates for the Degree of B. This Committee shall also supervise and manage all matters of a financial character within the control of the Senate in Council. II. That the said Committee of the Senate shall consist of the Chancellor, the Vice-Chancellor, and one member of the Senate, to be annually elected on the first Thursday after the first Tuesday in October in each year, and subject to the Statutes and directions of the Senate, shall have supervision and control of that portion of the expenditure which is to be borne by the University ; and such Com- mittee shall make reports +o th' Senate relative to the same once in every three months at least. III. That two shall form a quorum of the Committee of the Senate, and three a quorum of the Joint Committee, of which at least one shall be the Vice-Chancellor or elected member. IV. IV. The Ui)per Canada Colle^'o Boarding-house Fees, and all other receipts applicable to it and the expenses, shall bo charged against it in the following order of precedence : — 1. The ordinary expenses of maintenanci.', including repairs and improvements in the building. 2. Tho allowance to the Superintendent, by resolution of the Senate, of three dollars per term for each pupil resident in the Boarding-house. 3. Any sum which the Committee of Upper Canada College may think it advisable to reserve to meet repairs or improvements in the Boarding-house, which, in their opinion, will be required. 4. The payment to the credit of the Upper Canada College Income Appropriation of such a sum for each pupil resident in the Boarding-house as shall -inke up the five dollars per term, which is now chargeu to the amount per term which each would have paid had they not been resident in the Boarding-house. Provided always, that if at any time no balance of salary shall be due to any Master in Upper Canada College from the suspense account ordered to be kept by tiie order in Council of December 21st, 18Go; and that there shall be sufficient funds at the credit of the Income Appropriation Account to pay the Masters in the College their full salaries for that year at the rates established before 18G0, then no payment shall be made for that year from the Boarding-house, as above provided, or only so much as shall enable the Income Approi)riation to pay the above ciiarges. 5. Ail salaries of Masters, as at present established, with the ordinary expenses of maintenance, repairs, &c., as provided by the Order in Council of December 21st, 18G5. 2. The repayment of any deductions from salaries, in accordance with the Order in Council of December 21st, 1866. 3. Any sum which the Committee on Upper Canada College may think it advis?ibie to reserve to meet the expenses of necessary repairs or improvements. 4. An apportionment amongst the Masters, in propor- tions in which their salaries were reduced by the Statute of Fees and Salaries in Upj^or Canada College, passed October 5th, 1860, so far as to make their salaries for tlie then current year equal to what tlicy were in 1860. The above-named charges, numbered 2, 3, and 4, shall only be paid or reserved (as the case may be) to tlie extent that there may be a balance in the year's accounts available to meet them, and no part of such charge remaining unpaid shall be considered a debt chargeable against the income of the following year; and any balance which may remain after these charges shall have been paid in full, shall be carried forward to the credit ^f the appro- priation for the following year. ■ ^ VI. Translation into Latin Prose. Mathematics. Algebra to Quadratic Equations (inclusive). Euclid, Books III. and IV. (Colenso's, Pott's, or Todhunter's. French. Any Candidate who, at any time during the year 1868-1869, may present a certificate from the Registrar of the General Medical Council of his having duly passed the Matriculation Examination prescribed by the Medical Act, may, in the discretion of the Senate, be admitted a Matriculant in the Faculty of Medicine, on payment of the usual fee, without further examination. III. Botany shall be an additional subject for the Primary Examination, and also for the degree of Bachelor of Medicine, and a three months' attendance upon lectures on this subject .shall be necessary. IV. Attendance upon lectures for a period of at least three sessions of six months each, shall be one of the requisites for the degree of Bachelor of Medicine. V. This Sta,tute shall come into eft'ect forthwith, and any provisions in former Statutes inconsistent with the fore- going are repealed. STATUTE LXXXI. RESPECTING THE LIBRARY. OF STARR MEDALS. By the Senate op the University op Toronto, Be it enacted : That, in place of the present })rovision, that there shall be three Starr gold Medal?, the following shall bo substituted, viz. : " That there shall be one Starr gold medal of the value of thirty-two dollars, and two silver of the value of six dollars, to be called respectively the first and second Starr Medal, and that all candidates for medals shall be required to take all the subjects for honours, as specified in the Statute on Medals. STATUTE LXXXIII. RESPECTING EXHIBITIONS IN UPPER CANADA COLLEGE. By tub Senate of the University of Toronto, Be it enacted : . That section 31 of the existing Statute be repealed, and the following be substituted therefor : — All such Exhibitions sh?ll be open for competition to the whole Province, and shall be awarded after a public Examination to be held at the end of the summer term. They shall be tenable for one year by pupils attending regularly at Upper Canada College, or at any of the Grammar Schools of the Province of Ontario; but the Exhibitioners of one year may compete for the Exhibitions of succeeding years. Competitors in the subjects forming the Annual Course of the Fourth Form shall not exceed seventeen years of age at the end of the Summer Term, June 30th. 70 STATUTES OK THK STATUTE LXXXIV. STATUTE LXXXV. RESPf:CTING THE UPPER CANADA COLLEGE BOARDING HOUSE. By the Senate of the University of Toronio, Be it enacted : That in consequence of the overcrowding of the Upper Canada College Boarding-house, and the number of appli- cations for residence which are necessarily declined, it is expedient to authorize the enlargement of the Boarding- house, so as to contain from forty to fifty additional residing pupils ; and it is hereby enacted, that the expenditure attending the said erection shall be charged upon and paid out of the Permanent Fund of Upper Canada College, to be redeemed by any surplus that may exist from time to time in the same fund. And that such expenditure shall not exceed for the said erection, and in respect of providing the requisite household and other furniture therefor, the sum of eight thousand dollars.
