I <»i t The Publishers have much pleasure iu submitting herewith the fifth eJitiou of their British Ooluinbin Gnzetteer and Directory. The vohiuie this year is divided into six parts, viz: -fl) Mining Companies doiug business in British Co- lumbia; (2) Incorporated ConipanioB; (3^ a Gazetteer Index showing the names of all places in each Electoral District; (4) (iazetteer and Directory of all cities, towns, villages, post-offices, mining camps and steamboat landings; (5) Complete Street and Alphabetical Directories of the Cities of Vancouver and Victoria; and (6) Classified Business Directory. The compiling Hud publishing of Directories is our exclusive buhiness. We have a complete plant and every facility for turning out a first-claws wo. k. The principal work pertaining to our Directories is done by men trained to the work, and who are all engaged in it the year round. Great care has l)eeu taken iu re- vising the work, to ensure exactness as well as completeness, and we trust it will meet with the approbation of our subscribers. The Gazettw wectinn has been considerably increased by the addition of the names of principal residents in our lists of country towns. The Cities and the principal towns have been carefully revised and the information brought down lo a late date and will be found to be very complete. The Directory of Mining Companies is the only work that shows the names of all the Mining and Development Companies doing business in this Province . The feature was a popular one last year, and great care has been taken in its re- vision and in the addition of new matter of which there is some thirty per cent. Attention is directed to the fact that in the Gazeti.eer all places are found in their proper alphabetical order. The present addition gives desc-iptions of 817 places, last year there were7.'>3 places. The lists of places by districts will be found a great convenience when used in connection with the (Jazetteer. For convenience of reference, Kub-heada show the first and last names on each page of the City Directories, and the first ii nd last places contained on the pages of the Gazetteer. The preparation of Dirpctories, perhaps as vividly as anything else, impresses the compiler with a sensn of the progress of the country in all that constitutes material prosperity. Vanconver during the past year has made more rapid progress than at any former period of itw existence. The new names added to the Directory indicate that the City has had an addition of over five thousand to its permanent populuiioii within a year and has now the largest population of any city in the province. The Victoria City Directory also shows a very satis- factory increase over last year. The cities of the Kootenay District are fast settling down to a permanent basis, the transitory element having moved on. To make a Directory absolutely correct is impossible; but we lielieve that this Tolnme is as nearly correct as it is possible to make it with the rapidly changing population of a mining country. To our many kind friends who have revised proofs, and without whose assis- tance it would have been impossible to secure reliable information, we take this opportunity of returning our sincere thanks. It is our intention to publish this work annually, corrected and revised to date of publication, keepin.; up with the rapid developmeut of the country. Thanking our patrons for their encouragement, courtesy and liberal support, our endeavor will be to merit a continuation of their favor. BespectfuUy, HEXDERSON PUBLISHING COMPANY, LTD. LTY.
