The Constituent Members, in order to make their intentions beneficial to themselves, and others who might aftewards be admitted into the Society, framed sundry Rules and Regulations for the government thereof ; reserving to themselves, and the Society at large, the power to add to, or alter the same, as times and circumstances should render it necessary. The Society therefore, v.'ith the consent of the Members at large, have, at different periods since that time, made such additions to and alterations on these Rules and Regulations as to them appeared necessary. And having now resolved to reprint the whole, including all the additions and alterations that have been made, from the original constitution of the society down to this time ; thoy hereby declare their former Rules and Regula- tions, as heretofore printed to be from this date null and void ; the strength and general import of them being contained in those following, which are henceforth declared to be binding upon the Members of this Society, until such time as the same may necessarily and constitutionally be altered, it being unders- tood to be in the power of the Society at large to make further alteration thereon. I I RULES AND REGULATIONS, &c. T. That on no coniTiton shall any but Scotchman, or the Sons of Members he admitted ; and that only under the following iiqes and conditions, viz : from 18 to 45 years of age, on paying tTen Shillings currency, entrance money ; and from 45 to 55 years of age on paying the same entrance money and the monthly assessments herein after provided for the period they may be above the age of 45 years. n. That any ])erson proposed to become a Member must be recommended at a General Meeting by a Member of the Society, when his character will be investigated, and he cannot be elected but by a majority of votes ; and when duly elected his name must remain three years on the books of the Society before he can claim oi derive any benefit therefrom. III. Thft the benefits of this Society will be confined to Members only. Any person subject to any hereditary disease cannot under any consideration be admitted. r IV. That for the management of this Society, there shall bo a Committee of twelve Members, whose duty it shall be to take A general account of all monies and matters, with this exception, that no member can be admitted except at a general meeting of the Society; and that no law can be erased, or any new law made except at a general meeting, specially called for that purpose : but in all other respects the Committee shail have the entire and absolute management of all affairs appertaining to the Society, and are at liberty to call meetings of the members when they may deem it necessary. V. That the Committee of Management shall consist of a President, Vice-President, Treasurer, Secretary, and eight managing Members, who are to be elected annually j the elec- tion to take place on the First Tuesday of the month of Novem- ber in each vear. 6 I The Secretary il to give a week's notice of every ineetinj^ that is to take pla e for the election of OfHce Bearers. Mem- bers elected refusing to serve will be subjected to pay a fine of (ive shillings, currency, each ; they are to notify their decision to the Secretary within a week. All fines must be paid at the first regular meeting after the election, — defaulters will be struck )ff the Books of the Society. VI. That there sliall be a General Meeting of the members of this Society, on the First Tuesday of every month, at which overy member shall be assessed one shilling and three pence, currency, for the benefit of the funds of the Society. That all iiembers residing in the city not paying, or neglecting to send their assessments in the course of six months, shall be fined six pence, and for every subsequent month, three pence ; and if they do not pay their full amount of assessments and fines before the expiration of twelve months they shall be struck off the Hooks of the Society, ana shall be no longer members of the Society. Members residing in the country falling in arrears in the payment of their assessments and fines shall only be fined six i)ence for any time over six or under twelve months, but if they do not pay before the expiration of twelve months, they shall be treated as above expressed quoad members residing in the city of Quebec. VII. That any membor allowing his name to be erased from the Books of the Society, shall, ifhe wishes to rejoin, only he admitted on paying the usual entrance money, and remaining throe yeais on the Books as formerly. VIII. That any one who has been a member of tliis Society for three years and should die at the expiration of that time, or it any future period while his name remains on the books as a member, his widow, or if not married, his nearest relations, shall be paid, outof the funds of the Society, Five Pounds, currency, for the purpose of defraying the expenses of his funeral; if he has no relations, in the neighbourhood, then the management of the burial shall be taken by the Office Bearers of the Society, who shall expend the above sum thereon, after deducting his arrears to the Society, if any be due. IX. That if any member's wife should die after his becoming a benefit member he shall be paid the sum of Three Pounds, currency, for the purpose of defraying the expenses of her ^ IS, but if or luneral ; or if he should dio first, thon at the time of his wife's decease (provided she remain the widow of such moniber) her relations shall be paid the money. Shopld any mciuher marry a second time, during the period of his bonofit momboiship, nu allowance for his second wile will be made, provided the allow- ance has been paid for the first wife of sucii member. X. Every member havin^j paid his contributions for and during the space of three years, who shall be incapacitated to follow his profession, trade or oidinary occuhatioii, pillioi on account of sickness, lameness, blindness or oti'icr infirniity wliatsoevct, shall be paid Ten Shillings, currency, per week, for and during; the first twelve successive weeks of the time he may be so incapacitated, andUve .Shilling, currency, per week so lonp; as he shall remain so incapacitattnl after dc'.iiictini; his montlih' assessments, and such arrears as may bo due l.v him to the Society, XI. The Office Bearers of the Soolely will, on the evening of their election, make choice out of their number of eight mem- bers to visit sick benefit members. Should the Oirico Bearers require it, the member claiming the aliment will be f'ound to forward a Doctor's certificate, stating the nature of the illness, and should it appear that the same was caused by any ict of his own, his name will be erased from the Books of the Society, and hewill bo held unworthy of ever beingre-admitted. XIII. That any member of the Society who knows another member to be ailing shall forthwith acquaint one of the Office Hearers for the time bei.ig, who will inform the President, who IS enjoined to order the visiting Office Bearers to visit such member, and pay him his aliment, or report him to the Office Hearers, as the case may be. XIV. That when this Society is met for the purpose of t^lectmg Office Bearers for the ensuing year, the Secretary shall call over the names of the twelve Office Bearers elected, who are to answer to their names and remain standing in order that the members may have an opportunity of seeing and knowing them by their names; the twelve persons elected to serve as Office Bearers shall then retire, and choose a President and Vice- l^esident from amongst the twelve, after this they are to name the other Office Bearers, and in case of equality of votes, the President is to have the casting vote. If the persons chosen to ict as Office Bearers should refuse to accept of their ofFiccs, they shall be obliged to pay the sum of five shillings, currency, each, the said fine to be immediately paid, or at the next re.o-ular meeting of the members, and the late Office Bearers shall continue in their offices until the first regular meeting of the members after the election ; and other Office Bearers shall be elected at the next monthly meeting to fill up the vacancies of such of the Office Bearers as may have resigned or declined accepting office ; it being understood and ex'pressly declared that no member shall be entitled to vote at any of such elections or he eligible as an Office Bearer if he shall stand in arrears to to the Society. the ^ XV. That the Treasurer's duly shall be to receive all debts due to the Society, and to pay all disbursements by the direc- tions ot the other Orlice Bearers or atijreably to the articles ..f the Society, and the Secretary shall keep an account thereof ; and on the evening of every election the Treasurer shall b»! obliged to settle all his accounts with regard ti the Society, and shall transfer or tleliver over to his successor in ollice kU monies bills or other effects whatsoever belonging to the Society. ^ XVII. That the box belonging to the Society with two out- side locks and keys (and a small inside drawer, with a lock and key, in which are and shall bo deposited all monies or bills belonging to the Society, excepting what monies are ordered !> be deposited in Bank) shall contain the Books and other writings, occ., of the Society. Xyill. The Ollice Bearers shall select two of their number to whom the outside keys of the box sliall be confided ; and th.- Ireasurershall have the custody of the key of the insidi- drawer, containing the monies and bills bclongin'>- to th- oociety. ° X'lX. That the money when collected for the use of the society shall be deposited in Bank or otherwise as the Society may direct, excepting such a sum as the Office Bearers maV tliink proper to leave in the hands of tiie Treasurer for necessary uses, which sum is not to exceed £10, currency ; the box is not to be opened except in the presence of four acting Office Bearers each member acting in the contrary shall foifeit the sum of two sliillings and six pence, currency, for each such contravention. Any money lent by the Society shall be on proper and good security, at least two sufficient securities for each sum, and no member shall be taken as security for another member ; all bills and bonds to be drawn and accepted payable one day after date, and to be made payable to the Tiensurci for the time bein", who 10 shall endorse or transfer the same (without recourse) to his succe^isor in office when and so soon a^ he may resign or « other may be elected in his stead. ^ ^ ' "' ^"" XX.
