Scripture fading and Meditations on Wisdom. Doth not Wisdom cry ? And understanding put forth her voice ? She standeth in the top of high places by the way in the places of the paths. She crieth at the gates, at the entry of the city, at the coming in at the doors : Unto you, oh men, I call, and my voice is to the sons of man. Oh ye simple, understand wisdom ; And ye fools, be ye of an understanding heart. Prov, 8, 1 -5. Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God hath shined. Psalm 50, 2. How much better is it to get wisdom than gold ? And to gcc understanding rather to be chosen than silver. Prov. 1G, KJ. He hath made the earth by His power, he hath established the world by his Wisdom, and hath stretched out the Heavens by His discretion. When He uttereth His voice, there is a multitude of waters — 4 — in the Heavens, and He causeth the vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth; He maketh lightenings with rain, and bringeth forth the wind out of Hi treasures. Jeremiah 10. 12-13. God came from Teman, and th?! Holy One from Mount Paran. Selah. His glory covered the Heav- ens and the earth was full of His praise. And His brightness was as the light: He had horns coming out of his hand : And there was the hiding of His Power. Before Him went the pestilence, an-51. Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God : How unsearchable are his judgements and his ways past finding out ; For who hath known the mind of the Lord ? Or who hath been His councellor ? For of Him, and through Him, and to Him, are all things: To whom be glory forever. Amen. Romans 1 1, .33 30. To God only wise, be glory through Jesus Christ forever. Amen. Ro.Tians IG, 27. But wisdom is Justi'Ced of her children. Where is the Wise ? Where is the Scribe ? Where is the disputer of the world ? Hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world ? For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preach- ing to save them that belie v'e. For the Jews require a sign and the Greeks seek after Wisdom : But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumbling block, and unto the Greeks foolishness, but unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, (Jh -ist the _ 6 — power of God, and the Wisdom of God. Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men ; And the weakness of God is stronger than men. For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called. But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; And God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty ; And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chos- en, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: That no flesh shall glory in His presence; But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and saactiflcation, and redemption ; That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord 1 Cor. 1, 20-31. And they that be wise shall shine as the brigl.t- ness of *he firmament ; and they that turn many to righteo.-jness as the stars for ever and ever. Daniel 12, 3. Many shall be purified, and made white, and tried ; but the wicked shall do wickedly : and none of the wicked shall undei-stand ; but the wise shall understand. Daniel 12, 10. Ephraim shall say, what have I to do any more — 7 — with idols ? I have heard Him, and observed Him : I am lik a green fir tree. From me is thy fruit found. Who is wise, and he shall ufidjrstand these things ? prudent, and he shall know them ? for the ways of the Lord are r.jht, and the just shall walk in them : HosEA U, 8-9- but the transgreasors shall fall therein. Beh iii, a whirlwind of the Lord g< - forth with fury, a continuing w^hirlwind : it shall ' ' with pain upon the head of the wicked. The fierce anger of the Lord shall not return until He have done it, and until He have performed the intents of His heart : in the latter days ye shall consider it perfectly. Jkkemiah 2.S, 19-20. That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith ; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, d height; and to know the love of Christ, which asseth knowledge, that ye might be tilled with all ihe fulness of God. Now unto Him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, unto Him be glory in the Church by Christ Jesus through all ages, world without end- Amen. Ephes. :J,17-iil. In whom are hid all the ticasu'es of wisdom and knowledge. Col. 2, 3. J -'jti — 8 — Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time. Col. 4, 5. To the law and to the testimony, if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them. Isaiah 8. 20. The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light : they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined. Isiah 9, 2. In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by Him, and without him was not anything made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light sbineth in darkness and the darkness comprehended it net- There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. The same came for a witness to bear witness of the Light that all men through Him might believe. He was not that light but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That was the true Light which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world and the world was made by Him and the world knew him not. He came unto His own and His own received Him not. But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name : Which — 9 — were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld His glory, the Glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. John bare witness of Him, and cried, saying, This was He of whom I .spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me : for he was before me. And of His fulness have all we received, and grace for grace. For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. No man hath seen God at any time ; the only begotten son which is in the bosom of the Father, He hath declared Him. John 1, 1-lS. And no man hath a-scended up to Heaven but He that came down from Heaven even the Son of Alan which is in Heaven. And as Moses lifted up the vSerpent in the wilderness, even so mu.st the Son of Man be lilted up. That whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. Luke 3 13-17. For God so loved the world, that He gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the wo/ Id, but that the world through Him might be saved. He that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of — 10 — m God, and this is the condemnation that light is come into the world and men loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest their deeds should be reproved. But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may become manifest that they are wrought in God' John 3, 13-31. O that they were wise, that they understood this,^ that they would consider their latter end. Deut. 32, 20. One generation passeth away and another gen- eration cometh but the earth abideth f orev er. The sun also ariseth and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose. The wind goeth towards the South, and turneth about unto the North, it whirl- eth about continually and the wind returneth again according to his circuits. All the rivers run into the sea yet the sea is not full, unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again. All things are full of labor. Man cannot utter it, the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing. The thing that hath been it is. That which shall be and that which is done is that which shall be done and there is no new thing under the sun. Is there anything whereof it may be said. See this is new it hath been already of old time, which war, before us. There is no remembrance of things that are to come — 11 — with those that shall come after. Ecclesiastes 1, 4, 11. Wisdom excelleth folly as far as light excelleth I darkness. Wisdom is good with an inheritance and by it there is profit to them that see the sun. For wisdom is a defence, and money is a defence, but the excell- ency of knowledge is that wisdom giveth life to them that have it. Ecclesiastes 7, 11-12. What a wonderful world made for man to live in. Man cannot comprehend the wisdom, and skill, and love of an all wise Creator, benifactor and pre- server. How strange that man rebelled against God, who did everything for him. Paul said if meat make my brother to offend, I will eat no meat while the word standeth lest I make my brother to offend. Enoch walked with God How blest with fellowship Divine, And saved through faith from sin and death Through endless years to shine. How we should live and fear, And reverence, and obey Our God who gives us all, And keeps us every day. — 12 — Noah walked with God, Just and perfect in his race : And moved in holy fear, And in His eyes found grace. Abraham believed in God and it was counted unto him for riorhteousness. Romans 4, 3. He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief but was strong in faith, giving glory to God. Romans 4, 20. How sweet to meditate At the close of day, To lay aside all worldly cares, And watch and praise and pray. Jacob and Esau grew apart, In deed and thought and word, Esau wandered far away, And Jacob served the Lord. Jacob received his father's blessing, It grieved Esau sore. For then he sought to slay him. And hated all the more. Joseph grew in faith and hope, When all seemed dark and drear. At last a ruler in the land, He saved his kindred dear. -i — 13 — Hid in the ark of bulrushes from his enemies, a child 'of God and part of His great plan, Pharo's. daughter found him and he wept. There was a way of deliverance made and she had compassion on him and said, " this is one of the Hebrew children." Then said his sister to^ Pharo's daughter : " Shall I go and call to thee a nurse of the Hebrew woman, that she may nurse the child ^or t!iee ? " And Pharo's daughter said to her : " Go." And the maid went and called the child's mother, and Pharo's daughter said unto her : " Take thi.s child away and nurse it for me, and I will give thee thy wages. And the women took the child and nursed it. And the child grew, and she brought him unto Pharo's daughter, and he became her son. And she called him Moses, and she said thi.s becau.se she drew him out of the water. ExoDUS 2, (i-lo. And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians and was mighty in words and deeds. And when he was fully forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brethern the children of Israel. And seeing one of them suffer wrong, he defended him and avenged him that was oppressed, ai «le in the Lord and that the myst- ery that the Gentiles should be saved was made known to Paul by revelation. He exhorts them to unity and to be followers of God and shows them the complete armor of the Christian. In the Epistle of Paul the Apostle to the Philip- pians. He testified his thankfulness to God and his love toward them for the fruits of their faith and fellowship of His suffering, and tells them of their perseverance to the end, and how he is to glorify Christ either by His life or death. He exhorts them to follow the example of Christ and to beware of false teachers and tells them how he rejoiced in their love for Him. In Colossians, we read of the care Paul had for the church at Colosse How thankful he was when he heard of th'ir faith. He exhorted them to be con- stant in Christ and to oware of philosophy and vain traditions worshiping of angels and legal ceremonies which are ended in Christ, and showed them where to seek Christ and mortify the deeds of the body, to put off the old man and to put on Christ. Exhorted them to humility, charity and several other duties, to be fer- vent in prayer and to walk wisely toward them that are not yet come to the true knowledge of Christ. — 22 — He saluted them and wished them prosperity. The Apostle in his Epistle to the Thessalonians, tells them of his being persuaded of their sincerity and conver- sion to God, of His care and love for them. He gave them a description of the second coming of Christ and gave them divers duties and comforts them against persecutions. He tells them that there shall be a fall- ing away from the faith, and a discovery of antichrist- He craved their prayers for himself and testfied his confidence in them, gave them divers precepts to shun idleness and bad company and concluded with prayer and salutation. Paul in his Epistle to Timothy put him in mind of the charge that was given him when he went to Macedonia. He tells him of the right use of the law, and speaks of the mercy shown to himself and of his call to preach the Gospel, and that it is meet to pray» and give thanks for all men. He tells him how women should be attired and that they are not permitted to teach and tells him the qualiCcations of Bishops and Deacons and speaks of the great mystery of godliness. He fortells a departure from the faith and gives him precepts and rules for widows and elders and for Tim- othy's health and tells him of the duty of servants, and whereof to admonish the rich and speaks of the faith that was in Timothy's Grandmother Lois, and in his mother Eunice, and in Timothy himself. He — 23 — advises him to stir up the gift of God which was in him, to be steadfast and patient in persecution, lo per- sist in the form and truth of that doctrine which he had learned of him. He exhorts him again saying: '* Thou therefore my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus." In the 2nd chapter and 19th verse. Nevertheless, the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal. The Lord knoweth them that are His. And let everyone that nameth the name of Christ, depart from iniquity. And how the servant of God ought to behave himself and tells him in the last days of perilous times shall come and describeth the enemies of the Truth, and shows him his own ex- ample and commends the Holy Scriptures. He ex- horted him to duty, with all care and diligence. He tells him of his own death, asking him to come to him and to take Mark with him and tells him what befeH him at the beginning of his ministry and telling of his faith gives salutations and concludeth. Paul in his Epistle to Titus begins with : Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God's elect, and the acknowledging of the Truth, which is after Godliness. He says, " 1 thank my God, making mention of thee always in my prayers," and in the 7ih verse. For we have great joy and consolation in *hj love, because the bowels of the saints are refresh- ed by the brother. He tells of his great love for One- aimns, his son in the faith and asks Philemon to rec- «ve him as he would Paul himself. 2.'5 The Kpistle of I'atil tho Apostlr, to tlir Hebrews, tells how the Law was fulfilled in Jesus ( !hrist. The General Epistle of Jude exhorts to be con- stant in the faith and tells of the false teachers trying to reduce them, and tells of the punishment of false teachers. In the twentieth verse, we read : " But ytv beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holly Ghost. Keep yourselves- in the love of God, looking for the meicy of our Lord Jesus Christ, unto Eternal Life. And of some have compassion, making a difference: and others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire ; hating even, the garment spotted by the tic^h. And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace. James 3, 18. " And gave Solomon wisdom and understanding exceeding much ami largeness of heart, even as the sand that is on the »ea shore. And Salomon's wisdom excelled the wisdom of all the children of the east country, and all the wisdom of Egypt. For he was wiser than all men than Ethan the Ezrahite and He- man, and Chalcol, and Darda the sons of Mahol, and his fame was in all nations round about. And he spake three thousand proverbs, and hi.s songs Were a thousand and five. If sinners would think what they are doing and think of thp Eternity that awaits them. If Christians will think of the glory that awaits them, and of the home they are hastening to, of the welcome awaiting them, they might well shout for joy, God keeps a just account of all we do, and it is what we are doing that will be recorded. If we are doing right in the sight of God, it is well with us. God is love. I JohN[4, 8. Happiness is the result of loving God, and doing His will.
