 broadly loundod, Kroatcat width a little below the middle ; both valvei 
 rather strongly and uniformly convex, mo«t tumid at about one third the 
 length from the beak. Ventral valve more acuto alwvo than the dorsal, 
 beak deprousod below the greatest elevation of the shell, slightly elevated 
 above the margin, with a small area be^ath it which is inclined backward 
 at ait angle which varies from 46" to 60*. Dorsal valve witli an obtiuioly 
 rounded umbo, the beak scarcely distinct from tlio oanlinal edge and not 
 elevated above the marj^. Sttrfaqe with fine cowentrio striae or snaall 
 nunutoly rugose ridges of growUi of variable size, from 4 to 8 in one line, 
 often smooth from exfoliation, or wearing. Colour of the shell in the red- 
 dish limestone a honey yellow, in grey limestone greyish ; when exposed, 
 to the weather becomes white and minutely fibrous. 
 Length and breadth about three lines. 
 
 In some specimens the' ventral valve is depressed convex, the beak 
 being on a level with the greatest elevation of the shell. The shell is 
 thick and strong, and when well preserved breaks with a granular fracture. 
 When weathered, a tendency to fibrous exfoliation is manifested. 
 
 This species is closely allied to the form that is found so abundantly in 
 the Troy limestone, but the muscular impressions in that one are rather 
 closer together and nearer the beak. (At least they are so in the speci- 
 mens in my possesaon.) , ir.i. 
 
 Many of the specimens ar« a little more obtuse m the upper half than 
 jthose figured. The individualfl are exceedingly numerous and differ Uttle

 Both valves show lon^tudinal undulations radiating firom the beak to 
 the margin. . 
 
 This species closely resembles some of the ordinary forms of the genns, 
 but differs internally firom any known to me in the Second Fauna in the 
 absence of the dental pUtes, no traces of which can be perceived in the

 The following are the meaauroraenta of two of the apecimcna .— -licngth 
 of head 4} Unea; length of glalwlla 8 liuea, width, juat in advance of neck 
 fanow, 2i llnoa, and at one-third the length from fhmt margin 2 linoa. 
 
 In % apecimen cotwiating of the thorax and pygidium the whole length 
 ia ux Hnoa, of which the pjrgicUum oocupiea api>arently a little lean than 
 one line. Width at firat aegment 6* Unea ; width of axia at aamo place 
 _ IJ Unea ; width at anterior margin of pjgidinm about 8 lUnea. 
 
 The poeition of the eye ia not ahewn in any apecimen that I have aeen, 
 bat from the width of the portiona of the fixed cheokj^ which remain, it 
 mnit be distant from the doraal furrowi nearly the width of the glabella. 
 
 Thia apeoiea appeara to be cloeely alUed to the one above cited fhim 
 Shomard'a paper, ao far as the charaoten of the glabeUa are concerned. 
 Aa however the proportiona are a Uttle diflerent, I ahall dispose of it as 
 •hove until I can have an opportunity of aubmitting ^specimen to Dr. 
 Shdmard. I

 about two linea ; the latter are deep pita dtuatod in the dorsal furrow or 
 just in the angle formed by the juncUon of the bane of the glalwlla with 
 the fixed cheeka. The neck aegment i« a flat plate bolinhig upwards and 
 bMikwarda at an angle of about 46". The neck furrow ia well defined all 
 acroaa the whole width of the head, being leaat distinct in passing over 
 the posterior p^ijrt of the t^abella. . - j * 
 
 Pygidium semioval with a flat border all round abrupUy bent down at 
 nearly a right angle. Axis corneal, moderately convex, extending the 
 whole length and oausbg a slight projection in the posterior margin. 
 Side lobes nearly flat, with five or six flat ribs each with a fine pleural 
 groove extending the whole length. On the axis there appear to be ton 
 or twelve closely crowded atonulations occupying five aixths the lengA, 
 the apex being apparenUy smooth. On approaching the margin the mde 
 ribs seem t^curve a Uttle forwards. Length of head, excluding the roe- 
 'trum, H lines, measured along base of glabella. Width of gUbella at 
 neck segment 1 J Unes, and just m front of the anterior pits 2 lines ; ele- 
 vation at neck segment less than one line, and at front of head, bo far as 
 seen, about 2 lines. Theae measurements refer to the largest head seen. 
 No perfect head has been collected, and I cannot therefore give the 
 length of the rostrum or moveable cheeks.
