PKEFACE.
National Division of North America, >
Boston, January 1, 1868. )
At the Twenty-Third Annual Session of the N. D.
held at Wilmington, Delaware, on the 2l8t day of
June 1867, the following resolution was adopted : —
Resolved, That the Most Worthy Scribe be in-
structed to prepare and have published, annually, a
Sons of Temperance Directory, for the use of mem-
bers of the Order ; said Directory to contain a full
list of the officers and members of the National Divi-
sion, with the residence of each ; and, also, as far as
possible, a list of the Grand and Subordinate Divi-
sions, with the place and time of meeting, and such
other information as may be considered desirable.
In accordance with the above, this little volume
has been prepared and published. In its preparation
I have endeavored to carry out the intention of the
N. D., but with nothing to guide me, except the reso-
lution, it would not be singular if many things of
value to the Order, which might have :r en inserted
were omitted. Some features not contained in the
resolution have been added, and it is hoped that the
publication will be satisfacljory to the National
IXivision.
Fraternally yours,
SAM'L W. HODGES, M. W. S.

jooperation. her rcHtralnIng and elevating Influence- so necci-
•ary for true and permaiKiit reform. We would take the
l>runkard from hit cup« and clothe him anew, prepare him to
discharge the duties of life, and present liim to the Church with
• clear head and mind, ready for her saving and hallowed
Influences. We would place the cause of TemiK-rance side by
side with the Gospel, aid the Church in her holy mission,
glorify God, and bencflt humanity.
" The Order eml.races more of the moral and religious ele-
ment of society than ever before, and large numbers of clergy-
men, inclu.ling many leading divines, .llninguisl.ed statesmen
and citizens, have united with us in aid of this great reforma-
Hon. Our principles and objects are becoming better known,
and our organization and mode ofoperation better understood!
" The power of a combined, compact, organized association
li being more and more recognized, not only by businessmen,
but by the professed philanthropist and statesman.
"The Order, by its plain constitution; its prat^tical code of
laws; Its sound financial basis; its enUre freedom from the
cumbersome machinery of signs, grips, and degrees; its Judi-
clous and gradual opening of its doors to the youth of both
•exes. Inviting woman to share in its great work ; its Increas-
ing coK)peratlon, sympathy, and union with the moral and
Christian elements of the country, inviting and receiving into
its ranks thousands of clergymen and leading laymen of the
Church, and uniting with them in prayerful, devoted labor, is
more and more receiving the confidence and co-operation of
the great and good of our land, and possessing superior advan-
tages for advancing the Cause and reaching the mass of the
people, educating, enlightening and saving."
The following pages will give some idea of > the strength of
the organization at this time and It is hoped will serve as a
guide to many brethren during their travels, either for busi-
ness or pleasure as well as prove a valuable reference book in
corresponding with members throughout our jurisdiction.
