Gentlemen, — I have the ho;iour to lay before you a report on tho state of the Common Schools of the County, but I mach regret that ia consequence of not havin:j received the whole of tho trustees' returns for the past year T shall be compelled, in a grt^nt measur.', to resort to those lor 1848, as the basis of the informaiion I am desirous of supply- ing. There were then 89 Schools m operation, conducted by 86 malo and 3 fenalo teachers, at an average salarv of £38 each. Theso schools were attended by 2243 male and 17U2 female pupils, out of a resident population of 9291. They were kept open, on the average.
