A meeting of tlie citizens of Ottawa was called by Ah!. Fcathcj-slon, acting Mayor, lor Monday the 22nd August, .n: 1 lie City Hall, to express sympathy for the sufferers "by the great tires of ihe ]nist week, in the Counties of Carleton and Ottawa, and in the Ottawa District generally, and to devise means to alleviate the distress occjiwioned lliereby. The citizens generally nobly responded to the call and attended in large numbers, and w'hcn tlie meeting was opened, there were ])resent amongst others, Parliamentary represent Ji- tives, Memljcrs ot the Dominion Government, Aldermen of the <'ity, Mill owners from the Chaudiei-c, and leading citizenw generally. ■i I ,7. The Chairman having briefly oxphiiiied the object of the meeting, the ibllovving Rosohition.s were moved and neconded by the respective parties and carried unanimously: — 1. Moved oy Mr. Slier iff Powell, and seconded bv Robert Lyon, Esq, M.P.r.; " That this meeting, deploring the terrible calamity that has desolated, and is still desolating a large portion of this sec- tion of country, would appeal to a generous public for aid for the sufferers, many of whom have been in an hour reduced from comparative affluence to absolute want." 2. Moved by Judge Armstrong, and seconded by Oeorgc Hay, Esq.; " That the Chairman be authorized to communicate with the Local Governments of Ontario and Quebec, asking assist- ance at their hands to meet this unhappy emergency." 3. Moved by Alexander Workman, Esq., and seconded by Edward McGillivray, Esq, ; " That the Mayor and Corporation of this City be requested by this Meeting, composed of citizens and rate-payers, to hold a Special Meeting, and to appropriate an additional sum of racney not less than $5,000, towards the sufferers by the iire, v/herever they may be found." 4. Moved by Alonzo Wright. Esq., M.P., and seconded by Dr. Grant, MP.; ''That this meeting would suggest the immediate conve- ning of the County Councils of Carleton, Ottawa, and Prescott and Russell, and the appropriation of a liberal vote by these bodies in aid of the sufferers." 5. Moved by Dr. Sweetland and seconded by Thomas McKay, Esq. ; " That a Centi*al Committee be appointed, for the purpo.-^je of collecting subscriptions in aid of the sufferers by the preseni calamity, and adopting such means as they may deem iiccessarv toward carrying out in the most effectual way all that can be done towards their relief, and that the following gentlemen do compose said Committee, viz. — J.
