" Newburgh Academy* The older records of NcA'bur^h Academy ^er" ished 7tli September, 1887, in the fire which destroyed the better part of the village. But from collec- tions of elderly men the following facts have been ascertained ; The Academy was established either in the latter part of iSff, or early in 18^ Work of excellent quality and enduring merit was done within its walls during; the first thirty years after its establishment. Young men and women from the various sections of the old Bay of Quintc district were considered scarcely qualified to begin the active life of the world until they had attended for a few terms at Newburgh Academy. During the years of i867-'7i John Campbell, M.A. . being headmaster, a score or so of young men from the distan* Bahama Isles, came, upon the recommeiKla- tion of Rev. Dr. Kyerson, to Newburgh At ideniy to get a liberal education. The school has always been improving in the quality of its work ; but wealthier communities have established and equipped schools which have recently outstripped the old Academy, so that its relative rank appears to have been becoming lower at the same time that, compared with its former self, the efficiency of the school yo;ir after yc.ir has steadily enchanced, and during the last three years has almost doubled in attendance. After the total destruction of the business portion of the village (September, 1887), the contitujed exist- en"'^ ot the Fllgh School was for a while doubtful, •ral who seemed to feel that tliey owed it much, p.. .ck to the venerable institution in the hour of its need, fuLincial and other aid as a partial return for benefits of a value not to be measured in money. An excellent library was donated ; and by united efforts the School was tided over, until the High Schools Act of 1891 coming into force, relieved the local munici- pality of a large proportion of the burden of mainten- ance, which for half a century the small incorporated vill.igc h.id borne a!or7r, ir.ti which w.is fast bccorning too heavy in these modern calamitous days.
