In these days when the saving of time en- ters into every man's calculations concerning Die business, it is evident that every method of obtaining so desirable an object, should be studied and adopted. The following Tables will be found eminently calculated to answer this great purpose, in all the ordinary trans- actions which require correct and accurate re- sults in relation to Wood, Lumber, Weights Corns Interest, &c., &c. And when it il considered that in addition to the savins: of tmc and labor, perfect certainty ab to the re- sults IS obtained by any person even mode- rately versed in arithmetic, it seems clear enough that such a work must not only be usetul but command a continuance of public iavor. And as more than fifteen thousand ot this work m its old form have been al- ready so d, it is confidently believed that there will be a still greater demand for this new and much improved edition. BiPFALO, Sept., 1851. RECOMMENDATION'S. The following extract from a letter received from Jonathan Child, Esq., late Mayor of the city of Koch^ter, has induced me to offer to the public a becond Edition of ray Pocket Reckoner. "For the last three years I have been extensively engaged m the Saw-rnill business, requiring the use of a log book ; not being able to iind any of voure m the bookstores, I purchased one published py JY' ®^"^"®^ of this city ; I soon found it va- ned from yours, and on a thorough comparison I found It to contain many errors. As the edition you published is entirely out of the market I have borrowed one for a short time, and the booksellers inform me it is very much inquired after, and that If you would get up a new edition, a large number of them could be sold here. "Jonathan Cahld." " The statement of Mr. Child can be relied upon and from my own knowledge of Mr. Doyle's qual- itications as an accountant I concur in his recom- mendation. Wm. C. Bouck." The accuracy of the calculations can be relied on as they have been tested in an extensive business for several years, and will be found very convenient to persons dealing in any of those asticles, or hiring men for any purpose, as they will at all times afford a correctness not readily acquired by hasty calcula- tion- THE AUTHOR. edfrom city of public a naively ing the any of | blished it ya- rison I Bdition I have ^sellers id that umber upon, I qual- 'ecom- edon, I (i^iness enient hiring aflfor^ Icula- TIMBER MEASURE. feet^ inches and parts, contained in a stick of limber of any dimension, from 18 to 36 feet long and from 9 to 24 inches square. . ihe column on the left, from 18 to 36 is intended for the length of I piece of Timber and the capt on for the breadth and 3 Example -^ A stick of Timber 23 feet W 15 mches broad, and 14 inches thick: to find ts contents, refer to the column on the left for the length 23 feet; then on a line imme dmtely under its dimension 14 by IsZ Karl' W^^^^ '^ '' ^^^*' ' ''<^< anS ? The following Table gives the number of square feet and inches contained in a Board one inch thick, frona 10 to 20 feet long, and from 6 to 24 inches broad; and from 21 to 55 feet long, and from 12 to 20 inches broad. The column on the left, is the length, and the caption the breadth in inches ; under which, and opposite to the length of a board, you have its contents in feet and inches. Example — Require the contents of a Board 35 feet long and 20 inches broad ; by reference, you will find it to be 58 feet, 4 inches. In measuring Boards, it is not customary to add the extra inches in length; but where ship or other long and thick plank is measur- »ed, it makes an essential diflference, which, however, in some measure may be remedied, by omitting all under 6 inches over the foot, and calling all over equal to a foot — in a large quantity^ the di&»8nce will be trifling. 43 -i^'i fi :i !
