Cbc missionary mite Box* ITS HISTORY. What is it? A simple paper box. To whom does it belong? The Woman's Foreign Missionary Society. What is it intended to hold? Offerings from grate- ful hearts. " What shall I render unto the Lord for all His benefits?" Why are the contents always of value? They are *' offered willingly unto the Lord." Who may use this box? All who love the Lord Jesus Christ, even the little children. ITS OBJECT. To help on a great and good work. To give the gospel and its. blessings to those that are without tliem. To encourage giving at all times, and in all cir- cumstances. To educate people to deny themselves, and to share with others what their Heavenly Father has given them. To gather in the littles, any coin from a cent upwards. Have these boxes ever been useful in this way? Yes. In many homes in Canada we could tell of the wonderful help they have given. In some homes in Old England, people have been using such boxes for forty years, and during that time, many hundreds of dollars have been dropped into them. ITS USE. How shall we use the Mite Box? Keep one for your own use, in your own room or closet. Let it be a constant reminder of the daily ordinary blessings of your life. Put one where friendly eyes can see it; let it remind them of duty and privilege. Treat it as a sacred thing (this feeling will grow upon you). Encourage the children to use it, and be ready to answer their questions about it. It will become a real friend to the children. Many kindly, helpful, family interests will gather round it. Open it twice in the year, or oftener. and send the contents to your Mission Band or Auxiliary. " The earth is the Lord's and the fulness thereof." THE VALUE OF SMALL GIFTS. ** This poor widozv hath cast in more than they all.'' If we had been by the side of our Savior, as He sat over against the treasury, should we have estimated the widow's mite as He did, as of more worth than the abundant treasures of the rich? And in these latter days of great outlay and great needs in the work of the Lord, as we anxiously watch the contributions of the churches, thanking God that He has moved the hearts of the wealthy to consecrate their silver and gold to His service, and praying that their gifts may be multiplied to supply the great need, do we seek for and value as we should the self-denying gifts of the poor? Do we present the missionary cause with as much ardor to the poorer churches as to the rich, and do we receive their offerings with as much gratitude? Ought the poor to give? It is sometimes said that we have no right to ask the poor to give, that they cannot aflford to do so. Did Christ thus judge? Did He say it was a pity that the poor widow had been moved to give to the Lord, that she ought to have kept the money for her own needs? How should He have said so who had the '* cattle on a thousand hills " at His command, and the hearts of men in His hand to turn them as He would? Could He not supply the widow's need, and do you suppose that He allowed her to lack for food when she returned to her humble home? He is the same Lord now, and His promise standeth sure: " Bring the tithes into My storehouse, and I will pour you out a blessing, till there shall not be room enough to receive it." If we believe His Word, we need not hesitate to ask the poor to give their mite to the Lord. Small gifts may accomplish great results. The value of a gift is not measured by its amount, but by the faith- fulness and self-denial which prompted it, and which bring down the blessing of the Lord, that blessing with- out which the most stupendous effort falls valueless to the ground, and which can make the smallest offering of love bring forth a hundredfold. A doll sent by a child, a little card with one sweet Bible verse upon it, may touch a heathen heart, may convince of the love of God and lead to Christ; may influence a whole family — who can tell where the influence will stop if the Lord but choose to bless it? Can you count the blades of grass ^'^ ^/ ' /i/^>'y(t /c i: that will come when you sow the tiny seed, if the Lord allows His rain and sunshine to fall upon it? How rightly to ask for small gifts. The power of prayer is to convert the world, not the power of money. We should keep this truth distinctly in view in asking and receiving the gifts of the poor. Not the numbers of missionaries, of churches and school-houses — these are all necessary means; but in vain without the Spirit of God. '* Paul may plant and Apollos water, but God giv- eth the increase"; and that in answer to prayer. He giveth the Holy Spirit " to them that ask Him "; and are not the prayers of the poor as valuable as those of the rich? As you present your cause to a congregation of the poor, pleading for their prayers as well as their gifts, may not the penny that is dropped into the box be ac- companied by an earnest petition that in its simple faith, its utter absence of pride and self-consciousness, may have power with God that we dream not of. The Savior says: " If ye abide in Me and My words abide in you. ye shall ask what ye will and it shall be done unto you." No doubt many of the rich, perchance in deep humility and longing to do more, are as near to Him as the poor; and yet He was poor on earth, and He says it is hard for the rich to enter into His Kingdom. At any rate, the prayers of the poor with small gifts are worth more than many thousand coldly, proudly or prayerlessly giv- en. And who knows but some poor person praying for the success of the gospel may be .answered by the descent of the Spirit into his rich neighbor's heart, constrain- mg him to give of his abundance. The promises of spiritual blessings in answer to prayer are unlimited. Let us all. rich and poor, remember that it is not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit, saith the Lord of Hosts. Then shall we judge more as the blessed Savior did, and realize that *' dear unto God are the prayers of the poor." ' C.L.R.B. Hendercon 8i Co., S and lo I^omhard St., Toronto.
