Col. iii. 16. It is the food of faith, the strength of all the graces and the infalli- ble guide to spiritual successes. The Psalm- ist confirms this as he sings of the man whose dehght is in the Lord in which he meditates day and night; Blessed, happy is he ; moreover," he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in Ms season; his leaf also shall not wither ; and what- soever he doeth shall prosper." Ps. i. 3. Those who have meditated upon the word most have always been the health- iest, strongest and happiest Christians. The sword of the Spirit has slain their deadliest enemies and increased their own might. Obedience to the word purifies the heart. Now, said Jesus to his disciples, ye are clean through the wprd which I have spoken unto you. 1 Pet. i. 22; John. XV. 3. To the law and to the testimony ; if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no liofht in them. Is. viii. 20. The Bible is a casket of precious jewels — other books contain only pebbles with a chance jewel here and there. In them man's voice is heard, man's heart beats, but in the word God speaks on earth and his heart is opened unto all. Ever drink at this spring, ever listen to this oracle, ever walk according to its utterances. George "Whitfield speaks for thousands in all ages, whatever their learning might have been — " I got more true knowledge from reading the word of God in one month than I could ever have acquired from all the writings of men." Read the word therefore, serious- ly, searchingly and daily. Ponder its 18 GO FOEWAED. \ f promises and its precepts. Prove its prescribed practice in an earnest striving after conformity to it every day and it will very soon become exceeding precious. Then will you be able to say with Job : " I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food." Job xxiii. 12. CONTINUE INSTANT IN PRAYER. The word and faith are the food of prayer. The believer cannot live with- out prayer, continual prayer, prayer without ceasing. Prayer is the Cbristian's vital breath, The Christianas Dative air; His watchword at the gates of death, He enters heaven with prayer. Prayer is the medium of our commu- nion with Grod. A^k for God's glory. Ask for Grod's glory, I say, for God's glory — not for self glory — self exaltation. If we are sons of Grod our chief end in life will be to glorify him. In the minutest trifles as well as in the most magnificent events will we be impelled by this purpose. "Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. 1 Cor. X. 31. This applies to our asking as well as to our eating. It illustrates very fully the following pass- age: Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts. We have no merit of our own to plead, therefore we must rest our petitions on the worthiness of another. Christ is all worthy. God is pleased with his work, and has accepted it for us, whereof he hath given assurance unto all men in that he hath raised him from the dead. We must stand in Christ and ask — Verily, verily I say unto you, whatso- ever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you. Hitherto ye have ask- ed nothing in my name ; ask, and ye shall receive that your joy may be full. John xvi. 23, 24. Christ's name, worthi- ness, merit, is the golden key that un- locks all the treasures of God. - ..j In the word God speaks to us, in prayer we speak to him, hence commu- nion and fellowship. After ar- duous labors he sought refreshment in prayer. See Matt. xiv. 23. He always found time for prayer, either rising up earlj^ in the morning going apart, or at evening after the toils of the day contin- uing all night in prayer. Without this fellowship with Grod he could not live — neither can we. We may pray anywhere, on the street, in the shop, in the house — everywhere, for God is ever}?^ where. However, we must not neglect closet prayer. That is the spring and living power of all others— whether street, or church, or shop prayer. But while we pray for ourselves, let us avoid selfishness in prayer. We are exhorted to make supplication for all saints and for all men. Eph. vi. 18 ; 1 Tim. ii. 12. This enlarges our hearts and sweetens prayer, height- ening its delightful enjoyment. Iv. 22 ; /hil. iv. 6, 7. fl The easiest way to pray and the best, given by that loving servant of Grod, Robert M. McCheyne, in the following 'ords : '^ Turn the Bible into prayer. Thus, if >u are reading the first Psalm, spread le Bible on the chair before you, and leel and pray, — " O Lord, give me the iessedness of the man that walketh not the counsel of the ungodly." "Search the Scriptures." CULTIVATE A THANKFUL SPIRIT. 4 A realization of the greatness of salvation, of the ''free gift,'' eternal life, and a con- sideration of all that it embraces will lead us to cry out with Paul, " Blessed be the Grod and Father of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in the heavenlies in Christ, &c. Eph. i. 3-6. An ungrateful believer in Jesus, we would think is an impossibility. It ever re- cognizes its own unworthiness and the grace of God. It ever abases itself and exalts and honors the free, full love of Jesus, and unceasingly do blessings be- come more blessed. Conscious that it is by grace we are saved, and not by any works of our own, we are led, without ceasing, to thank God and praise him for his loving-kindness ; and more than that, as an expression of this inwrought gratitude we desire anxiously to labor, for him. Religion is a)i element in the common daily life, manifesting itself in our every relation. It lives in the heart, and since out of the heart are the issues of life, it is seen in everything with which we have to do. The motto of i:he true and earnest believer is " For me to live is CHRIST and to die is gain." Phil. i. 21. He must tell to all around what a dear Saviour he has found. This is the natural and we may say necessary opera- tion of the new heart. The converts to the faith of Jesus, in Jerusalem, being scattered abroad upon the persecution that arose about Stephen trayelled as far as Phenice, and Cyprus, and Antioch, preaching the word. John i. 40-45 ; Acts ix. 20 ; Acts xi. 19. Thus it has ever been and will continue to be. They that love Jesus will confess him, speak of him. sing of him — labor to make him known everywhere. Our hearts deceitful and wicked, the flesh lustful and earthly, the devil enraged and subtle, vvill all be against us in this work, but our ear is to be open for 28 GO FOEWAED. Christ's word alone. Little we can do at first, but going forward in the strength of the Lord, he increases our might and enlarges our sphere and extends our sympathies, so that the lov- ing, longing heart, longs still more for wider usefulness. From the house the soul seeks the hamlet, from the hamlet in its quietude it goes out in desire to the busy haunts of men congregated in cities, and through the cities it grasps the wide, wide world for Christ. Hav- ing the feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace — go where we will, there is work to be done, for all the world is guilty before Grod. Oh then beloved, be ye steadfast, immove- able, always abounding iw. the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord. 1 Cor. xy. 58. It is the hammer of Grod that breaks the hard heart in pieces. For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater ; so shall my word he that goeth forth out of m.v mouth ; it shall not return unto me void^ but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it. Isai. Iv. 10, 11. Just think of it. Hundreds are going down to hell around us — will we not hold up Christ the Saviour ; hundreds are burden- ed with sad and heavy hearts — will we not speak of Christ's unchanging love ; hundreds are friendless and forsaken — will we not tell of Christ that sticketh 8^ GO FORWARD. closer than a brother; hundreds are pressed down to the lowest dei^ths w"ith weights 01 sin — w^ill we not preach the blood of Christ that cleanseth from all sin; hundreds are afllicted with soul sickness which no physician can cure — will we not direct them to Jesus the great physician of souls ? ? Yes, oh yes. "We cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard," and know. Acts iv. 20. The gospel is glad tidings to all men, therefore we must preach the word to all. GO FORWARD. 31 mil As we work for Jesus disconragments will often arise, but let us ever look up, and work on still, comforting ourselves with these precious promises ; cast thy bread upon the waters, for thou shall fi7id it after many days. They that sow in tears shall reap in joy. He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless, come again with re- joicing bringing his sheaves with him. Eccl. xi. 1 ; Ps. cxxxvi. 5, 6. Beloved friends let me entreat you to seek ear- nestly to CONFORM ONLY TO CHRIST. Human examplars, however high, fall far below the mark given us. He has left us an example that we should follow in HIS steps. 1 Peter ii. 21. He himself declares " I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have doner John xiii. 15. The Christian's walk is the only Bible that many read — How necessary there- fore that it be a clean copy. If we follow in the Saviour's steps, onr path shall be as the shining light, growing ever brighter and brighter. We shall flourish like the palm tree and grow like the cedar on Lebanon. Our faith will increase, our peace will pass understanding, our joy will be un- speakable as we are changed into the same image from glory to glory. Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus. Phil. ii. 5. He pleased not himself Rom. xv. 3. Speaking of his mission says : I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of of him that sent me. John vi. 38. And of its fulfilment — he that sent me is with GO FORWAED/ 33 me; and the Father hath not left me alone; \for I do always those things that please him, John yiii. 29. This is the fount of our delights, the source of our comforts, and the efficient cause of our growing likeness to Jesus — doing always those things that please him. If any man will come after me, let him DENY HIMSELF, and take up his cross and follow me. Matt. xvi. 24. Let us sing as did the holy and heavenly Herbert : let thy sacred will All thy delight in me fulfil! * Let me not think an action mine own way, But as thy love shall sway, < Resigning up the rudder to thy skill. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick and it giyeth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before MEN, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father wliich is in heaven. Matt. v. 14-16. If we love the Lord we must confess him. The life of love is confession. Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. "Whoso- ever therefore shall confess me before men^ him will 1 confess also before my Father which is in heaven. But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven. Matt. x. 32, 33. The confession of Christ is generally formally made, by joining ourselves to so^ne portion of the Lords people, thereby declaring ourselves GO FOEWARD. 35 on the Lord's side. Thus we separate ourselves to the service of Grod. Thus we make a clear and decided stand, be- fore men for Christ. There is then no doubt, no uncertainty as to whose part we belong. This ought to be done a» soon AFTER our acceptoiice of Jesus Christ, as circumstances will admit. In apostolic times immediately on the recep- tion Oi the Saviour, believers were add- ed to the church — made public confes- sion of their faith. (Read the Acts of the Apostles.) Moreover, beside the confes- sion Jesus demands, we in ourselves require fellowship — the fellowship of kindred minds. Provision has been piade for this want by the wisdom of Grod in the institution of the church. There are gathered all who profess to love the Lord, entered into covenant en- gagement with Grod and each other to ob- serve all the ordinances of Christ's ap- 86 GO FORWAED. pointmeiit. They watch, over each other, encourage and comfort each other, help each other, and pray for each other. They have a common Lord, common interests, common dangers and a common end. In view of this state of things, the Apostle addresses believers in Heb. iii. 12, 13. Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living Grod. But EXHORT ONE ANOTHER DAILY, while it is called to-day ; lest any of you be har- dened through the deceitfulness of sin. Find a spiritual home for yourselves where you may enjoy the communion of saints. Choose pastors who may feed you with heavenly manna. See Eph. iv. 8-16. Now, therefore, (by grace, through faith in Jesus) ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow-citi- zens with the saints and of the HOUSE- GO FORWARD. 37 'hold of god ; and are built upon the foundation of the Apostles and Prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone ; in whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord ; in whom ye also are builded together for an habita- tion of God through the spirit.
