Lucas, of the .lardin des I'lantes. The signatures bore tlie impress of the printer's stamp as fol- lows:— "Imprimerie de Fain. Itue Kacine Xo. 2, 2= Auteur." In the middle of each stamp was written the date at which tlie impression was sent, sliowing that the whole work was printed In 1838, between the 20th of July and the 20th of December. The title-page also bore the printed date, 1838. Kurmeister's llandbuch H, il (containing the Orthoptera), has always been granted priority of publication over Serville's Orthopt^res; but while the title-page of that por- tion of Burmeister's second volume bears the date of 1S38, the first half (on the Neurop- tera) is dated 1839. These dates compared with the completion of Serville's work late iu 1838, seem to throw some doubt upon the priority of authority in the two cases, Tlio time of the actual publication of Burmeistcr's Orthoptera may perhaps be decided by reference to the periodicals of the day.
