' V li % ' (\ l» ' The Auditors of the Church Society of the Diocese of Toronto beg leave to report That they have duly examined your Secretary's statements for the financial year ending the 30th April, 1869, viz. : No. 1. Statement of Receipts and Expenditure. . •< 2. Balance Sheet. ** 3. Statement of Debentures, Mortgages, &c., held. " 4. Statement of Debentures deposited for safe keeping in the Branch of the Quebec Bank, Toronto. The Auditors have carefully compared these statements with the books of the Society, and have found them correct in their details. The items of receipts have been tested with their supporting vouchers. The pay- ments made have been on cheques duly authorized. The Auditors have further verified the statement of securities on band. No. 3. The mortgages and other securities in the hands of the Secretary were by him produced. The debentures lodged for safe keeping in the Branch of the Quebec 4)ank here, are fully detailed in Statement No. 4, to which is attached the oei^V<.vite of the Bank that the same are held on deposit. The Auditors beg leave to suggest a change iu connection with the working expenses of your Society, which, if adopted, will be found, they think, to have a beneficial effect. Under the present system the General Purposes Fund has to bear the whole of your working expenses. This Fund, it is surmised, was formed mainly to meet various requirements not provided for by other special funds. When, therefore, so large a portion of this Fund is used in meeting the working expenses of the Society, it follows that many necessary appropriations which it otherwise could make, either cannot be made, or must be curtailed in amount. The Auditors think the question worthy of con8idera,tion, whether the objects of the Society would not bo more efficiently and equitably served by an appor- tionment of the working expenses to the respective Funds under manage- ment, thus relieving the General Purposes Fund of much of the burden which it now alone bears, and enabling your Society to provide for calls of a more generally diffused character. In conclusion the Auditors have much pleasure in bearing testimony to the continued efficiency of the Secretary's department. All which is respectfully submitted. Toronto, 16th June, 1869. The Auditors of the Church Society of the Diocese of Toronto bog leave to report : That they have duly examined the boolcs, accounts, and securities of the Clergy Trust Fund for tlie year ending the 30th April, 18C9. That the Balance Sheet herewith submitted (Statement No. 1) has been carefully compared with the ledger of the Trust, and found to agree. That the items of Receipts and Expenditure, as shewn in Statement No. 2, have also been carefully examined and verified, and that the items of payment have been found supported by cheques signed by the authorized members of the Committee, and duly acquitted by the payee. That the Securities of tiie Trust shewn in Statement No. 3, deposited for safe-keeping in the branch of the Merchants' Bank in Toronto, were duly produced to the Auditors at the Bank, and by them verified. The Auditors also beg to submit a Statement (No. 4) of the Debentures held by (he Trust, amounting in all to $376,815.70. Of these $3(i7,05-'i.70 are deposited for safe keeping in the Branch of the Merchants' Bank of Canada here, as certified by .1. 0. Harper, Esq., Manager, per Statement No. 6. .$1000 City of Hamilton are held for collection by the Diocese of Ontario, and £1800 sterling, or $8760 Uovernment of Canada 5 per cent. Debentures are yet in the hands of the bankers in London, Kngland. The Auditors would refer to their last Annual Report, adopted by the Society, in which they suggested tiiat these Debentures should be brought out to Canada, to be placed with the other securities of the Tru!st. The Auditors would further suggest that a competent person, acquainted with the connection of one document to another, be detailed to arrange the mortgages and collaterals, which, from frequent reference probably, are now in some little confusion. The Auditors beg leave to call^attentiou to the following balances on the debit'side of the Balance Sheet, viz. : Audit account $2550 00 Award account 40,733 82 Law Expenses 3:^0 50 Expense account 100 92 Salaries account 433 33 Income and Expenditure account 43,404 17 $87,561 24 Of these items *' Award account" speaks for itself, ami should of right be met by "Capital." The remaining balances we must conclude have been produced by the exigencies of the past, at times when the income of the Trust fell short of the requirements for stipends an• M I-- t>. t» o C4 09 to T^ o eo •-< 1^ CO o M r- o> >« c 9> 00 i QQ a b " c* 09 a fl e o gOOOusoooMeoNONeo^.i-iooo© O0iOiMOOOC0r«t0OAC>9F-i00OOOt> «ik 1» Ocoo>oOOoei:o)cooo>eo<«it« CI ill APPENDIX. 151 CLERGY TRUST FUND.
