HOW TO KEEP LENT. ^s'HE FoiiTY Days of Lent are set apart by the Church to be kej^t |f| , in memory of our Blessed Lord's life of suffering, and especially ^ of His fasting forty days and forty nights in the wilderness before His temptation. That time was spent by Him not only in fasting, but also, we may be sure, in earnest prayer ; as we read that at other times " He with- drew Himself into the wilderness and prayed." Christians who would be like Him spend their Lent in prayer and fasting too. Lent, then, is a season more especially intended for those who love God, and are trying to serve Him. It is to help them, by means of holy Christian discipline, to serve Him better and to love Him more. The following advice of Bishop Patrick, a holy and learned Divine of the English Church of the 17th century, m?y prove useful : " Let every one of us, all this Lent, retire ourselves as much as possible, making no visits, nor willingly receiving any, if nothing but civility oblige us to it. Let the consideration of the Divine mercy towards mankind move us to afflict ourselves with fasting; or, if that cannot be, with spare diet. Make no feasts, nor accept of invitations to them. Leave the playhouse empty, make the Churches full, give alms liberally, and spend the time when you come from Church in setting all things right at home." The following headings may assist persons in framing a rule for themselves. If they require advice upon the subject, it will be gladly given by the Pastor of this Church. I.
