 rREAMBLE.— Whereas the use of intoxicMincc

 sf)nal and family comfort, io the commission of ihe 
 (oost flairrant crimes, and in numerous instances !o 
 the entire overthrow of moral and religious princi- 
 ples, while the means employed to counteract iho 
 growing evils have in many 'places failed of sue-- 
 cess, rendcrinj^ it evident that seme determined 
 and systematic ciforts pre incumbent on the friends 
 of morality and religion to stem the torrent of in- 
 temperance, that is laying waste in its deadly pro- 
 ^ress all that is noble in our nature, dear to 'us as 
 Christians, and valuable as members of society;— 
 For this purpuse, in dependance on Divine aid, we 
 have formed ourselves into a Society, for the sup- 
 j»Tession of intemperance in this Town and neigh- 
 bourhon<{. 
 
 Article Isi, That this Society shall be called 
 the Kingston Temperance Society. 
 
 Article 2nd. That the requisites of membership 
 shall be conformity to the rules of the Society, and 
 signing the following declaration, or pledge.— 
 *• We, the undersigned, do voluntarily agree lo 
 " abstain from the use of all intoxicating diinks as

 from the Society on notifying the Secietary of his

 Rule 1st. Every person wishino: to be a member 
 of this Society shall be held on trial for one month, 
 and upon oeing found to have faithfully adhered to 
 the pledge, he shall, at the first general meeting 
 after the expiration of that time, be admitted a 
 member, and announced such on that occasion.

 report shall be made of the violation to the Com-

 nied as expressed in Rule 3rd, report of the ca&e 
 shall he made at the next Committee Meeting. 
 
 F^h. On r<'port bcincc made in i^ny case of a vio- 
 lation of the pledge, the Committee shdll appoint 
 two of their number to wait on the person olfend- 
 injr, and on receiving promise of amendment, with 
 a fair prospect of contrition, be shall be continued 
 a member. 
 
 6lh. Every accusation of a member violating 
 the pledge received from a person not a member 
 of the Society shall be well authenticated or it 
 shall not be entertained. 
 
 7th. Inf^:)rmation of a violation of the pledge 
 given to one of the Committee, shall be considered 
 as given to the Committee officially. 
 
 8th. Every member of the Society shall consid- 
 er himself under obligation to report all violations 
 o( the pledge that he knows to he true, to one or
