PREFACE Parliament, in sixty-iwo, by gislrar of the The Compiler of this Companion, in introducing such a work into Canada, deems it hardly necessary ibr him to say any thing as to its utihly or necessity. In England, a simiUir publication has been found, not only of value to those ia public life, but also of general interest, and there is every reason to anticipate that one adapted to this Piovince will be found equally acceptable to the Canadians. Jts contents are accurate and reliable, having been derived from the very best sources of information, although in its preparation some little inaccuracies may have crept in, whi'.'h may be easily detected by the discriminate and intelligent reader. The absence of all political bias and opinion, will be observed by the reader, and the Compiler will endeavour to carry out this plan in all future editions. He begs to record his grateful acknowledgments to Captain Dod, the Author of the English Companion, for valuable advice and information, in compiling a work of this descrip- tion ; and he must not omit to acknowledge the great benefit he has derived from Mr. J.
