The Anti(juarian Book-shop, wliich is the true preserver, and ofteiitimes the tomh, of the books embodying the knowledge and wisdom, the errors and follies of past generations, is also asonrce of great delight and a treasure of informa- tion for the lover of books, the historian, the scholar, the librarian or the student. With the daily increasing ac(iuaintance of the people of this free and young country with the learning and culture of old and monarchical Europe, the irnportance of the Antiquarian Bookstore and the benefits of the same are becoming more and more appreciated and recognized, and with the growth of wealth and leisure, a more systematic study of the arts and sciences is permitted. The time is not far distant when an intelHgent and discriminating public will demand of the bookseller, and especially of the dealer in old books, a thorough train- ing and a wide knowledge of his trade, combined with a sound judgment on all mat- ters pertaining to books and literature. Only men who have these qualifications and who possess the requisite fund of energy for one of the most ideal of the professions, the art of bookselling, will in coming days gain the patronage of book buyers and meet with success, not the underseller, bookbutcher, dry goods bazaar, etc., which to-day are the ruin of the honest bookseller. P]very tradesman should have honest prices, and not intend to upbuild his own fortune on the ruins of his legitimate competitors. The best method of combatting these guerrillas is to let them severely alone, for by so doing they will naturally exterminate one another. This does not preclude, of course, the necessity of meeting the fluctuations of the market, provided one can do so without actual loss. A bookseller should also be willing to stand the loss of a sale, if circumstances advise this. Above all every bookseller should take pride in carrying as large and well selected a stock as his means allow, suitable for his locality, and endeavor to be better versed on questions per- taining to books and their contents than his colleagues. An essential factor in the successful conduct of the bookseller's business, is a full and complete Library of Bibliographical and Literary Reference Works, Trade-Catalogues, Publishers' Lists, etc. This will be more appreciated by book-buyers, than any unnecessary cutting of prices on popular books. The want of a "Directory of the Antiquarian Booksellers and Dealers in Second-hand Books in the U. S." has long been felt by Booksellers, Librarians and ■M — (I private book-buyers. The present first attempt in compiling such a Directory will un(loui)te(ily contain many imperfections, winch could not l)e avoided on account of the dilliculties encountered in obtaining the desired inlornjation, being partly due to the indifference of the dealers in this branch of the trade. Nevertheless this Directory will be found very serviceable for all those who will know how to use it in a systematical research for books "out of print", or books wanted to be purchased second-hand at reduced prices. The marts where such books are kept on sale are recorded and classified, thus forming a key to the entire Antiquarian Book Trade of America. A revised and more complete edition may be published at some future time if the general interest indicates its demand. Corrections and additions will be thankfully received and faithfully recorded, to be incorporated in the next issue. Some of the firms reported in the Directory, are but partly dealei-s in old books, and their attention may be chiefly directed to new books. Other dealers are per- haps not classified under the headings of their specialties, as they failed to inform me to this effect, while others claimed to make every branch their specialty. This compilation proved to me a very tedious one. I had, as I began the same, no idea of the difficulties to contend with, or the time necessary to complete it. I take this opportunity of expressing thanks to a number of gentlemen in the trade for their kind assistance and co-operation. MUioaukee, June 15, 1885. C, N. CASPAR. 1 HINTS FOR F/ND/NG THE AUTHOR, TITLE, PUBLISHER, PLACE OF PUBLICATION, EDITION, SIZE, OR PRICE OF BOOKS. By C. N. CASPAR. First of all consider the nationality of the author, or in which country the hook may have heon i)ublishe(l, and whether an original and better edition, or a reprint and cheaper edition, is wanted. If the year of publication is unknown, always begin your research in a Trade- catalogue, embracing the latest period, and then look in the previous volume, in order to always find the newest, last or revised edition and the latest i)rice of the publisher for the book. Persons wishing to obtain a certain book, very often do not give the title or date correctly, state a wrong place of publication or misspell the author's name. Refer to similar titles and names, disregarding the date given. If tlie book is supposed to be an American book and not readily found in Leypoldt's American Catalogue and its Supplements, or Kelly's or Roorbach's Catalogues, refer to Low's Englisii Catalogues 1835 to 1884, always beginning with the volume embracing the latest period. If in vain, turn to Lowndes' Bibliograph- er's Manual, Watt's Bibliotheca Britannica, Truebner's Bibliographical Guide or Rich's Bibliotheca Americana. Should these researches all prove unsuccessful, the book may be of a very recent date and to be found in the last annual, monthly or weekly "Record of Books," as issued by the model organ of the American Book Trade, the New York "Publisher's Weekly," which journal is indispensable to every bookseller. If you have reasons to believe, that the book wanted is a recent British publication, turn to the last volume of Low's English Catalogue, or to the latest monthly and weekly Records of the "Bookseller" or the "Publisher's Circular," London. If nothing is known about the book, except the author's name and an in- definite indication of its contents, but no title, or perhaps an incorrect title, it will save time, first of all to look up the author's identity as regards initials, nativity, period of life, literary fame, etc., and to trace the book accordingly. s — The following works me valuable for this purpose: any Standard Encyclo- pii'dia; Allibone's Dictionary of English Authors; IMiillips' The (In'ut l'>il)lio- graphical Keferencc' Index; AdaniB' Dictionary of English liitoraturc, and the Library Catalogues, OB mentioned below. If merely the title is known, the following works and Library Catalogues will he found in this, as in many other respects, very serviceable: Adams, Dictionary of English Literature. Wheeler, Who wrote it? Brewer's Readers' Hand Hook. Hrewer's Dictionary of I'hrase and Fable. The vVmerican ('atalogue and Supi)lements. Leypoldt's Digest of American Publications, contained in the Trade List Annual for 1875. Low's Indexes to the English Catalogue. Whitaker, Reference Catalogues. The monthly and weekly Records of the "Publisher's Weekly" and those of the London "Bookseller" and "Publisher's Circular." The Library Catalogue of the Boston Athenseum. The Class-lists of the Boston Public Library. Mr. Noyce's admirable Catalogue of the Brooklyn Library. The Catalogue of the Library Company of Philadelphia. Mr. Schwartz's Catalogue of the Apprentices' Library of New York. Mr. SpofTord's Index Catalogue to the Library of Congress and the subse- ([uent volumes of the new Catalogue of this National Library. Mr. Linderfelt's new Catalogue of the Public; Library of Milwaukee. See also the catalogues of large dealers, arranged according to titles. Very often books can be traced by glancing over the Subject Entries of the American Catalogue, Low's Indexes, or the larger Library Catalogues. If only the place of publication is known and nothing definitely in regard to author and title, address some dealer as named in thifi Directory, or other book- sellers, residing in that place or state. The same may be done, if the author and title are known, but the publisher cannot be found, or the book is not obtainable through the ordinary channels of the trade. For books issued by the U. S. Government, address the "Public Printer" Washington, D. C. If such books are ordered before printing, this officer is obliged by law to furnish copies of any books issued by the different State-Departments to citizens of the U. S., at the cost of production. But the Government publications may frequently be had for a short time after publication, at the same prices, irom — the '•I'uhlic I'rintcr'' or the respective depaitmcut. A list of dealers in Buch books, is to be found in tliis Directory. For the publicatioiiH of the varit)UH States, address the "Superintendent of I'ublie l*r(»|)erty" or Secretary of State at the dilVcrent State capitals. Hooks published for private; distribution are j^enerally not cataloRued in Trade (!ataloj;;ues, but ar«! S()nietinies found in tin; [library Catalogues; they are often jirocurable from the local booksellers when' they have appeared. In obtaining books in sonje smaller towns or Western cities, write also, if such an address is known to you, to the local bookseller, otherwise to the editor or I)ublislier ot a newspaper, some law Cirm or the postmaster of such a place. For books, known to be "out of pi.ut," and coBtly works, wished to be ob- tained second-hand at a reduced price, make incjuiries at the dealers in Anti(iuarian and Se(!ond-hand books, as per Dire^'tory, or advevtjse for American books in the "I'ublishers Weekly," "The Hookui it," or th" 'American Bookseller," and for Hrirsh publications, in the LonUon "Jio< kseiler" or the ''Publisher's Circular." Always state the full title, imprin!, etc., of the book wanted, as near as possible. Every bookseller should (H)nsider it his duty to read the advertisement column of "Books Wanted" in the al)t»ve Trade .lou'imls and to oiler such books to the advertisers as he may have on hand, not charging an exorbitant price for tliom. The advertiser frecjuently does not want such books bad enough to pay a high, or even a moderately high, price for them. Sometimes copies of books, which are reported "out of print" with the pul)li8her, are often obtainable from some jobber or larger retailer in some other city, whose stock is not yet exhausted, and it was partly for thi.s reason, that a list of jobbers in new books was included in this Directory. Publishers, especially in England, in many instances, do not give the d^te or the edition of their books and this can then only be found by referring ta the "Annual Records" of the Publisher's Weekly or "flow's Annual English Catnlogues." The American ('atalogue, Kelly's and Roorbach's Catalogue and Low's Engli.^h Catalogue, do also, in many cases, report the date and the edition. The sizes of books as applied by American Publishers and as adopted by the American Library Association, are somewhat larger than those for which the same terms are used in England, (lermany and France, so that the book which is called abroad a 12mo, becomes in this country a 16mo, an 8vo, a 12mo, a small 4to an Svo, etc. The sizes of books are designated in the U. S. viz: — Folio, mure than 12 inches high; 4to., 10 — 12 inches; 8vo., 8 — 10 inches; 12mo., 7 — 8 inches; IGmo., 6—7 inches; 24mo,, 5 — 6 inches; 32mo., 4 — 5 inches; 48mo., 3 — 4 inches. The prices of books are in many instances changed by the publisher some- 10 — time after their publication, or when a new edition appears, and it is advisable to refer to the publisher's latest list, before ordering. Very recent or forthcoming books, not yet recorded ii, the catalogues or trade journals, should be looked up in the latest announcements of the publishers^ generally to be found in the Trade Journals, particularly in Special Announcement numbers, or on special lists and circulars, issued by these publishers. All Catalogues and Trade-lists of importance, received by booksellers daily, should be preserved and filed for reference. The best apparatus for filing Catalogues, Cir- culars, Quotation of prices, etc., are E. W. Woodruff's Patent Cases (Washington, D.C.) These are indeed very practical and time-saving, especially if around the Lists and Circulars of each publisher, is put a manila paper cover of the same size as the inside of the case and marked with the name of the respective publisher at the top of the front page of the cover. All these lists should be arranged in alphabetical order. This method does away with all annoyance in keeping Trade-lists and Cir- culars in sight, as one can find everything in a moment, or take out obsolete mat- ter to be replaced witli something new. When titles of works on a certain subject are wanted, see the Subject Entries or Index volumes to the American Catalogue and R. Clarke ct Co's, Cincmnati, Special Catalogues. For British works see Low's Indexes and Whitaker's Reference Catalogues and for old publications, the subject part of Watt's Bibliotheca Britan- nica. For German Works: Buechting's Repertorium, Hinrich's, Gracklauer's and Seydel's Special Catalogues, Wolfs Vademecums and Steiger ct Co.'s Lists. For French works: see Lorenz's Index, Gerold's Special Catalogues and other classified Catalogues of large Retailers in French books. Consult in regard to special bibliographies of subjects the "Bibliographical Aids" :n the American Catalogue, Subject Entries to vol. 1; List of Bibliographies in the British Museum, Sabin's Books about Books, Petzholdt's Bibliotheca Bibliographica and Vallee'i Bibliographic des Bibliographie. As additional and time-saving helps to the Indexes of the American Catalogues of Low's Indexes and other works quoted, the following catalogues may bb mentioned. For School- and Textbooks: the Educational Catalogue, which is very full, exceedingly well arranged and issued annually by the "Publisher's Weekly." Special lists of Miscrllaneous British School books, are published by Low & Co.; Sampkin, Marshall & Co.; Henry Frowd, (Clarendon Press) and Dulau & Co., all of London. Truebner's Catalogue of Dictionaries and Grammars in all languages is a very useful trade tool. For Medical Works: Clarke &Co. Cincinnati; Lippincott & Co., Philadelphia; Vail & Co.; Steiger & Co.; \y"estermann & Co., of New York and some of the — 11 — to larger Medical Publishers issue good retail Catalogues. Wolf's Medical Vademecuin and Billing s Grand Index to the National Medical l.ibrary at Washington and the Index Medicus, New York, are important. For Engineering, Mechanics and Technology: see the Patent Office Library Catalogue; Catalogue of Modern Works on Science and Technology, issued by Chapnmn ci^ Hall, London; Gerold's (Vienna) Catalogue of English, German and hrench Works on Technology, embracing the publications of 1865 to 1882. The Publishers' Weekly, established in 1872, with which was incorporated the American LiTK.^AFiY Gazette ano Puhlisiikrs' CmcuLAR (established in 1853), by purchase from Mr. George W. Childrt,is recognized as the independent representative of the publishing and bookselling interests in the United States. The central feature of the paper, that makes it an indispensable aid to the trade, to libraries, and to literary people, is its Bibliogkaphical Department. Every possible facility of reference is afforded by a combination of methods which records the books, by the week, the month, the season, and the year, under the author, the publisher, the title, the subject, and the class. It is acknowl- edged that no other journal, at home or abroad, supplies as practical and satisfactory a record of the publications of its country. The bibliographical department includes: 1. A "Weekly Kkcoru" of all new American publications and rejirints, giving their full titles (according to the rulesof the American Library Association), with place and date of publication, publisher's name, size, number of pages, and price; and also descriptive notes of books received. This first and practically the official record is arranged all^habeiically hy the authors or litlrs, and for ready reference is placed in the same accessible position in each number. 2. A weekly "Ordek List", being brief-title entries, with prices, of the "Weekly Record," arranged alphabetically by the pnblisiurs. The object of this list is to present at a glance the simul- taneous if^sues of certain publishers, and to save time in the making up of orders. 3. A monthly "Index to the Weekly Record," being short-title entries, with the publish- er's name and the size and price, arranged alphabetically by the authors, ivith rejerences from the titles or catchwords, anJ from the subjects. With each entry is given also the number of the "Weekly Record" containing the full-title entry a* d note. 4. A monthly "Class Synopsis," grouping the works of the month under such heads as Biography, Description, Education, Fiction, Fine Arts, History, Law, Literature, Medical Science, Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Poetry and the Drama, Political and Social Science, Theology and Religion, etc. 5. A semi-annual classified list of Forthcominz Publications, given in the Spring and Fall Ani>')unceraent numbers, in which also the announced books are more fully described under the name of the publishers, arranged alphabetically. 6 An aiuiual Index to the books of a year, advertised by the more prominent publishers in the 80-called Annual Summary Number, which generally is published in the last week of January. In this number is also given a chissified summary of the more prominent publications of the year. 7. Regular List o/ the Season, published as follows: A complete priced catalogue of Educa- ti inal Books, in July; a priced list of the Holiday Bookt and prominent Juvenile Books of the year, in November; a supplementary list of new Educational Books, February; a list of Guide and Bummer Books in May. 8. Quarterly lists of the Publications of the U. S. Gwernnunt. 1). Semi-monthly lists of the more prominent New English Books. 10. Special Bibliographies. The timely bibliography, now in course of publication, is "Literary Property"; a catalogue of books and authors relating to literary property (copyright, international copyright and kindred subjects), by Thorvald Solberg. The Literary Department includes comprehensive intelligence as to books forthcoming and pul hing movements, at home and abroad, gathered with the aid of representatives in other cities; edii rial discussions on book and trade subjects, as copyright, postal questions, book production and manufacture, etc.; original contributions and representative extracts on like topics; topuai "cues" or references to bibliographical sources or courses of re.-iding and study ; journalistic notes; business notes, literary and trade notes, etc $3.20 per year, 10 cents per number.
