Quebec, ]5th February/, 1837. + JOS. Btshop of Quebec. District of Quebec, PEOTHONOTAIIY'S OFFICE, 6th March, l837. Be it remembered that on the sixth d?iy of Marcbf in the year of our Lord Christ, one thousand eight hundred thiriy-seveDt Samuel Nedson, Printer and Stationer, residing in the city of Quebec, hath deposited in their OlKce the Title of a Work, of which is in the words following, thi^t is to say ; « Sketch of the Associa> TION FOR THE PROPAGATION OF THE FaITH IN THE DlOCESS OF Quebec," the right whereof he claims as Proprietor. Entered according to Act of the riovincial Legislature, intitu- led, <' An Act for the Protection of Copy Rights," by PERRAULT & burroughs; Prothonotarys of His Majesiys Court of King's Bench for the District of Quebec. SKETCH OF THE ASSOCIATION FOll THE PROPAGATION OF THE FAITH, IN THE DIOCESS OF QUEBEC. EC. CE, n the seven t iiy of which SOCIA- ES3 OF IntUu- King's This Religious and Charitable Association, called the Association for the Propagation of the Faith, recommended to the Clergy and people of this Diocess by a Pastoral Letter of the Right Reverend the Catholic Bishop of Quebec, dated 20th December, 1836, has for its object to assist with Prayers and Alms, the Missionaries sent to preach the Gospel, in extending and propagating the Catholic Faith, and enlightening with its Di- vine Light, the Indian Tribes of the remotest parts of this Diocess; and particularly those among them who are still buried in the darkness of Heathenism. This pious Institution has likewise for its object, the establishment of Missions in various other parts of the Diocess of Quebec, among a large number of Catholics deprived of the benelfits of Religion, and unable, through poverty, to provide for the maintenance of Preachers of the Gospel. The Association for the Propagation of the Faith, as proposed in the Pastoral Letter adverted to, has been authorised for tlio Diocess of Quebec, by an Apostolic brief of His Holiness Pope Gregory the XVI., dated 28tli February, 1836. The Association is composed of the Faithful of both sexes, whose conduct is such as to draw down the blessings of God upon the holy work which it has for its object. All persons joining it, enjoy the favors and privileges granted to a similar Insti- tution established at Lyons, and several other Dio- ceses in France, within the last few years, by virtue of briefs from the Sovereign Pontiffs, Pius VII, Leo XII, Pius VIII, and Gregory XVI, the pre- sent Pope. ADVANTAGES AND PRIVILEGES. The advantages and privileges granted to the Association for the Propagation of the Faith, by the Sovereign Pontiffs, are : I. A Plenary Indulgence, on the day of the Fnding of the Holy Cross, the 3rd May, that day being the anniversary of the Institution of this Association. II. A second plenary indulgence, on the 3rd Decembof, the festival of St. Francis Xaverius, Patron of the Association. I III. A third plenary indulgence, once in each month. Each member is allowed to choose the day of this indulgence, provided he has repeated every day of the month, the prayers hereafter men- tioned. Remarks. — 1st. In order to secure these indul- gences, it is necessary to confess, communicate, visit the Parish Churcji, and pray in it according lo the intention of the Sovereign Pontiflf. [Confession may be made, the eve of the day on which it is desired to obtain the indulgence.] 2nd. Pope Leo XII, by a rescript of the 11th May, 1824, dispenses the sick or infirm members from visi(:ng the Church, provided nevertheless, that they accomplish, according to the best of their power, and in conformity with the advice of their confessors, the other conditions required. IV. Besides the above, an indulgence of 100 days may be obtained at any time, when, with a contrite heart, the prayers of the Association are repeated, the prescribed alms, or other alms in favor of the Missions given, or some other work of piety or charity performed. All these indulgences, granted by a brief of Pope Pius VII., dated 15th March, 1823, are ap- plicable to the souls in purgatory. OBLIGATIONS To be complied with in order to obtain the Indulgences above mentioned, I. Each member will repeat, once every day, the Lord's Prayer and the Angelical Salutation, with this invocation : Saint Francis Xavier, pray for us, for the purpose of drawing down the Divine blessing upon the Priests who devote themselves to the service of the Missions ; upon their labors, and also upon the Association which is to contri- bute to their success. It will be sufficient to apply to this purpose, and once for all, the Lord's Prayer and the Hail-Mary of the morning or evening prayer. II. Each member shall give an alms of one half-penny per week ; nevertheless, without their being obliged to limit their generosity to so tri- fling a contribution. Remarks. — 1st. '^IJie circumstance of the alms required from the members, is not in opposition to the Spirit of the Holy Council of Trent, (Sess. 21, Ch. IX. De Reformatione,) nor yet to the bull of Pius v., dated 8th February, 1567, on the same subject ; for there is no question here of begging through the publication of indulgences ; and those who are authorized to cause the faithful i to participate in these spiritual favors cannot be suspected of seeking- temporal interests. *2nd. If a person in easy circumstances asso- ciates with nine poor persons, and engages to fur- nish the contribution required, these nine persons may gain the indulgences granted to the Associa- tion for the Pro])agation of the Faith, providing they comply with all the other conditi(»ns pre- scribed. RULES. Art. I. The Association may begin in each Parish by the first person who may wish to pro- mote the object in view ; and in order to this it will be sufficient to associate him (or herself) with nine other persons who will correspond with and remit to him or her their contributions, either weekly or monthly. There may thus be formed in each Parish as many sections as there are tens of persons willing to become members. The person presiding orer each section may, if desirous, keep a list of his or her associates, and will see that the vacancies occasioned by death, absence, or other- wise, be filled up. Art. II. In every place where the number of sections will amount to ten or more, parties of 100 may be formed, the heads of which shall be chosen from among the persons presiding over the III W(! ['^-ir' 8 sections. Tlie clilefs of these Iiiindreds shall be elected by those of the sections. In these cases the heads of sections will be acconntable to those of hundreds for tie alms they may have received. Art. III. In each Parish, a person known to be solvent and worthy of public confidence shall be chosen, and entrusted with the office of Trea- surer, or Depositary of the alms received. This election will be made by the heads of sections who will assemble for that purpose, at the call and un- der the superintendence of the Curate. 8uch per- son (who may be a female) will remain in office as lon^ as the parties interested may think expedient, and he or she willinj^ to serve. And when it be- comes necessary to appoint another in his or her stead, the successor will be chosen in the same manner. All contributions shall be remitted to this person either by the heads of hundreds, or those of sections if there are no hundreds. The Treasurer will be careful to keep an account of the sums received. In the city of Quebec the General Cashier of the Association, of whom men- tion will be hereafter made, will supply the place of such Treasurer. Art. IV. In the course of the rionth of Fe- brviary in each year, the Depositrj ies of Alms of each Parish, will remit them to the Vicar General nearest to their Parish. In the course of the month of March, the Vicar General to whom these alms will have been sent, will remit them with a state- ment of the amount each Parish will have furnished. 9 to thn Ca^sliior in ofl'ico nt Qiic^eo. Tlic Cnnites are requested to assist tlie Trea*!nrors in convey- ing their respective amounts to tl»e Vicar (general. Art. V. The Board thus formed, will choose from amonfr its Members, a President, who will be called the President of the Association, a Vice President, a Secretary and Cashier, and to this latter will be remitted the surn^^ sent to the Vicars General, as by Article IV. Art. VI. This Board will have a self-recruiting power, that is: in case of death or resitynation of one of its Members, the remaininjr Members will supply his place by electing another. Art. VII. Towards the bejrinninof of Anril, in each year, the Board will assemble. In this meet- ing the Bishop of Quebec will make known through the Vicar General, who will also be a Member of the Board, or in his absence, through another person appointed by the Bishop, the wants of each Mis- sion; and at this meeting the distribution of the Alms will be made according to the respective wants of the Missions. Art. VIII. In the course of tlie summer of every year, the Board will draw up a Pieport of the sums confided to it, and such Report will be for- warded to the Curates for Hie information and sa- tisfaction of the Members of the Association, 10 TRAYER Composed by Saint Francis Xaverius, for the convt»rsion of the Heathen, O Eternal God! Creatorof all things, remem- ber that thou al'^ne didst create the souls of infidels, framing them to thy own image and likeness — be- hold, O Lord, how to thy dishonour hell is daily replenished with them: remember, O Lord! that thy only Son Jesus Christ, did sufter for them, most bountifully shedding his precious blood for their redemption: suffer not, O Lord! ihy Son our Sa- viour, to be any longer despised by infidels — but rather, being appeased by the entreaties and prayers of thy Elect, the Saints, and of the Church, the most blessed Spouse of thy Son, vouchsafe to be mindful of thy mercy, and forgetting their idolatry and infidelity, cause them also to know him whom thou didst send, Jesus Christ, thy Son our Lord, who is our salvation life, and resurrection, through whom we are made free and saved; to whom be all glory for ever and ever.
