In support of the prayer of this Memorial, the following facts are submitted :— Oti Monday, November Hth, I received the following telegraphic messaae from S Keefer, Esq., Resident Engineer and S.iper- mtendent G. Stop trains before reaching station, and inforw ihem about bal- last trains. " Upm receiving the last messase, I sent outtwomen -.vith red llags-one man East, to slop No. 1 train, and one man West of station, tc stop No. 2 train. I instructeil both men to stop the trains and inform them ol the position of the gravel trains. No. I train was approaching f-n.m the Kast. Upon enquiring arengine driver, why he did not a/,proach slower! knowing the poMlion of the gravel trams a the slalion, as telegraphed hy me to Mr Keefer, he informed me that he iuiew noth- ing of gravel trains, Mr k'eefer not havin^ mentioned the fact to liim. Mr Keefer was on board the train whioh caused the colli- sion, and knew the position of gravel trains at (.ananoque; yet he did not inform tlie ' engine driver of the circumstance. Had he engine driver been aware of Uie nosi- lion ofgravel trains, tl.e collision would 10 stop the ram. Even had il,e red flag been faOO vards from the end of gravel trai7i, the result must have been the same, .o long as lie engine driver was jgncrant of the position ol the gravel trains.
