 ACTION OF THE POUR NfOOTIATING ' 
 CHURCHES. 
 
 There are four parties interested in 
 lie pending negotiations for Union: 
 ur own Church and the Canada Pres- 
 yterian, in the Provinces of Ontario 
 Vd Quebec, " the Presbyterian Church 
 f the Lower Provinces c " I). N. A.," 
 nd "the Church of Scotland in Nova 
 cotia, Now Brunswick and adjoining 
 rovinces " At the meeting of their 
 sspective Supreme CourtB,hold in 1870, 
 lommittces were severally ap])ointed to 
 onsider the desirableness and j)rao(ica- 
 ility of an organic Union of these 
 illcronl members of the Presbyterian 
 imily. From that time until now Com- 
 littecs on Union liavo beon annually 
 )puinte<l by each of the Cliurches and 
 legreatquostifm itself has.during four 
 oars, furnished the cliii^f toj)ic of (Uh- 
 iission in the various Church Courts,

 said to have reached the tinal stage.

 as the Presbyteries are composed of an 
 equal number of laymen and clergy-

 [At its last meeting the Synod of the 
 Kirk approved of the Basis of Union 
 l)y a vote of eighty-eight to ten.] 
 
 If there was any vote taken in the 
 assembly of the C. P. Church in re- 
 gard to sending the revised Remit down 
 to Presbyteries and Sessions, it has es- 
 caped our notice. In regard to the 
 main question, the assembly was we 
 believe ail but unanimous, the only ox- 
 ])rossed dissent being in regard to the 
 Jiesolution on " modus of worship, " to 
 which exception wis taken by rive 311- 
 nistors and one .I-:ider. Among the mi- 
 nisters were Rev. John McTavish and 
 Jfov. John KosH. The former, it is well 
 known, lias ])ubli('ly nlatod that, al- 
 though ho has not got all he wanted in 
 this Remit, his ojiposition to the Union 
 is at an end. 
 
 It will bo seen fi'oni the subjoined 
 extracts that both the Churches in the 
 Lower Provinces through their rospoc- 
 tivo Synods have approved the liomit, 
 and conHO(iuently the propf)sod Union, 
 without a single dissentient voice. 
 
THE CHURCH OF THE LOWER PRO- 
 VINCES. 
 
 " Union. This was one of the principal sub- 
 jects before the iSynod. Indeed it seemed to 
 overshadow all others. It was found that eight 
 Presbyteries reported in favour of Union last 
 year, and none against. 0:i motion of Pev. J. 
 K. Smith, seconded by Rev. James Sinclair, the 
 following rosoliition jtasscd unanimously : — 
 that this Syno.1 rcjoicLS in the approval of the 
 Remit on Union by all the Presbyteries of th's 
 Church which have reported, waive farther con. 
 sideraticu of it at present, and proceed to hear 
 the delegates appointed by the General A-Ssem- 
 bly of the C. P. Church, to inform us o'' the ac- 
 tion of that Assembly on the subject of Union. 
 Dr. Topp and Rev. Mr. McTavish ihen addressed 
 the Synod, and laid upon the table a copy of the 
 Basis as amended. It was moved by Dr. Waters, 
 seconded by Rev. J. K. Smitli and adopted una- 
 nimously ;— Thnc the Remit be sent down to 
 Presbyteries, in 'ms of the Harrier Act, and tu 
 Sessions and (Jcmgre^ations for their considera- 
 tion and approval, with instruction"? to report to 
 an adjourned meeting of Synod. On motion of 
 Dr. V aters, tlie Synod resolved to e.xpress its 
 gratitude to Almiglity God for the prosperous and 
 happy issue to whicii the negotiations for Union 
 iiuve so fir been brouplit. Tiie Synod then 
 united in prayer. The Synod agreed to api'oint 
 i\ Committee to secure the necessary legislation 
 for tlie proti'ction of Cougregatio lal and other 
 ('luirf'h property after the Union. Tiie Court 
 Hiijourned to meet at New Glasgow on rhe 3rd.

 receive and tabulate answers to tlie Remit on

 Convener. Rev. Mr. McTavisii, one of the de- 
 legates from the General Asaemlily of the C. P. 
 Church, being present, addrestsed the Synod 
 on tliis subject, explaining the changes made in 
 the Kasis of Union. 
 
 After a very full dii»cus!iion, in which moat of 
 the members of Synod took part, tlie following

 cd by Dr. Brooke; That the Synod adhering to its 
 former resolutiouh in favour of Re-union, ro- 
 nolves to take the following stepi towardgils con-

 blyoftheC.P. Church, at their recent meet 
 ings in Ottaw.a, adopted a preamble to ihe Basi;

 sis and accompanying resolutions, this Synoc 
 accepts the said preimble,and assents to the chan 
 ges, approving of the same as eminently satisfac 
 tory to all who are attaclied to the constitutior 
 and to the procedure of the Church of Scotland 
 and this Synod also ap|iroves and accepts th 
 name of ''The PuK.siiYrEH.AN Church in (Janada,' 
 by which ic is propojed that tlie re-united Churcl 
 sliall be called. 
 
 Further, tlie Synod orders that tlie amende' 
 Basis be i)riiited and sent duwn to Presbyterie^ 
 at once, tliat tiiey may, without any delay, as 
 certain tlie minds of their congregations with!

 mouscousent to tlie proposed Re-union, appoint 
 Revs. A. .M. Lean, R. J. Cameron, Thomas Dun 
 ian, J. F. Campbell, and G. M. Grant, as a dt"
