An edition of the Muncey Hymn Book was printed in the year 1842. The old edition is now out of print, and we need a new Hymn Book to aid us in singing the praises of God in the beautiful language of those Hymns. Although the number of the Munceys, or Delawares, for whose use this collection is de- signed, is small, embracing only three Congre- gations in the Dominion of Canada, yet we desire to rejoice with our Brethren of other tribes and nations, while we sing the praises of Grod, in our own language, around our hearthstones and in our Churches. A desire to assist my Native Brethren, — the Muncey and Delaware Indians, — in this part of the worship of God, has led me to undertake this work. |. I\\Z.2.2^\ M PREFACE. A few of these Hymns have been translated by the late Rev. A Luckenbach, Moravian Missionary, who has lived with the Moravian Indians a number of years, at New Fairfield, or Moraviantown, and who was well acquainted with them and their language. The principal part of them, however, have been translated by me, and I hope and pray that they may be made a great blessing to my Indian Brethren. As our white friends occasionally worship with us, it is necessary that the Hymns be printed in English on the opposite pages of this book. Charles Halfmoon. Munceytown, Dec. 4, 1873. -•*■ SOUNDS OF WORDS AND LETTERS m THB MUNCEY LANGUAGE Our words are written with the simple sounds of the English alphabet, so that the English reader may be able to pronounce them. Neither the Munceys nor Delaware* have r or f in their language. When the reader finds r in a syllable in this book, it must be pronounced with a deep, guttural sound, like ihe Gselic or German ch. Vowels are pronounced as follow, viz. : — A long, — as in way, day, say, main. EE long, — ^asin deem, heed, seen, see, jeer. I short, — as in sin, pin, tin, in, ilL O long, — as in noon, moon, spoon, soon. U short, — as in tun, sun, up, pun. Y, — the same sound as yesterday in the English. The following consonants are to be pronounced together, — nh^ ps, wi^ wd, wj^ nw^ mi, nd, rt, x, &c. ENGLISH HYMNS. V il ; EithcHing Sinners to return to God, HYMN 1. To that celestial hill. 2 Beyond the bounds of time and space^ Look forward to that heavenly place, The saints' secure abode : On faith's strong eagle-pinions rise, And force your passage to the skies, And scale the mount of God. 3 Who suffer with our Master here, We shall before his face appear, And by his side sit down : To patient faith the prize is sure ; And all that to the end endure The cross, shall wear the crown. 4 Thrice blessed, bliss-inspiring hope !
