OREIOHTOX, PRINTER. 1857. i i From the Bev. Alexander F. Mitchell, Profeisor of Hebrew, , ,,, St Mary's College, St. Mdrews. St. Andbbws, 27th Fibt., 1857. Mr. John Milne, Preacher of the Oospel, has been well known to me for a number of years, and has always been regarded by me as a young man of auperior talents, extensive acquirements, amiable manners and exemplary con- duct. He passed his Theological Curriculum in St. Mary's College, and in all his classes received the highest commendations for his unremitting application snd distinguished success in the prosecution of his studies. In my own de- partment he always held one of tne highest places among those of bis stand- iDg, and delighted me not less bv his ardour and perseverance, than by his great and rapid progress. He gained several high prizes, and during the last year of his course when I had aim char^ of the Class of Systematic Theology he car- ried off the highest honors in it. By the attainments be then made in the studv of Hebrew, Chaldee and Syriac, he laid a good foundation for more ex- tensive acquirements, and from personal intercourse with him, I have reason to know that he has continued to prosecute with ardour the studies to which he was then addicted and I cannot doubt that he is well qualified to instruct others in them. His minute and accurate acquaintance with Systematic Theology, has supplied him with the best material for useful anu instructive discourses, and BO far as the matter is concerned I have heard few yor.iig men indeed whose discourses were so characterized by sound Theology, accurate thought, elegant composition anu strong masculine sense. I have heard him expound one of the most diflScult texts in the New Testament, and unravel its difficulties with great felicity. When I consider the attainments he has already made in the study of the Original Scriptures and of Systematic Theology — ^the habits of research and application he has formed, and the superior talents he possesses, I cannot doubt that he is well qualified to fill with credit to himself and with benefit toothers, the high office for which he is now a candidate, nor can I hesitate cordially to recommend him to the patrons as worthy of all confidence and encourag»' ment (Signed,) ALEX. Mr. John Milne, Preacher of the Gospel, has been intimately known to me for nearly three years, having ofSciated in the Parish in the capacity of Mis- sionarv both in the Town and Country districts during that period. He came to me highly recommended, and he has conducted himself in a pradentand be- coming manner, maintaining an irreproachable moral character in all respects suitable to his profession. He has had much experience in visiting both among the poor and the labouring classes, who have expressed themselves highly pleased with his kind manner and his religious services. He preaches in a station in the country parish, to whose ministrations the people bear testi- mony, by their regularity in attending worship, and the manner in which they have spoken to me of his polpit duties. He is regularly employed in superin- tending and teaching Sabbath Schools, in which part of his duty he takes much pleasure, and for which he seems to be well fitted. He has officiated occasion- ally in the Parish Church, and his discourses indicate sound sense, an ac- quaintance with human nature, a dear knowledge of the doctrines of the Gos- pel, which are Carried out to their practical purposes, and applied to the busi- ness of life, and these are delivered with that earnestness which is necessary to en- sure the attention of the hearers. He is well informed, well attached to the Church of Scotland and to the cause of religion ; atid from the opportunities 1 have had of knowing him intimately, I have reason to believe that it will be his study to prove a faithful and useful servant of Christ wherever Providence may cast his lot. ROBERTSON. From the BeT. Dr. Bitohie, Minister of Longforgan. LoNOFoaoAN Mahsb, 23rd Mat, 1856. I have known the Reverend John Milne for some time. He came within the boands of our Presbytery recommended by Prof. Mitchell of St. Andrews, and I have had frequent opportunities of marking his conduct, and of hearing of his diligence ana success in his present field of labor. I consider him animated bj nigh principle, and have reason to know that his conduct is marked by the strictest propriety. He possesses a vigorous and active mind and his dis- courses I Deheve, are both able and instructive, whilst he has been most faith- iol in his ministrations from house to house — ^Hr. Milne has officiated several times for me, though I have not had the satisfaction of hearing him. But from all that I know or have heard concerning him, I have no hesitation in express- ing my firm pers'iasion that he will ever prove himself to be an able and use- fiu servant of Christ. (Signed,) WILLIAM RITCHIE, D. D., Minister of Longforgan. From the Bot. Bobert Stevenson, A. M., Minister of Forfar. Mansb or FoBPAR, Apbil 8th, 1857. The Revd. John Milne at present Assistant to the Revd. Dr. Adie of Dun- dee, has been well known to me for the last thirteen years. He is a native of Fomr, and has uniformly conducted himself so as to secure respect and es- teem. He is possessed of undoubted natural talent, his general scholarship is of a high order, and he has devoted particular attention to the study of He- brew, so much so that his firiends best qualified to form an opinion as to this matter, have brought him forward as a candidate for the vacant office of Profes- aor of Hebrew in Queen's College, Canada. I cannot doubt that Mr. Milne, if appointed to this honorable and respectable charge, will continue to evince in the wider sphere of duty and influence opened np to him, the same estimable qualities by wnich hitherto he has been charac- teriied ; and will uphold and raise the standard of Biblical learning among the aspirants to the office of the D*inistry in Canada. Without any reservation or qualification then, I have the pleasure of concurring in the recommendation of Hr. Milne as every way initable, eo &r its I can judge, for filling the vacant Pro- fessorship. (Signed,) ROBERT STEVENSON, A. M., Minister of Forftr. i 6 From the R«v. William Allan, H. I consider him eminently qualified for such an appointment at that to which he now aspires. Mr. Milne possesses superior natural endowments which hare been most t» sidously cultivated. I know that he is most conscientious and faithful in the discharge of every duty which he undertakes. Ue is a person of irreproachable moral character and obliging disposition. Seeing that nis heart is in big work, and that he has bestowed special attention on studies connected with the sub- ject of Scripture interpretation, I cannot doubt that success would, under the blessing ofGod, attend his exertions. This is to certify that Mr Milne has held the situation of Assistant Classical and Mathematical Teacher in my School for the last twelve months, during which time his uniform good conduct merited my highest commendation.
