II. As the errors which take place in furveying are often occafioned by
bad chaining, you are to be particularly careful in the choice, and conftant*
ly attentive to the conduct, of your chain-bearers; whom you are likewife
to caufe to be fwom for the faithful difcharge of their duty previous to the
commencement of your work. You will alfo be careful in directing them
to carry their chain as level as pofiTible in going up and down hills : the
hindermoft man holding up his end of the chain perpendicularly over the ftick
in goine up hills, and the foremoft man holding up his end of the chain in
I' going £)wn hills, and placing the (lick where it (hall firft (Irike the ground
on being dropped perpendicularly from the extremity of the chain, to the
end that the horizontal diftance may be always noted in your field-book ;
