PRAYERS OF THE SOCIETY. BEFORE THBY COMMENCE BUSINESS. Przvknt us, O Lord, in all our doings, with Thy most gracious favour ; and further us with Thy continual help ; that in all our works, begun, continued, and ended in Thee, we may glorify Thy holy name, and finally, by Thy mercy, obtain everlasting life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. — Amen. O God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all works of piety and charity do proceed, we beseech Theo to visit with Thy favour our Sovereign Lady Q.ueen Victoria, and BO rule her heart, that she may in all things seek Thy honor and glory. Prosper with Thy blessing the designs of this Society. Comfort with Thy grace those benefactors who contribute to its support. Blestf the ministry of Thy servants, the Cleigy ; the endeavours of all who are engaged in spreading the knowledge of true religion in the dominions of our Sovereign, and the labours of those Missionaries who are promoting the same in this Pro- vince. And may Thy Holy Spirit direct all our consultations to the advancement of Thy glory, and the good of Thy Church, through Jesus Christ our Lord. — Amen. ^ O Merciful God, who hast made all men, and hatest nothing that Thou hast made, nor wouldest the death of a sinner, but that he should be converted and live : Have mercy upon all Jews, Turks, Infidels, and Heretics, and take from them all ignorance, hardness of heart, and contempt of Thy Word -, and so fetch them home, blessed Lord, to Thy flock, that they may be saved among the remnant of the true Israelites, and be made one fold under one Shepherd, Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reignetb witli Thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. — Amen. Our Father, which art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy. will be done in earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil ; For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. — Amen. WHEN THE BUSINESS IS ENDED. ' ' The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and tlie love of God, apd the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all, evermore. — Amen. ' " ' T^ REPORT. 1 further us n Thee, we ough Jeius and charity sn Victoria, rosper with factorB who endeavours nions of our in this Pro- lent of Thy t made, nor mercy upon iss of heart, ;, that they under one ioly Spirit, sine. Thy. forgive us jtemptation, f, for ever 'the Holy We are again met together, as members of a Society formed to maintain and extend the Church of Christ. This should give a solemn tone to all our proceedings. The present is an age remarkable for combinations for various temporal objects^ •—we profess to be nnited to advance the eternal interests of our fellow men. If success in the least degree attends such an effort, the object gained far outweighs in importance the highest earthly attainment for which the greatest zeal and energy are combined. It is an amazing thought,'— but in car* rying on the work of this Society we may be fellow-helper» with Him " to whom all power in heaven and in earth is com- mitted." In such a cause the wisest and the best of men have not counted their own lives too dear. But enormous is the work we have undertaken— to afford the means by which the spiritual destitution in this vast Diocese may be relieved. Depending on our own efforts, or the help of man, the very attempt would be hopeless ; but " if God be for us who can be against us ?" Let the members of the Church unite sincerely and heartily in the work, and faith and hope will crown it with success. A two fold blessing upon our labours may bo looked for, and has, we trust, already been afforded. In imparting to others the means of salvation, the Church has herself gained strength. By our frequent meetings her members hold more communion with one another ; many are " ready to give and glad to dis- tribute," who otherwise might never " have laid by in store a good foundation ;" the laity take their part in the work, and the hands of the Clergy are strengthened by their sympathy and co-operation. The Society is this year called to mourn over the departure of one of its earliest and most steadfast friends. Wheresoever its members meet, or its funds are expended, the memory of the Honorable Ward Chipman, late Chief Justice of New Brunswick, will be cherished with gratitude. Ever one of the most generous contributors to the Society, by his large bequest to further its objects we see how one of unquestioned piety and sound judgment estimated the work in which we are engaged. 2 i il 10 From the returns of the Local Committees, of which the following is an abstract, we shall find a favourable report of the funds of the Society for the present year, and an increas- ing interest in its prosperity. St. Andrews. — Rev. J. Alley, D. D., writes, that the amount of contributions fronni this Committee are not quite as large as last year. Not, he adds, but the same good feeling exists towards the Society as heretofore amongst the members of the Church, but their ability to aid its objects does not keep pace with their will. Dr. Alley regreu, that owing to the severity of the season, he cannot venture on so long a journey to attend the meeting. " I have laboured," he writes, " in the Colonial Church for thirty three years, and feel mortiiied at being, under present regulations, compelled to absent myself."— Contributions, JL16 19; Ist Collection, 22d June 1851, £262: Snd do. 14th Dec, £1 16 9 : Total, general pur- poses, jESO 4 8. Campo BELLO.-^Rev. J. Alley, D. D., has made the collections in this place, and remitted to the Treasurer, through Capt. Robinson, the sum of £4 ISs. for general purposes. The Committee request the usual grant of Books and Tracts. Greenwich and Petersville. — Rev. J. Bartholomew writes, that this Local Gomr- mittee beg to renew their former expressions of giatitude for the continued liberality of the Society towards that Mission. They cannot but hope that the services of the Church having been kept up at the different stations daring the year, the Divine blessing has attended tho laDours of the Missionary. A Confirmation was held m the Parish Church of Greenwich in August last, when twenty three young persons ratified their baptismal vows, five of whom afterwards received tlie holy dommunion. A similar number had been prepared for confirmation in Petersville, but the severe indisposition of the Bishop caused its postponement. The Committee are gratified to report the commencement of a new Church in the Douglas Valley, which afibrds promise of being extensively useful. This work originated with Dr. R. Bayard and other gentlemen in the neighbourhood. The frame is already erected on a substantial stone foundation. The nave is 46 by 24 feet, with a capacious chancel. It is cal- culated to hold 350 persons, and the seats will be entirely free. The people in the vicinity have contributed in good proportion to tlieir means, and through the zeal of Dr. Bayard aid has been procured m other (quarters. The land on which the Church is built has been legally transferred. As much is yet required to complete the work, the Committee earnestly amieit as large a grant as the SocieQr can bestow. Chatham. — Rev. Samuel Bacon, on behalf of the Chatham Local Committee, reports that their nnual maeetin? was held after morning praver iu Saint Paul's Church on the 22nd December 1850, when it was unanimously resolved, that this Committee return humble and hearty thanks to Almighty God for the munificent sum bequeathed by the late Chief Justice Chipman toward the augmentation of the funds of the Diocesan Church Society, which is an evident proof of the high estimation in which this wise and benevolent man held the Institution, aTwl which moreover this Committee cannot help viewing as an earnest of its future prosperity. It is their earnest prayer that others may be thus stimulated to imitate th^ liberality of this great and good n:an, and that the Society may become (under the Divine blessing) what this Committee have ever anticipated, the main support of the Church in this Colony. The Committee also return thanks for the grant of books, vhich have proved a valuable acquisition to their Sunday School Library. Contributions for general purposes, £l7 8 5 : 1st semi-annual Sermon, £5 ISs. : 2ud do. £2 Ss. : Total, £25 8 5. Harvey and Hopewell. — Rev. C. P. Bliss, in forwarding the returns from this Mission^ regrets that the amount is not larger, which he states to be owing to calls upon the members of the congregation, who are but poorly blessed with this world's goods, to finish their Church. The Churcn at Harvey, it appears, is very nearly finished. He hopes soon to have ser- vice in it. The small Church at New Ireland was consecrated last summer, and is attended by an orderly and devout congregation, who highly value the privilege of worshipping there- in. To both these Churches the Society's aid has been kindly afibrded. The Mil^8iona^y encloses an application of the Local Committee at Hopewell, for aid to- wards the erection of a Church in that place; and also the following Resolution — "That as in the opinion of this Committee, in consequence of the Mining operations now carried on in this part of the County, the population will necessarily increase, the consideration of 11 > mutate i Divine in thia aluable- 17 8 5 : IiSBionr ember* /burch. ve ser- :tended there- the Society be called to the immediate necessity of another Missionary being sent to this County." A further supply of books is also requested. Contributions are as tallows-:— Harvey, £7 16: Hopewell, £4 11 3: Total, £12 9 3. MoMCTOH. — ReT. W. N. Boyer encloses a list of subscribers, and collections in this Mission, and writes, that a vote of grateful thanks to th^ Society for its aid in erecting the C/hurch, and towards the support of the Missionarv, was passea by that Local Committee. The Missionary adds, that tne 'Church is so far advanced as to enable him (D. V.) to hold Divine Worship in it on Easter Day, which will be to himself and many otners who have -so long been deprived of the privilege of worshipping in a consecrated building, an event deeplv interesting. " I trust," he says, " that die nand of a good Gh>d which has brought us hitnerto, and enabled us to progress so far in the erection of a house of worship to himself, will still be with us, and enable us to appreciate our privilege, not with lip service, but by « holy and consistent life." The number of subscribers to the Diocesan Church Society, he continues, has increased. His congresations are large and regular. Much of prejudice against the Church has died away, and her holy scriptural forms of prayer begin to be appreciated. Persons formerly opposed to it, now are seen constantly to use the Prayer Book. Several Church families have lately come to reside at Moncton, and the Missionary doubts not, as the place is increas- ing, his congregation will continue to increase also. Though difficulties of course exist, he feels much encouraged, as there is enough to warrant the Church " to go on and take courage." It would, ere this, have been completed, had not a difficulty arisen between the Guilder and the Committee S pointed to superintend die work. The Mis- sionary adds, " Though our number here is stdl but small, it has been increased considerably darins the past year, and there is certainly every reason to believe, that the Gkand Falls must become a place of considerable importance. The beneficial effects, therefore, from the regular services of the Church, can scarcely be overrated, and as we become more able, I trust we will be more willing to supply our wants in these respects." He further adds, that dnriag the past year he has resiaed at the Grand Falls, going every third Sunday to the Churches at the Tobique and Biver des Chutes, (22 and 32 miles, respectively, below the Grand Falls,] at the same time visiting a station further down the River : occasionally also he has extencied his visits to the mouth of the Saint Francis, 70 miles up the River. These distant services, though occupying much time, cannot well be discontinued until more labourers are sent to that destitute portion of the Diocese. Hudson, Visiting Missionary on the Miramichi, writes, that owing to le siurmy weather, and the consequent difficulty of travelling, the usual meeting of the Glenelg Committee was not held until the XOtli of January, when the following Resolution w<(s unanimously passed t — ^^at the BMinifioent bequest of £10,000 made for the pious and charitable uses of the Diocesan Church Society by the late Hon. Ward Chipman, formerly Chief Justice of this Province, should serve as an excellent example for all other true-hearted sons of the Church of Bn^land, to bequeath in their Wills " according to that they have," towards the manifold necessities of their own spiritual mother and her numble handmaiden in this Diocese — the Church Society. In transmitting last year's Report, the Visiting Missionary was obliged to express a doubt, whether he should be able without an hdp-meet to dress and keep the once fallow ground, wbldli, through the Divine blessing, he has now succeeded in partially breaking up. ^ut he is stiU at his post, and is still Unfriended and unassisted in his oilentimes arauous labour, except by the occasional gratuitous services of an aged lay reader at Glenelg. Ajiother Missionary is now much wanted in this County, but means for his support are also required t God grant that both may soon be fouud! But notwithstanding all his difficulties and discouragements, the Missionary is somewhat cheered in being able to add, that during the past year, the generally poor people of this district, without any special solicitation, have made soine increase to their usual contributiona for the good work/ofthe Church Society. MART'8.-^Ilev. W. He writes, that in the various stations in which Divine service is held, the attendance con* tinues regular, and the congregations appear to value this privilege more than formerly. The Missionary still visits Stanley once a month. He has had forty baptisms during the year ; and twelve persons, some of whom were not before in communion with the Church, were confirmed last summer, at a new Church near the Nashwaak, whieh has been erected without aid from the Society. That we thank the Society for the grant of books, and request this year a separate appropriation for the sister Church at Pennfield. The following Resolution was also passed :— " That the niunincent bequest of £lO,0OO to the Diocesan Church Society by the late lamented the Hon. Mr. Robertson, in remitting the contributions, which exceed those of the past year, urges upon the General Committee his implication for aid in building the chancel to his Church, and begs to assure the Committee, tnat although large sums have been appropriated to the Church in his Mission, the eeneral attendance at the four different Churcnes, two of which are opened every Lord's day for Divine service, the great improvement in the people generally, and their willingness to contribute, to the utmost of their ability, to any religions object, prove that they appreciate the blessings of the Gospel under an authorieed Ministry. That this Committee are highly gratified to witness the renewed exertioi^s manifested in all parts of the Diocese, in forwarding the work of diis Society, so highly necessary to its prosperity. 2. That they would express their deep gratitude to Almighty God for the munificent bequest of the late much revered Chief Justice Chipman, which has cheered the hearts and strengthened the hands of all Gfattrchmea in the Province. ~ 3. Wool>sTOCK. — The annual meeting of this Committee was held at St Luke's Church on the 2Vth December, when it was resolved— 1. That while the success attending the efforts of the Society is cause of deep thankfulness to God, this Committee are conscious that tho increasing wants of the Church demand from her members strong«nd united endeavours to give assurance of the continuance of the Divine blessing, without which all human exertions are vain. 8. That while this Committee join in the public regret at the loss sustained by the Church in the decease of the late Venerable Chief Justice Chipman, they cannot but feel lively gratitude at learning of his most munificent bequest to this Society, and this Committ«ie humbly pray that the Almighty disposer of events may put it into the hearts of others to follow so good an example. 3. That whereas in consequence of the removal of the Rev. E. A. Wam^ford, (whose zealous services as Curate in this Mission during a year and nine months deserves special acknowledgment,) the charge of the Parish with a population of 4,000 souls, and the adjoining districts, have again devolved upon the Rector alone, who even with the most strenuous exertions, can but inadequately supply the spiritual wants of those committed to his care ; therefore resolved, that this Committee urge bpon the Society the necessity of a more ample prdvision towards the support of ^ Curate ; every effort having failed to obtain the full sum of £50 heretofore required, by subscription ; the people in the out-districts for whom the services of a Curate are more particularly required, and who are therefore expected to con- tribute the requisite amount, nnd it difficult to do so with the many other culs upon their limited means. That this Committee take this opportunity of expressing their sincere regard for the memory of the Hon. Ward Chipman, who was distinguished, not only in his peculiar pro- fession, but for his unostentatious exhibition, in an elevated station, of firm religious principle and pure moral character, having been a consistent Churchman, and an early ioA tned 15 for the iar pro- irincipla td tried friend of our Church Society, towards the support of which he contributed while he Hred, by his counsel, his influence, his alms, and his prayers, and provided for its welfare after his death by leaving it a munificent bequest. That this Committee recognize in his death a call upon thf> surviving Churchmen in this Province, in whatever station they may be, to emulate his goou examplt:, by co-operating witlrour Church Society ; affording it an united, firm and steady support in carrying on it* holy work. 3. That this Committee, sensible that the prosperity of the Church in this Parish is mainly owing, under God, to the Society for the propagation of tlie Oospel, (which is celebrating this year its third jubilee,) heartily unite m thankfulness to Almighty God for the success which he has vouchsafed to that great Parent Institution, in the varied and extensive fielda in which it has now laboured for ISO years, and call upon the parishioneis to contribute liberally in aid of our own Society, which is endeavouring to carry on the work in this Province which the Parent Society began among us. SkefHngton Thomson, L.L.D., regrets that his state of health renders it inexpedient to attend the meeting of the Society. He reports that the Local Committee met on St. Stephen's Day, and passed a number of Resolutions expressive of its continued confidence in tne Society, as an efficient and faithful instrument for diffusing the principles of the Church throughout the Province. A most interesting Address was on this occasion delivered by the Rev. Mr. Duvell, of Calais, which was listened to with marked attention. Contributions reported by N. He reports the high estimation in which the Socie^ is held among his people, evidenced by their ready willingness to contribute to its funds. They are most anxious to build a new (Jhurch on a more convenient site than that of the present di- lapidated building, and trust the Society will lend its aid. A severe attack of illness pre- vented his attendance at the meetings. Norton. — Rev. E. A. Wameford writes, that the meeting of this Local Committee was held in the early part of December, when he was requested to thank the Society for the grant of books, and to request a further supply, as the two Libraries are very small and do not half meet the demand. They also request a grant in aid of building a Parsonage, which the parishioners hope to complete in the ensuing summer, two of whom have generously B'ven to the Church five acres of the best land for a site. Wetmore encloses an increased list of subscribers, and thinks that it will be even greater next year, as the people are taking more interest in the Society, and val"e the privilege of the Library more. They are thus enabled to read works which they have no other means of procuring, and he trusts they benefit by the perusal. Contri- butions amount for general purposes to £9. Q.VEENSBURT. — Rev. H. W. Tippett writes, that his parishioners entertain feelings of confidence in the Society and gratitude for the assistance it has rendered them, and that they have cheerfully given to it according to their ability. He is also happy to say, that the attend- ance upon the public services of the Church suffer no diminution, althougn in three out of four stations in which thev are held, the inconvenience and disadvantage exist of meeting in private houses. He writes, that he dwells in peace among his people, who with scarcely an exception pay in farm produce the amounts they severally promise. " The Society probably remembers," the Missionary adds, " that this Parish has only lately ^fter many years of neglect) had the services of a settled Clergyman, and that the num* ber of families in nominal eommunion with the Church does not exceed thirty. These are ao scattered that it is impossible to collect them together in less than four stations for public- worship : three of them have been regularly occupied, the fourth only occasionally ; but I hope, as appearances there are more promising than they have hilh?rto been, when the spring opens, to take it periodically every fortnight." 16 He reports that the Chnrch at the lower end of the Parish, towards which a grant of £tfi lOs. was made bv the Society, is ready for plutering, and if the Society will gram the sum of £iO towards its completion, it will oe ready for consecration next summer. Walker regrets that owing to illnezs the subscriptions in this Mission were not made at an earlier day. He reports contributions in all to the amount of £24 15 3 J, of which £4 is limited to the Widows and Orphans fund. Watxrborodoh. — Rev. A. Wood reports contributions to the amount of 18s. ; in addition to which further contributions are reported from the congregation of St. James Church at the Jemaeg, amounting to the sum of £20 11 3, and a Collection at the Jubilee Sermon on Trinity Sunday of £1 17 10, making in all from this Parish, £24 5 1, of which £5 11 3 is limited to Books and Tracts. The Committee at the Jemseg earnestly solicit a grant of books. The whole amount of contributions to the various objects of the Society thus reported, are as follows : — For Missionary visits, £1 8s ; Sunday and other Schools, £1 ; Books and Tracts, £21 16 3 ; Churches and Chapels, J^l 3 6i ; Widows and Orphans Fund, je42 15 61; General purposes, je958 14 10: Total, £1026 18 2. It will be seen by comparing the fore- going: returns with those of the previous year, that from by far the greater number of the Local (/ommittees an increased amount of contributions has been reported. « Surely it is matter of thankfulness, that notwithstanding many difficulties, and the small means of its members generally, the amount of oiferings to the Society is so large. And our great hope may be, that as the claims of the Society are made fully known to each member of the Church, — the duty and advantage of supporting it, — all those at least who p»ay for the peace and prosperity of Zion will more and more unite in their prayers and their offerings. At one of the earliest meetings of the Society, the Venerable the Archdeacon thus set forth its claims : — " We propose to send preachers of the everlasting Gospel into the destitute places of the land : We propose to give aid to Sunday and other Schools in which Church principles — principles highly favourable, we trust, to vital religion — are taught : We pro- pose to circulate books, among which the chief place will ever be allotted to the Sacred Scriptures, and the Prayer Book of the Church of England ; and we propose to provide buildings in which God may be worshipped after the manner of our fathers, and the people instructed according to His Holy Word." — For such objects, fourteen years ago, the Arch- deacon claimed the support and prayers of Churchmen. We this day bear witness that his appeal was not made in vain. 17 '*^'y ^i-i . '■> I r PSOGEEDIKOS OF THE GENERAL COIIITTEE. , ..;>h in Frederictottt February 10, 1852. A Compendium, or Summary Btatcmcnt of iho Constitution, Bye Laws, ObjecU, Purpoaet and Proceedings of the Diocesan Church Society of New Brunswick, 1859. The Diocesan Church Society of New Brunswick held its first meeting at Fredericton, February 9, 1837. Previous to that day there had been several Meetings of the Clergy of the Provmce, the first of them in 1832, in which a very decided opinion had been repeatedly expressed in favour of " an active union among the Members of the Church, both lay and clerical, for the promotion of such objects as the Church, wherever it exists, mubtfind essen- tial to its welfare and utility." On September 3th, 1836, they again assembled at Freder- icton, on the invitation of tne Archdeacon, for the consideration of a plan proposed by the late respected Bishop of Nova Scotia, for the formation of "a Church Society m each of the Archdeaconries of his Diocese, to embrace all the objects of the Societies in England for the Propagation of the Gospel and for Promoting Christian Knowledge." At this meeting the Clergy formed the Society recommended by the Bishop, having agreed upon a Consti- tution, vvhich was ratified and confirmed at the first meeting of the Society. The following is a brief description of the composition offhe Society, and of the different Committees, by whose agency its work is carried ont. I. Thk Society. The Society (by Rule III. of its Constitution) is composed of persons presumed to be members of the United Church of England and Ireland, who at any one time have paid a sum of not less than ten pounds to the Society, and by reason of such payment, are consti- tuted Life Members; and also of such as pay to it annually any sum, however small. This sum (by Resolution 1838) is declared to oe due at the Annual Meeting. The Society (by Rule XII.) holds an Anniversary Meeting at Fredericton and St. John alternated, — at the latter place on the Thursday after the tnird Tuesday in January, and at the former place on the Thursday after the second Tuesday in February. At this meeting the elec- tion of the dfficw-s of the Society takes place. T^he oflScers elected annually (try Rule IV.| are " one or more Treasurers, one or more Secretaries, and two Auditors o(^ Accounts.' The Executive Committee is also elected at this time : and all motions are disposed of for effecting alterations in the Constitution. It is necessary (by Rule XVIII.) that notice of any motion for effecting such alteration should be given at the General Meeting previous to the one at which such motion is to be made ; and no article of the Constitution can be altered, except with the concurrence of two thirds of the Members present. And (by Rule II.) every alteration in the Constitution, before it becomes of any force, must be sanctioned and confirmed by the Bishop, by writing under his hand. Special General Meetings are called by the Bishop, as President, upon autliority given to him, for that purpose, by the Society, at an Anniversary Meeting. II. The General Committee. The General Committee of the Society is composed of Clergy and Lay Deputies. The Lay Deputies consist (by Rule XIV.) of two Members of the Society elected by each Local Committee, at the annual meeting of such Committee. These Clergymen and Lay Deputies (by Rule XV.) meet in General Committee on the two days (or more if need be) immediately preceding the Anniversary Meeting. In this General Committee, all appli' cations for aid out of the funds of the Society are considered and disposed of; and all grants of money made ; all accounts passed ; and in general all business transacted, in any way connected with the administration of the T^-ids of the Society. The powers of the Lay Deputies (by Resolution 1837) are verified by a certificate under the hand of the Secretary of the Committee deputing, in form following, viz : — "This is to certify that A. B. and CD. were elected at the Annual Meeting of the — — Committee of the Diocesan Church Society, as Deputies from that Committee, under the authority of Arti- cle of the Constitution. (Signed) E. F., Secretary." Dated 18 — . In all cases of irregularity in the form, substance or mode of execution of the certificate, a vote of the General Committee is requisite to give effect to the appoiiitment. III. The Local Committees. The Local Committees consist of all Members of the Society, residing in the several Parishes throughout the Diocese. They hold respectively an annual meeting (by Rule XIII.) on some convenient day previous to the Anniversary Meeting of the Society, at which annual meeting they elect tvvo Lay Deputies from that Committee to the General Committee ; and determine what objects they will recommend to the special consideration of the General Committee, in the appropriation of the funds of the Society, — it being compe- tent (by Rule IX.) to any Member of the Society to limit his subscription to any one or more or the Society's objects, which he may be niost anxious to promote. f the diiferent le certificate, Tlio Clergy (bv Rule XVTl.) are requesleti to prearh annually two Sermons in their reopoctive Cnurclios, on behalf of the Society, had to take up a collection on each occasion for its general purposes. IV. The Exr.cuTivg Co.mmittkk. The Kxecutivo Committee (by Rules IV. and V.) consists of the President, the Vice Presidents, the Treasurer, the Secretary, the Auditors, the Clerpy of the Diocese, and twenty four Lay Members of it, being eitlier Life Members or subtcnbers of at least one pound to the funds of the Society, and annually elected at the Anniversary 'Meeting. This Committee has a Secretary elected at the same meeting. It meets at Frcdericton and St. Jol.n alter- nately on the following days, viz. the first Wednesday in January ; the day after the Annual Meeting ; the first Wednesdny in March j the first Wednesday in June ; and on the Wednes- day after the first Tuesday m October. By this Committee all business of an executive character is tranbocted, except such as is specifically committed to the General Committee. V. The Depository Committees. There are two Depositories for the Hooks imported by the Society, for sale and distribu- tion — ont! at Fredericton, the other at St. John. Eadi of them is managed by a Committee, elected by the Executive Committee out of its own body, usually nt the meeting which occurs on the day after the Anniversary Meeting. Each has its own Chairman and Secre- tary. Regulations are from time to time prescribed to these Committees by the Executive Committee, in addition to those contained in the Constitution. The Books and Tracts to be supplied (by Rule VI.) nre to be in strict uniformity with the principles of the Established Church, and (by Rule VIII.) none ore to be imported or circulated, which are not in the Catalogue of the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, epccept such as the Bishop shall approve, — such opproval (by Resolution of the Executive Committee 1849) to be manifested only by his Lordship s signature. Additional regulations were ordered by the Executive Committee, March 6, 1850. (See 15th Repurt, page 25.) VI. The Loan Committee. The Loan Committee is also a Committee elected at the first meeting o'' the Executive Committee, which occurs after the Anniversary Meeting, and out of that body. It is the duty of the Committee to eflect proper investments of the Society's funds ; in the performance of which duty, the members of it are guided by instructions i'rom the Executive Committee. Regulations were enacted for their guidance, June 7, 1848. (See 13th Report, page 19.) VII. The Officebs of the Society. The respective Lieutenant Governors of the Province in succession, since the formation of the Society, viz. Sir Archibald Campbell, Sir John Harvey, Sir William M. G. Cole- brooke, and Sir Edmund W. Head, have been severally pleosed to accept the office of Patron of the Society. The Lord Bishop of the Diocese (by Rule IV.) is declared to be the President of the Society. The Archdeacon of the Province (by the same Rule) is declared its first Vice President, and (by Resolution 1837) there were nominated as Vice Presidents — being members of the Society — the Chief Justice, the Members of the Legislative and Executive Councils, the Speaker, the Judges of the Supieme Court ; (by Resolution 1838) the Attorney and Solicitor General; (by Resolution 1841) the Master of the Rolls; and (by Resolution 1852) Erederick A. Wiggins, Esq. was elected in the room of the late Wm. Scovil, Esq. The Treas'irer, the Secretary, the Secretary of the Executive Committee, and the Audi- tors, are, as before stated, annually elected at the Anniversary Meeting. VIII. The objects of the Society, The objects embraced by the Society are (by Rule VI.) the following, and none other : — 1. Missionary Visits to places where there is no settled Clergyman, and aid to new and poor Missions. 2. The establishment of Divinity Scholarships at King's College, Fredericton; and assis- tance, when necessary, to those who may be under preparation tor the Ministry, especially sons of Clergymen. 3. Aid to Sunday and other Schools in which Church principles are taught, and the training and encouraging of Schoolmasters and Catechists. 4. The supply of Books and Tracts in strict conformity with the principles of the Esta- blished Church. 5. Aid to the building and enlarging of Churches and Chapels. 6. Aid to the building of Parsonage Houses. 7. The creation of a fund towards the augmentation of the stipends of Clergymen who are poor ; and towards the education of the children of such Clergymen ; and towards the making a provision for those who may be incapacitated by age or infirmity, 8. Tlie creation of a fund for the Widows and Orphans of the Clergy, 64 I li'i IX. Thi pnocimiNos or THi SociriT— at to 1. Missionary Visits. For cnrrying out this moRt important ohject, tho General Committeo makes a large annual grant. The number of such Clergymen is at present thirteen. The amount of capital funded bv the Society for this object is, with interest, very neorlv £400 : and it is to this object tuat the munificent legacy of £10,000, recently bequcmthea to the Society in reversion, by tlie late Chief Justice Chipmon, is dedicated by his Will. For Missionary purpones the Society has already expended the large sum of £3,888. 2. Divinity Scholarships. The sum funded fur this object, with the interest which has accumulated upon it, is X60. 3. Schools. 4. Books. These two objects have been hitherto to a great extent united, the aid afforded by the Society to Schools bci?ii; aliiinst invariably in tlie shape of Books. The Books imported by the Society consist of Bibles, Testaments, Prayer Books, and the publications of the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, together with such other works as may be selected by the Depository Committees, nnd opproved by the Bishop of the Diocese. A grant of Books is made every year to each of the ijocal Committees of tho Society, and a stock is constantly kept on hand for sale at the Society's Depositories at Fredericton and Saint John. The value of the Books already imported by the Society exceeds £8,800. .'). Churches. Since it commenced operations, the Society, at an expense of very nearly i!l,600, has by its grants aided in the erection of no less than 49 Churches in different parts of the Diocese, and in the enlargement of 8 others : making a total of 57 Churches and Chapels built or enlarged. 6. Parsonage Houses. At an expense of upwards of £300, the Society has assisted in the erection of 10 Parsonage Houses in the Diocese. 7. Aged Clergy Fund. 6. Widows and Orphans' Fund. The amount of the Society's capital funded for these two objects, till lately united, with the interest thereon, is nearly £700, the General Committee having mode a grant to the Fund every year since the formation of it in 1846. Out of the interest which has accrued, allowances have already been made to the Widows of three deceased Clergymen. All grants by this Society (by Resolution 1841) for any purpose whatever, become void if not claimed within three years from their dates respectively. The Clergy arc respectfully reminded that the month of October has been considered the most suitable time for the second semiannual Sermon and Collection in behalf of the Society. As the next Anniversary Meeting will take place in January, it is of the greatest impor- tance that the annual returns should be in the hands of the Treasurer, and the Reports of the ;( 1 ; 1 I several Local Committees in those of the Secretary, on or before the 3l8t December, agree- , ,l{\ I j ably to a standing Rule of the Society. Much trouble and inconvenience having arisen from the want of a little care in making up the Subscription Lists forwarded to the Secretary, and as mistakes may in consequence have arisen, for which neither he nor the Printer are finally responsible, it is particularly requested that in future the lists may be furnished exactly as it is wished they should be printed, and arranged in alphabetical order. A large supply of Books, consisting of Bibles, New Testaments, Church Services, Com- mon Prayer, and a general selection from the Catalogue of the Society for Promoting Chris- tian Knowledge, has lately arrived from England, and are for sale at the Society's Depo- sitories in Saint John and Fredericton.
