The object of this little work is to fur- nish a guide to the study of the Bible, in daily portions, so arranged that^ the whole may be ^one through w^Ith in a year. Instead of following the order of the books as printed in the Bible, the lessons are arranged with a view to the historical and prophetic order of Scrip- ture events. The tiist column of each page con- tains the days of the month ; and the other three columns the chapters or ver- ses to be studied on the days opposite to which they are j)nnted. ^ ^" ■ i i M ii ft/?/5V 1 n ir{no , Am erac} none negle the B ing si ings c ble, 1 doset Scripl who i rando denc€ seasoi face ( never that e own -s eonso! of pe; all th( He the S earner of the each beami own. I^or is it enough that the Scriptures be our daily coni])anion. lie who is accustomed to open his Bible at random; trusting to chance, or Provi- dence, to send iiim *^ a portion in due season,'' will rarely dig beneath the sur- face of obvions truth, and hence will never find the hidden gems fjf wisdom that enrich the intellect with lleaven-s own wealth ; those deep well-spiings of consolation which pour their blessed tide of peace and joy unspeakable, through all the channels of the believing soul. He w4io would find these, must search the Scriptures, regularly, connectedly, earnestly, and believingly. To the eye of the humble student of God's Word, each doctrine, precept and promise, beams with a sacred brightness of its own. Yet when these are examined hi m jgg^^ ^ INTRODUCTION. their connexion with each other, their force and beauty are increased an hun- dred fold ; as in the ^^ Jew's famed ora- cle of gems,'' each jewel was strangely beautiful, but only when viewed togeth^ cr, in the golden settings which the hand of Jehovah had fashioned for them, did they glow with unearthly lustre, be- tokening the gracious presence of the King of Kings. Take this simple directory as your puide ; go to the Bible. Search it as diligently as if success depended on your efforts ; and look upward as ear- nestly for God's promised blessing as if those efforts were utterly useless. ^ It shall be a lamp to your feet, and a light to your path, still brightening as the clouds of earthly sorrow gather black- ness around your advancing steps, till it is lost in the brightness of eternal day.
