W. L. KINMOND & Co., 393 St Paul St., Montreal, Que. WE KEEP A GOOD ASSORTMENT ON HAND WHICH WE SELL. AT MANUFACTURERS' PRICES — FREIGHT AND DUTIES ADDED. « ♦ « TO PABTIES BUILDING- AND VSlffQ Sl'EAM ENGhXNEa With a new price list, and inipiovecl construction, we respectfully call the attention of Steam Engine Builders and Engineers in the Provinces, to this superior Regulator of the Speed of Steam Engines. This Machine i.icludes the Governor and Governor Valve, and Stop Valve if required. These governors are easily attached to any stylo of engines, and will produce almost perfect speed when the engine is laboring against extremely sudden and variable resistance. They are considered almost invaluable by parties who have used all other governors, the best of which are only governors in name. There are also many imitations of the Judson Governor in use, but they are very imperfect, and made without due consideration of the new principle involved and discovered by the patentee, (without which no engine can be even tolerably well governed,) and which is one of the causes of our success. Other governors are made without regard to and entirely ignoring this principle, hence governors heretofore have been the most useless part of the Steam Engine ; but we make it the mos*- perfect and useful. We have, however, sold shop-rights to Engine Builders to manufacture them, but without special preparation for their m.anufacture, beyond what an engine shop affords, they become failures, for the reason that a governor cannot exert more than two pounds force for a forty horse engine ; if more force, too much variation occurs. Ten ounces of friction in the governor would produce ten or fifteen horse variation In the engine ; conse- quently, they must be made with the most perfect mechanical accuracy, but usually they are made slovenly indeed, having the form but not a particle of the necessary accuracy to make thera governors in fact. It is now admitted by all intelligent engineers, that graduated steam ports in governor valves are indispensible ; but to. make such governors durable and lasting, other items are as necessary, but they are not so easily obtained. The rasping effect of steam upon governor valves is more destructive than upon any other part of the engine. The valve seats in the Judson Go\ernor are made of the hardest chilled iron that will withstand steam cut for ten to fifteen years without abrasion. But this material is slow to work and makes the price of a durable and reliable governor a few dollars more than the soft shell, short lived kind, so many of which are now thrown upon the market by speculative governor makers. We have a Factory of twenty years standing, fitted up with machinery especially adapted, and hands skilled in this particular manufacture, and facilities for supplying any demand promptly, They are now in general use and supersede all others. We send them to all responsible men who favor us with an order, to attach and test 20 days before paying for them. This we feel called upon to do on account of the frequent failure of machinery, and especially Steam Engine Governors. They are without a rival, li^ Parties writing for governors will please give the diameter and stroke of cylinder and number of revolutions per minute, and, if ronvsnient, send .^ rnugh sketch giving the fcrin or style of the f-ngine, and state whether Portable or Stationary Engins. Also, state average boiler pressure. <* Notice. — An expansion joint or a copper elbow should be put into all steam pipes of four inches diameter and larger, to prevent the expanding steam pipe, when it heats up, from pushing on the Governor and springing it, causing the piston to stick or bmd and work stiff or to not work at all. No Governor warranted where the puUy put on it is of less diameter than marked in the last column of Price List. The above cuts (figs. 8 and 9) represent the Judson Governor akd Valves combined, designed for Portable Engines. They are strong, well proportioned, and perfectly fitted up, every Governor being critically examined before leaving the Factory. They are warranted to control Engines perfectly. Notwithstanding that Portable Engines require a more accurate working Governor than any other, with a few exceptions, they are most miserable specimens of workmanship; not one in twenty of them will control an Engine at all, and they stand motionless as they are useless. This being now generally understood, the cheapest and surest remedy for the evil is for Engine Builders and Purchasers of Engines to buy their Governors of a maker who has fitted up expressly to manufacture Governors, and has a reputation acquired for making the Best, which are the Cheapest. We have recently patented a method which, although more expensive, will enal3le us to make the seats hard without the temper being drawn by casting the casing around them, as in the old way. By this process the seats and piston can be tempered as hard as steel — an indispensable feature to a durable valve. We also, by the same method, insert steam metal seats and pistons in governors thatare to be used in localities where cast-iron is rapidly destroyed by acid or saline properties in the water.
