Original copies in printed paper covers are filmed beginning with the front cover and ending on the last page with a printed or illustrated impree- sion, or the back cover when appropriate. All other original copies are filmed beginning on the first page with a printed or illustrated impres- sion, and ending on the last page with a printed or illustrated impression. The last recorded frame on each microfiche shall contain the symbol — ♦■ (meaning "CON- TINUED"), or the symbol V (meaning "END"), whichever applies. Maps, plates, charts, etc., may be filmed at different reduction ratios. Those too large to be entirely included in one exposure are filmed beginning in the upper left hand corner, left to right and top to bottom, as many frames as required. It is merely a list of the hooks now in the Westinoiint Ivilirary, iirranged alphiihetically hy the name (real or aaHtiiiii'il) of till- autiior, and supplemented hy a list of the fiction, and of certain works suitahle for yonn^'or readers which the lihrary now possesses. There are no cross-references, Hence, as the purpose has been to select the form of an author's name most familiar to the jniblic, many real names have been discarded in favour of well-known pseudonyms ; as for instance, (Jeorgo Eliot, Anthony Hope and Mark Twain." ( »n tlie otlier haiul, "Alice in Wonderland" will be found under Dodgson, the real name of its author. A complete card catalogue of authors and sulgects, with copious cro.s.s-references is accessible in the library to all readers ; but to have reproduced it in book form would have involved an expenditure of time and money entirely disproportionate to the value of the work. Lists like the i)resent are, hiiwev(;r, compact and portal)le, and through their aid it is easy to become accpiainted with the character of the library. Finally, it should be remembered that the works noted hero constitute only the nu(;leus of the library. Additions arc now being, and will continue to be, made. Tliis fact accounts for the absence of many titles, which would otherwise bo inexplicable. I KIM.KS AM) liK(an.ATl()NS. Aflo/ifiil 111 June, IS'.i'.i. No. I.
