DELI8LE, PRINTER, 1, PORT DAUPHIN STREET 1876 CONSTITUTION or THE QUEBEC ACADEMY OF MUSIC I. The Association is called the Quebec Academy of Music. II. The object of this Association is to promote the taste for music in the Province of Quebec, to raise the standard of musical studies and regulate the same, to establish and open competitions, to confer diplomas and to grant prizes or other rewards for every branch of musical science. III. Bearers of diplomas may become members of the Academy by transmitting to that effect a written application to the Secretary. The latter submits such application to the Council which will grant or refuse it at its discretion. -_ I — IV. The affairs of the Academy will bo muiiagod by a Council composed of a President, a Vice-President, a Secretary, a Treasurer and of six other members. V. • The ofKcers and other members of the Council shall be elected, every year, by the members of the Aca- demy, at a general meeting converied for that purpose Oy the President, or in his absence or in his default, by the Vice-President, with the consent of the Coun- cil. Such meeting shall take place at the time of tho holding of the competitions. All the officers may be re-elected. VI. Five of those officers and members of tho Council shall reside in the city of Quebec and five in the city of Montreal. The President shall be chosen alternately among the members residing in one or the other of those cities. The Treasurer shall reside at Quebec. VII. The Council may appoint a Secretary pro tempore, in the absence or sickness of the Secretary. 5 — VI[I. The offieoM will i-omuin in office until tho appoint- mont of their siicceNsors. IX The Council may, with the assent of the unanimity of its momboi-s, expel fi-om the Association those who mi^^ht have become unworthy of forming part thereof. X. The Council may grant the title of " Professor of the Academy " to any professor, member of the Aca- demy, whose pupils (five in number at least) shall have obtained first class diplomas. xr. Competitions on the various branches or subjects of music teaching will take place, every year, alter- nately, in the cities of Quebec and Montreal, on the day advertised in one or more newspapers published in both of those cities, at least three months in ad- vance. Competitions may also be opened to bands of music and choral societies. 6 — XII. The candidates tn second chiss diplomas will he examined on the elementary notions of music, besides the examination on the branch or subject of that clnsH. XIV. ,y« The title of Laureate may bo granted, after a spe- cial competition, to anj^ person who shall have ob- tained a first class diploma for one of the branches or subjects above mentioned. XV. The pieces for competition shall be selected by the Council, or by a committee appointed for that pur- pose, and shall be published in the manner and at the period mentioned in the eleventh article. The selection of those pieces shall not be made more than a month before the announcement of the competitions. 7 — XVI. Each hand of music and each choral society whall also have their names entered in the same manner, and pay the sum of ten dollars. In case of failure, one half of tho sum paid as entry-fee will bo refunded. XVIII. Tho Judges of the various competitions shall bo appointed by tho Council. Thoir time of office shall be for one competition onlj ; but the same Judges may be re-appointed tho following year or any other year. XIX. There shall be a committee of examination for each branch or subject of competition ; nevertheless, one or more Judges may form part of another committee. XX. N"o Judge shall act in a competition in which a — 8 — near relation of his or one of his pupils should boa competitor. XX r. The President, or in his default, the Vice-President, shall preside each committee of examination ; and the Secretary shall act as such on each committee. XXII. The mode of voting and other rules concerning committees of examination may be established by the Council. XXIII. The diplomas shall be signed by the President, (or in his absence by the Vice-President,) and by the Se- cretary, and shall be sealed Tvith the seal of the Aca- demy. XXIV. In case of death, or absence for more than three months, of one of the members of the Council, the other members of the slid Council may fill up the vacancy thus created. XXV. The Council may confer the tit.e of honorary mem- ber of the Academy on any person (residing in Cana- da or abroad) remarkable for their musical knowled- ge, or on any person who may have rendered signal services to the Academy. XXVI. The Council may, for the good working of the same, frame such rules as it shall think proper, pro- vided such rules be not incompatible with the regu- lations of this constitution. The Council may also draft or prepare a programme of the subjects for competitions. XXVII. Thp Council may award prizes or other rewards to Laureates, to Bands of music and Choral Societies. XXVIII. General, annual or other meetings, shall be called at least eight days in advance, by a circular addressed to every member. XXIX. The quorum of general meetings shall be composed often members, and the quorum of the Council shall be composed of four. — 10 — XXX. At the general meetings, the members may be per- sonified by proxy. The President shall previously verify each procuration. XXXI. On the feast of Saint Cecilia, on the days of compe- tition, at concerts or other musical festivals, the mem- bers of the Academy may wear the following insignia, to wit : bearers of second class diplomas, the tetracord in silver ; bearers of first class diplomas, the same tetracord in gold ; Laureates, a seven-stringed lyre (Lyre de Terpandre), in gold ; and the Professors of the Academy, the same seven-stringed lyre, in gold on red riband. XXXII. The present bearers of diplomas of member or first degree shall be considered as bearers of second class diplomas, and bearers of diplomas of graduates or second degree, shall be considered as bearers of first class diplomas. XXXIII. The Treasurer hhall, at each annual general meeting, submit a report on the finances of the Academy. 11 - XXXIV. No article of this Constitution shall be altered, amended or repealed, except with the assent of the members of the Academy convened at a general meeting. Quebec, December 29th, 1875. :< 'r-
