We, the undersigned, Members of the MER- CHANT SEAMEN'S SOCIETY, do liorebv agree to conform to the Rules and Regulations of said Socie- tv, wherein the Society is obliged to appoint certain persons as President, Vice Presidents, Treasu- rer, Secretaries and Committee, to inquire into the afifairs of Seamen reported to them as being in want. I Rulf: II. That twelve of the Members of this So- ciety shall be sufllcient to call a meeting at any time, through the President and Secretary. f Rule III. That should any of Ihe Members of this Society be taken away by death, and leave any money in the hands of the Master of the vessel — the same shall be paid over to the Treasurer of this Society, and his receipt shall be sufficient in lieu thereof, for the said I Captain to hold ; and in case the friends of the deceased I shall call on the Treasurer the amount deposited shall be f paid over to his relatives, and their receipt taken for the ^ same by the Treasurer. Furthermore, it shall be the aluty of the Treasurer, as soon as he receives infor- mation that any Member of this Society has died, and that money is due him by the vessel, to publish the same for not less than one year, should no heir appear in the interim — the expense of such publication to be defrayed out of die sum deposited. Rule IV. That every Master of a Vessel or Steam- Jboat having Members of this Society under his command, ji^hall be obliged to give each Member a certificate ol* Membership. ; Rule V. That it shall be the duty of each Master jof a Vessel or Steamboat to report to the Society, the lumber of men in his employ who have enrolled their fames as Members, as often as called upon, and not at H^reater intervals than three months if not called upon. Rule VII. That Members shall be taxed accord- ing to the situations they hold, viz : each Master, 2s., each Mate, Is. Gd., each man, Is. 3d. currency per month during the year. RuLP] VIII. That the Secretary shall be ohliij-ed to publish a Re|)()rt of the state of the Society at least once in each year, in one of the Town pa[)ers. Rule IX. That it sliall be the duty of the Treasu- rer to pay into the Savings Bank ail sums lodged with liim wlien tliey shall have amounted to Ten Pounds ; and that his books shall be exhibited for inspection every three months if required. Rule X. That any Member of this Society who shall neglect to pay his subscription for the space of three months, and living within 25 miles of Kingston, will be excluded from the benefit of this Society, and shall not be admitted again, without paying 5s. Currency for said neglect and also all arrears. Rule XI. That any Member living at a distance requiring aid from this Society, must forward a letter of j recommendation, signed by a Physician, Clergyman, and; Magistrate of the locality where he resides, or a few re- spectable persons if the above cannot be obtained, wheni his case shall be submitted to the Committee. Rule XII. That the Committee of this Society? will thankfully receive any donation that Seamen, Own- ers of Vessels or others, may wish to contribute, without considering the Society in any way influenced by sucli donation. That the next Annual Meeting be held on the second Monday in January, 1844, at which time the accounts of the Treasurer will be audited. Rule XX. That the Officers of this Society shall consist of a President, 1st and 2d Vice President, two Secretaries, one Treasurer and eight Committee men, making in the whole fifteen. Three of the said Commit- tee, including one of the Presidents, to be a Finance; ('ommittce, and any three of the Committee to form a (juorum. Rule XXI. That Masters of vessels shall be account- able for the subscription of each man in his employ, when such man has received a certiticate of Membership. Rule XXII.
