'**** THE BERLIN, PUBLISHING CO., Printen, Berlin, Ontario. < 1 < < I < < I To THE Public:— - We want to draw the attention of Mayors, Reevee, Coun- cillors, and Ratepayers to our PATENT COMBINED IRON and WOOD BRIDGE. This is now nothing new in many coun- ties of our Dominion, but there are still many sections where they have not been introduced. Where introduced, they haye stood the test for a number of years, which shows that they axe just what they are represented to be, not only models ot simplicity but also for durability, strength, and cheapness, as well as being ornamental, they are unsurpassed. Those who have not seen these Bridf^s will consult their own interest by looking into this matter. Those who have had them built have shown their approval of them in the last few years by the success which our business has attained. We claim that if our Bridges are rightly put up, with all the latest improvements and taken care of the timber will last as long as the iron, and we have no hesitation in saying that the iron will last as long as an all iron bridge and will cost only a little over half. To prove what we say we will take the bridges of any county all through and build them at the prices of iron bridges, letting the difference between the price of the iron bridge and the price of our bridge remain in the hands of the municipality, they to pay us interest theron at the rate of six per cent, per annum, in consideration for which we will find men in good etpiiding who will undertake to keep up these bridges for one hundred years without any expense to ^he municipalityi except for floor, plank or joist, anything else belonging to the superstruc- tures being maintained by said syndicate, for the term as before mentioned, unless the bridges be carried away by a flood; that is to say, the bridges will be entirely looked after by us and kept in first class repair for the term mentioned. It will pay representatives to look into this matter as we can convince you as to the proof of the foregoing. DESCRIPTION OF THE BEAR PATENT 7^ COMBINATION BRIDGE ^ 1. This Bridge is built on Bcientific principles, the com- pression coming altogether on the timber, and the tension on the iron. There are no long or heavy timbers required in the con- struction of this Bridge, and not a great deal of any. 2. The timber in trusses is thoroughly protected by galvan- ized iron, so that it is not possible for the weather to get into it, thereby making it as durable as an iron bridge. 8. This Bridge is so constructed that there is not a joint but what is protected from the weather, and there is not a mortise or tenon ii^ the bridge. The simplicity of construction is one of the captivating features of the bridge. 4. Our Bridge is no burden to itself, but is the strongest Bridge for its weight that is built. u^r //^ c£
