Prominences is given to the illustration of the great trade routes, and of tlu' coaling and naval stations which give these routes security, and form connecHng links around the world. o. By repeating Aust."alia and the countries of the Far East, the ap[)roach to them by the Western as well as by the Eastern route is shown, and thus the continuity of maritime connection around the Emj)ire is illustrated more fully than in ordinary maps. 4. The relation of Canada to the Empire is also thus shown most effectively, and the Map was used at the Ottawa Conference of 1894 in the discussions on steamship and cable routes. 5. Boards Head. — 17 yards from edge of cliff, on W side of N entrance to Petite Passage. Fixed red light ; visible 6 miles in clear weather : lantern on pole, with white shed at base ; 3S feet above high water ; height of building from base to vane, 29 feet. Visible from N N E round through W to S S W. Shafner\^ Point.— On N. side of Annapolis River. Lat. 44° 42' 40" X; Ion. 65° '57' 12" W. Fixed white light; visible 8 miles in clear weather; white, square, wood lighthouse ; 55 feet above high water mark ; height of building from base to vane, 43 feet Indicates Goat Island Shoals. Harbor Light at A)iv(i})(ilii^. — On water's edge of P^ngineer's Lot, N E of of government pier; latitude 44° 44 51 N, longitude 65° 31 6 W. Fixed red light, dioptric; elevated 30 feet above high water mark, and should be visible a distance of 7 miles from all points seaward. After passing the black buoy off Marsh point, in ascending the river, vessels mav run directly for this light on an E by N j N cour.se to the anchorage just below the old government j)ier. Port Williams, or Marshall Cove. — South shore.
