which an assasuinlilM attack is made npou myself, and

before the election for Mayor is over, I tak% this method
of addressing you, and of promptly meting th<> dastardly
attack upon my good name.

Folly recognizing as I do the value of full and free
criticism upon those who are caiididates for public^trust,
I can not sufficiently deprecate that unfair and treacher-
ous style of assault which would delay aocns&tiou until
tfa« cpportunity of I'eply is gone. *I i»m sure you will all
racognizti the motives which prompted sueh a deed, and
stamp it with your stern disapprobation. If the article in
question is read by an unprejudiced person it will be seen

is nothing in this matter of whioh I hare reason to fear
the strictest investigation, and if I had submitted to^s*
sist in blackmail, or in being blackmailed by my b«i#
caluminaters, probably the Bobertson matter would nevav
have been heard ok My aQonsers were interested in
trumpet' up claims to the amount of thousands of dollirL
which were by my exertions struck out by the CourtF, and
they have resorted to this underhanded and street comar
gossip style of revenge. My character in both pnbtio and
