BLACKETT ROBINSON, PUBLISHER. ., 1883. iMi' PROSPECTUS OF THE -. JmSW ILLITSTRATJEn HISTORY' i OF 3564 I'oponto ^ the County of yorl^. |ROVIDED sufficient encouragement is extended to the enter- prise it is proposed to bring out an Illustrated History of Toronto and the County of York, which will contain : — . I— An Outline of Canadian History from the landing of Jacques Carher ; reviewing the Indian, French, and American wars; the efltplorations, discoveries, and vicissitudes of the voyageurs, mission- aries and early pioneers ; the national and political changes through which the country has passed during the periods of French and British rule ; and ending with the present epoch of material develop- ment and progress. This part of the work will contain finely executed portraits of a number of leading Canadians, both of native and "foreign birth, whose lives and labours have helped to form the histary of the Dominion, and so largely contributed to make the country what it is to-day. II. A Resume of Facts connected with the founding of the city of Toronto; a history of the growth and development of its municipal, parliamentary, and judicial systems; a record of its commercial life, lake traffic, and railway enterprises; together with incidents con- nected with its industrial and social progress; notices of its public men and well-known citizens, and other matters of interest to the community relating to the " Toronto of old " and Toronto of to-day; all of which will be interspersed with suitable illustrations. III. — ^A History of the County from its earl-est settlement, care- fully compiled from authentic sources, with special chapters on its topographical and geological characteristics, and natural advantages ; together with all such facts and incidents connected with the early settlements as will prove interesting to the present generation, and lend to preserve for a future age the story of the heroic part played by the pioneers in conquering from the wilderness this fair domain, now one of the most advanced and progressive sections, not only of the Province, but of the whole British Empire. This portion will deal with all matters of general interest comprised within the scope of a county history; including municipal organization and parliamentary repre- ::M "-•■?■- 64 m 3365 sentation ; the military record of the " Men of York " in the stirring times of 'i2 and '37; political topics and incidents; organization and growth of religious and educational institutions; the advancement made in manufactures, arts, agriculture, etc., etc.; all ably written, and presented in a concise and attractive form. IV. — A Descriptive History of towns, villages, and townsliips, with interesting facts connected with the local records of each, care- fully gleaned; description of soil, products and agricultural develop- ment; first settlers and incidents of their settlement; first schools, churches, marriages, births, deaths, etc., etc., so far as obtainable; personal incidents and reminiscences ; and many matters of interest, referring both to the olden times and to more recent events. V. — A Biographical Department devoted to sketches of the lives of the patrons of the work, alphabetically arranged by municipalities. This will be an important feature of the work, preserving in a desir- able form the family record, which might, through the ravages of time, pass into oblivion; thus handing down to posterity information of ancestral lineage that could not otherwise be readily preserved. In addition to the illustrations noted above, that portion pertaining specially to fhis county will contain a number of portraits of well- known citizens, pioneers and leading men of the different sections of the county, so executed as to add materially to the interest and value of the work. The literary portion of the publication will be in charge of gentle- men in every way well qualified to do justice to the work; while its excellent typographical appearance is guaranteed by the style and character of the books already issued by the publisher. The forth- coming volume will be printed on heavy calendered paper, from new type, and will be substantially bound in half-morocco, with marbled edges, gilt back and title stamp, and will contain about 800 pages. In a word, it will be the publisher's aim to produce a book which shall not only be an ornament to the drawing-room table, a useful and reliable work of reference in the library, but a source of pride and satisfaction to the inhabitants of the Capital of the Province and the Metropolitan County of the Dominion. As a large outlay will be entailed in the production of such a publication, a liberal patronage is necessary. If warranted by an experimental canvass, everything will be done to carry the work to a successful and early completion. To this end the cooperation of influential and public-spirited men throughout the courty is invited, and their cordial assistance asked, in giving such information as they only can furnish to the staff of writers engaged, thus conducing to its completeness, accuracy and value.
