THOMAS WHITE, 'v^ KU Ki m n mi w-jm^ ;^> Hismanal Miubaui PLACED DEC. 25th, 1888, IN ST GEORGE'S CHURCH, MONTREAL, BY THE CITIZENS O S" MONTREAL, %n ^QmoKxj OF THE HON. THOMAS WHITE. |ti OOijnmijiiiiiu The Honourable Thomas White; in whose memory this window has been erected, requires no long eulogy in the Dominion of Canada, and least of all in the city of Montreal. He had so identified himself with the political, commercial and social life of this country that his loss was felt as a public calamity of no ordinary kind. During the whole of his life he was actively engaged in writing for the press, first as editor of the Quedec Gazette, then of the reterbpji>tt}:k Retnew, of which he was one of the found- ers, then of the Ifamilicn Spectator. ^x\A lastly oi WvQ Montreal Gazette, yv\\\c\i he edited until he was called to a seat in the Cabinet. His knowledge of political and constitutional matters and his acquaintance with the states- men of all parties was exceptionally extensive; for his duties as corres- pondent, or as Member, or as Minister, had drawn him to the seat of government during e\ery session of Parliament, with two exceptions, since 185J. His knowledge of the commercial interests of Canada was equally extensive. He was long a member of the Montreal Board of Trade and of the Dominion Board of Trade, and, as a delegate to the lat- ter body, he had taken part in the proceedings of the National Board ^pf Trade of the United States at its meetings in Washington, St. Louis and elsewhere. He was a ready and eloquent speaker. Early in life he was deputed by the Ontario Government as Special Commissioner to visit Great Britain, and to give information as to the resources of Canada and the advantages it affords to emigrants, and often, in different cities of Canada, was he invited as a lecturer to discuss the social and political questions of the day. His ready pen and eloquent tongue largely contri- buted to mould public opinion for a period of thirty years r-'ii-Tjss:. -rrs:^. From an early period of life the temperance movement interested him and he continued to be a total abstainer to the day of his death. He was also, for a time, interested in Free-Masonry, andlafter he left Hamilton to reside in Montreal he was elected honorary Past Grand Master of the Grand Lod-e of Canada. He was a 'member of the Council of Arts and Manufactures of the Province of Qiiebec from its inception until he become a Cabinet Minister. The Anglican Church had in him an attached member. For many yearslie was'a delegate to the Synod of the Diocese of Montreal and to the Provincial Synod. He never ceased to take an interest in the deliber- ations of those bodies, and, as one of the governors of the Montreal Gen- eral Hospital, he was active in the practical duties of Christian life. In 1878 he was elected member of the House of Commons for Card- well, which constituency he represented until his death. In 1885 he was called upon to assume the duties of a Cabinet Minister, and, as Minister of the Interior and Superintendent Genera' of Indian affairs, he gave to his country the experience, the talents and assiduity for which' he was remarkable throughout life. It is not- surprising therefore that his siuklen death in the very prime of his usefulness, and maturity of his powers^xcited a sympathy most unusual and wide-spread throughout the land. In his native city of Montreal his death was very keenly felt, and a number of the citizens whose names are appended erected this window to his ,nemory in the church where he used to worship. W^att, ®tm0rml Urnbrmi PLACED DEC. 25th, 1888. IN ST. GEORGE'S CHURCH, MONTREAL, BY THE CITIZENS OF MONTREAL, OF THE • HON. THOMAS WHITE. 1 he Memorial Window represented bv the photographic reduction on the opposite page was placed at Christmas, iSSS, in the west aisle of St George's Church, Montreal, to commemorate the public and private virtues of the Hon. Thomas White. It is the last window in the -iisle and the next to the transept. It was designed bv Mr. Charles Elliott of London England, and was executed there, under the directions of Messrs bpence & Son,., of Montreal, who put it up in^the church. The size of the window is ,4 feet by 7 feet. The subject illustrated is from I. Samuel vu. 21 .• " And Samuel heard all the words of the people and rehearsed 'them in the ears of the Lord." It recalls that turning point in the history of the People of Israel when they inaugurated tiie change in their political .nstitutions which assimilated them to the surrounding nations, li.e colour cannot, of course, be shown in the photograph. It is very rich and effective. The drawing will be seen to be correct and firm, and the composition to be solemn and dignified. The contributions exceeded the amount required for the window. The surplus was applied to the qualification for a life-governorship on the Board of Management of the Montreal General Hospital for Mr. Robert S White the present Member tor Cardwell, in order that he might succeed h-'s father there also, and in a place which drew forth all his father's kindly sympathies.
