Arohdeaoon Gilson gave notice that it is his intention to move at the next general meeting of the Church Society, the following changes in the Constitution of the said Society : I. The removal of sections 2d and 3d from the statement of the objects for promoting which the Society in its constitution is stated to have been incorporated. II. Preyent ns, Lord, in all oar doings with thy most graoions favour, and further us with Thy continual help ; that in all our works, begun, continued, and ended in Thee, we may glorify Thy Holy Name, and finally, by Thy mercy, obtain everlasting life through Jesus Ohrist our Lord. Amen. merciful God, who hast made all men and hatest nothing that Thou hast made, nor wouldest the death of a sinner, but rather that he should be converted and live ; Have mercy upon all Jews, Turks, Infidels, and Heretics, and take from them all ignorance, hardness of heart, and contempt of Thy Word ; and so fetch them home, blessed Lord, to Thy flock, that they may be saved among the remnant of the true Israelites, and be one fold under one Shepherd. Prosper, Lord, the labors of those So- cieties of the Church in the land of our Fathers, which Thou hast deigned to use in the promotion of thin object, and which have nourished the Church in the Colonies : and bless in like manner with Thy Holy Spirit and Providential rmccour the Society in whose cause we are now met, and the undertakings which we have now in hand. " Prosper Thou the work of our hands upon us ; prosper thou our handy work," for the sake and through the merits of the same Thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with Thee and the Holy Ghost, one Gh)d, world with- out end. Amen. Our Father, which art in Heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead ns not into temptation : But deliver us from evil : For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, For ever and ever. CONSTITUTION A. ^'l;v J '''■■'. '1859. r,; \, ..'■ i In reviewing the proceedings of the Society for the past year, the Central Board regrets to observe a considerable diminution in the amounts raised both in the city and in the country, as will appear from the following Statement, extracted from the Trea- surer's books : — TREASURER'S STATEMENT. The following is a summary of the Society's receipts for the past year : — OENBRAL FVBPOBKS. Annual Subscriptions in Montreal, $1001 07 Amount contained in Boxes received from Montreal Parochial Association, 381 35 Collected after Sermon for Missionary purposes, 268 32 OoUected on Day of Thanksgiving, 75 80 1726 54 Subscriptions received from the Country, 849 43 Collected after Sermons for Missionary purposes,. . . . 278 03 Collected on Day of Tbanksgiving, 91 33 Amount received from Boxes from the Country, per Montreal Parochial Association, 12 64 Collected at General Annual Meeting, 1869, 122 75 Rents, Interests, &c., 79 75 1231 33 202 50 Total from ordinary sources of income, $3160 3T 14 Proceeds of Land sold, 664 00 " Loan returned, 84 00 Donation to Education Fund, 60 00 Balance of last year,. 1762 00 Making a total of $5620 37 Total Expenditure for the year, 4246 15 Balance on hand, * $13*74 22 WIDOWS AND OBPHANB' FOND. Amount collected in Montreal, $ 232 00 << " intheOountry 237 23 Donations, 22 00 Put to the credit of this Fund from the Fund for General Pur- poses, 280 00 Interests and Dividends, 696 90 Balance of last year, 360 19 Total, $1828 32 Amount invested during the year 1013 99 Balance on hand, $ 814 33 Total amount of investments for the Widows and Orphans' Fund is $16,310. : . . During the year there has been a decrease in the amount raised in Montreal of $267.10 ; and there has been a decrease in the Parishes aud Missions in the Country of $601.01. The Montreal Parochial Association has paid to the Treasurer the sum of $1,309.96, which includes $893.89 contributed by the Missionary Boxes* ' ^int* ? ti>'a ^--t^v; .. s' u^^ The income of the Society, from ordinary sources, has been $932.11 less than last year. The sum of $770 was raised in the name of the Society, and expended on local objects, independently of the Central Board, as allowed by the 7th by-law. This sum is not included in the income of the Society, as it does not appear in the Treasurer's accounts. h 16 $1408 have been contributed towards endowments, and $265 have been received from the sale of Books. The total amount raised within the Diocese during the year for Church purposes is $51288, which is $6652 more than last year. The diminution of the Society^s funds is a subject of much anxiety to the Board ; and it becomes a serious question whether it would not be well to restrict the operations of the Society to purely missionary work. In many Missions there is a demand for additional clergymen — a demand to which the So- ciety, in the present state of its funds, is unable to respond ; and moreover, the Yen. S.F.G. in Foreign Parts, states in its last report, that, relying on the liberal and independent spirit of Churchmen in this Diocese, it has been resolved to effect a further reduction of JC200 in its annual grant, which for the present year is £3,240, and from and atler July 1860 will be reduced to £8,040. The Board, therefore, seems plainly called upon to proclaim aloud the urgent need of a much more extensive contribution to the cause of Christ and for the furtherance of His Gospel. During the past year we have had to deplore the death of one of the most zealous supporters of our Society — the late Lieut.-Gen. Sir W. Eyre — who, during his official residence among us, not only felt a deep interest in the welfare of the Society, but ren- dered every assistance in promoting its objects ; and who, at his departure, gave expression to his earnest prayer, that it may " please Almighty God to bless and crown our efforts, so that " Gospel Truth might finally prevail, and become in every-day " life the rule, the guide, and solace of each individual in this « much-favoured land." During the past year aid has been granted towards the stipends of the following Clergymen, to the extent ot $1879 : — Bev. J. 0. Davidsok, " E. DuVbbhbt, J. ObIBBIiB, J. GODDBN, D. LlUDSAT, (( II II Bev. 0. A. WlTHIBALL. Ber. A. D. Lookhabt, " T. Maohiit, " W. 0. Mbbbiok, «' P.S. Nbvb, " E. G. ScTTOir, The following grants also have been made by the Central Board during the year : — To OowansTille Ohurch, $200 To Oore Church, 100 To Pigeon Hill Ohurch, 200 Brome Parsonage, 100 Berthier Glebe, 200 St. Andrew's Parsonage, 60 .f» - '^ .. ' ■ . *860 .; The following Reports have been received from the different Parishes and Missions : — ABBOTSPORD AND ROIJQEMONT. Rav. F. Robinson has much pleasure in being able to report that at Abbotsford several new names have been added to the list of subscribers to the Society, also a few former subscribers have increased their offer- ings ; the whole amount being somewhat in excess of last year's return. At the same time it is with sorrow he is obliged to add that several persons who contributed last year have declined to be helpers in the good cause this year. The almost total failure of the fruit crop, which, in this locality, usually affords a considerable portion of the income of the farmers may afford some explanation of the mystery, for it is a myttery how members of the Church, who undeniably feel a deep interest in her welfare and themselves value the ministrations of Boligion, can deny themselves iba privilege of being co-workers with those who are striving to " make known the glad tidings of salvation to those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death." But amongst a people who cannot heretofore claim to have contributed according " to their power," or " beyond their power,' a partial fkilure of the fruits of the earth cannot surely be an adequate reason for " withholding more than is meet." God grant that the real cause of their unreadiness " to give" may not be a latent disposition " to trust in uncertain riches," and a want of faith " in the living God." It is a fearful state with any man when " the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches " prevail to " choke the word, and he be cometh unfruitful" : and no dearth in harvest is worthy of a moment's thought in comparison of " barrenness and unfruitfulness in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ." Amongst the new subscribers is one family that had never been called upon to contribute to the Society but to whom the last report was sent. 17 The peniMl of the report awakened an interest in their minde, and led them to inquire at what time and in what manner the colleetioni were made, as they wished to become subscribers. This fact is significant, and while it indicates that the annual reports should be liberaly circulate ed in every mission, it suggests also that another agency might be em- ployed and should be employed to develope the resources of the Church in this Diocese. If the silent influence of a " report " can promote an increase of interest in the cause of Ohrist and his Church, how much more effectual, with the blessing, of Qod, would be the liTing voice of a special messenger of the Society, in arousing our people to a more lively sense of their duty and privilege 7 The amount raised during the past year is as follows, vis. Jamib JomiB states :— I am happy to say, that we are making a little improvement in all our contributions ; and I am hoping to see further improvements in the next year. Since the erection of the county Court House at Bedford, and the sessions have been established here, we have had the accession of professional men with their families. We have not yet been able to procure female collectors ; but I hope we shall have the help of the ladies next year. We are getting a musical instrument that costs from a hundred to a hundred and twenty dollars, and which we shall hope to accomplish in a few weeks. A breese of religious prosperity hr;^ lately sprung up among ns ; and which we are willing to hope will ere long swell into a gale. BERTHIER ■i Rbv. W. 0. Mbbbiok writes :— It is with feelings of deep thankflilnes to the Author of all good that I present a very satisfactory report for the past year. We have been privileged to see maaj tokeaa of real en- B eouragement ; a great advance bai been made toward! completing the purchase of tho Parsonage and Qlebe. Our Oburch has been thoroughlj repaired and painted and rendered more worthy in every respect for the high and sacred purposes to which it is devoted, and while thus able to speak favourably, so far as temporal objects are concerned, I am not without hope that the Lord's spiritual work also has made progress among Uf. The improvements effected in the Church are the result of the Ladies' Sewiug Circle, by whose praiseworthy zeal and activity, a very success- ful Bazaar was held. It is my pleasing duty to offer gratefUl acknowldgements to many Friends of Montreal, Sorel and other places who liberally assisted us ; and among those worthy of special notice as constant Benefactors to the Church of God in this Mission and in the District, 1 feel it due, to mention the names of Mrs. E. A. Clark and Miss Cuthbert who wbili responding also to other calls, have subscribed the sums of $100 and $160, respectively towards the Parsonage Fund. The following are the details of the amounts collected during the year. Church Society subscriptions $52.41 ; Sunday Collections, $68.80 ; Par* Bonage Fund (including half of the Society's grant) $670; Proceeds of Bazaar, $883 ; Pew rents (applied to support of missionary), $78.50 ; Sunday School purposes, $12.50 ; a thank offering, $20 ; missionary's donation to Cathedral, $4 ; total $1288.41. BROME. Rev. R. Lindsay writes : — We have much cause to be thankful for the most prosperous year this Mission has ever experienced in spiritual things. The oonfirmation was many times greater than any preceding confirm- ation, ^nd the numbers of the communicants have this year more than doubled. In temporal things we have completed the Church at Brome Corners which is a free Church with horse sheds. The Church and bvrying ground were consecrated in June last. At Knowlton which is the place of residence we have built a new Parsonage, a good substantial brick building which I trust will be a help to the endowment of the Mission for many years to come. In these works great liberality has been shewn by all concerned. As regards the Parsonage it seems but fair to acknowledge the great exertions as well as liberality of Mr. and Mrs. H. S. Foster. During the year we have got a handsome stone Font and Chancel Chair for the Church at Knowlton, and have also erected good horse sheds. Some explanation woald seem neCessMry for the manner, in which our collections for the Church Society are reported. Brome and Sutton formerly constitated one Mission. At their division the Bishop required 19 that Brome ■bonld gite $100 per annum to the Church Society. Th« ooUeotiont hare been taken up for the lupport of the Miaaion and from theae the $100 hare been paid to the Society, the balance to the clergyman. Hating ao much on hand and ao much yet to be raised, we petitioned the Biahop to allow ua to keep the $100 in the Miaaion thia year, for we really hare undertaken fully aa much aa we poaalbly can get through without leaving a debt, which is alwaya in a Miaaion, a cauae of hindrance to ita after progreaa, for no one wanta to aee a Subscription the accond time for the same purpoae. The amount raised altogether ia over $2200 BUCKINGHAM. RiT. Wk. Mobbis writes c—That he regrets that the amount collected thia year for the Church Society in his Mission ia not ao large as that of laat year ; thia may be in conaequence of a conaiderable balance still remaining unpaid of the debt due upon the Parsonage. The Members of his Congregation have however contributed very liberally the sum of $240 to purchaae a small Organ for the Church, which has rendered the singing department of Divine Service very efficient. The following sums have been collected : Rev. W. Morris, Annual Subscription, $7.60 ; Subscriptions and donations, $9 ; Sermon in aid of Church Society, $4.50 ; Sermon in aid of Widows and Orphans Fund, $6 : Total, $26. Which amount has been sent to T. B. Anderson, Esq., Treasurer of the Church Society. •;»■ J.ti ■'/;f j».i .::.), -i o; •)•.. CHAMBLY. Riv. J. P.Whitb: — In transmitting the Report of what has been done in this Parish for the Diocesan Church Society, I feel thankful for the continued prosperity of the good cause, for although the Protestant population of the Mission has lately much decreased, yet it is gratifying to state that the amount raised for various church purposes has not fallen much behind that of former years when our numbers and resources were larger. The collectors were zealous in the work assigned to them ; and in some instances they experienced pleasure from the cheer- fulness with which parties waited upon cast their contributions imto the treasury of this excellent society. This is. as it ought to be; for churchmen should feel it to be a privilege, as well as a duty, to help forward the work of the Society. As a sense of religion spreads amongst us, we shall all grow in self-denial and humility, and we shall be in- duced to labour each year, with increased earnestness for that branch of the Holy Catholic Church, in which our lot has been cast, and which like a city on a hill, stands alike admirable for the purity of its doctrine, the apostolicity of its orders, the mildness of its ecclesiastical discipline, and the venerable simplicity and solemn dignity of its public worship. r ^ 20 The following U th« •ooount of tb« oanal Bubaorlptiou and OoU««V ioni for tb« pMt year. SooTT.-~My people hare' fallen off a little 'in their Annual Subscriptions this year : but as^will be erident they have contributed libe- rally towards local objects, the amount being no less than sixteen hundred and fifty dollars. .^ . ~ It will no doubt afford great'satisfaction to hear that the interest o the peo^^.e in this Parish in the serrices and character of the Church is markedly on the increase, and I feel an assurance that if it continues for a few years, as it is now manifest, we shall embrace a large majority of the influential and respectable inhabitants of the parish. •.:■—;. ^^i EDWARDSTOWN. V''-0. From Rev. E. O. Sutton : — The amounts contributed for the rarions Church objects are as follows : Church Society's Subscriptions, $3*7.34) ; Sermons, Missionary purposes, $1.87} ; and Widows and Orphans, $3.75 ; Offertory, $23.30 ; Church work, $43.27|; Sunday School Missionary box $1.52} ; Church Library, $4.12 j; Toward's Missionary's support, $63.52}, making a total of $178.72, a large increase upon last year's total. With such a fluctuating population of Church people, the wonder is that so much has been raised, for we have again lost in numbers by removals. A new object for this Mission was very kindly brought before the people by the Bishop at his last visitation, viz, the wants of the Missionary, with a request that a certain sum should be raised for his support ; and in consequence, many have this year transferred their subscrij^tions from the Society to this particular object, which will account for a very slight decrease in the amount raised for the Society, though there has been none in the number of contributors. Th^ sum .named, by the Bishop has not indeed been realized, for the voluntary system is very uncertain and very un- equal, but it is possible, perhaps probable, that it may be another year. On the whole I see no cause for discouragement, but rather rejoicing that our holy work prospers through the blessing of God year by year. FROST VILLAGE. Rev. D. LiNDBAT : In making up the annual report for the Church Society, I am glad to find that the ordinary collection has not fallen 23 below the usual amount. I was in good hopes that I should have been able to report the payment of our parsonage debt ($700.) The Notes are ready to be paid, but owing to some delay upon the part of the late owners of the property in completing the deed, the matter is yet anfinished, for which I am very sorry. The Church in Frost Village has been cushioned throughout and the one in Stukeley carpeted, in both instances by the Ladies of each place. I am glad to say that the best spirit is evinced in providing all things decent for the House bf prayer. The visit of the Bishop, with the con- firmation has had a most blessed influence, and the number of our com- municants especially in Stukeley has been largely increased. Every year convinces us of the large field which lies before us, and how we ought to pray for more laborers. I would urge upon the Church So- ciety to have resource to the plan usually adopted, namely, in sending round a deputation, issuing an occasional paper describing the progress of the Church and pointing out what numbers there are to whom the Gospel is not preached. I am sure such information would awaken a dee- per interest and produce much larger results than we can individually efifect. The following amount has been raised : — Church Society, $66. 02; Mission Fund, Frost Village, $184.29; Sewing Society, $40.00; Stukeley Mission Fund, $87.00 ; collected by Ladies for Carpets, &c., $50.00. Total, 427.31. - '• ? ' >:-h »^ ^u "^ "' "• ■ ' FARNHAM. From The Rev. L W. Mcssen : — I commenced the discharge of my duties in this mission, on the first Sunday in December, and I have had therefore no Opportunity of doing anything for the Church Society. I am hopeful, however, of the future ; and I trust that at the close of another year, I shall be able to return a favourable report. ■t .' * GORE. '; ■*'f.'!;j * Rev. Joseph Griffin : — In submitting my Report, — before entering upon an account of the Ministrations of the Society — I would record with gratitude, the goodness and supierintendence of Almighty God, towards the Church in this Mission ; I would take encouragement from past experience of His blessing on my humble efforts. To review the past appears, to afford the best encouragement for the future to go forward with renewed vigor. When I came here nine years ago, there was no Parsonage, the only house I could find to lay my head in was a miserably constructed tavern, and the only building in the Mission, set apart, in which to conduct Divine Service — was scarcely deserving the name of Church. However, with the exertiians of my flock, and the liberality of friends II vfa ^i m >i from abroad, and the bleating of Almighty God, in whose name our work has been began and continued, some little reformation has been efibcted. Some little reformation is, therefore, apparent. The eoncarrent tea- timony of all ranks and parties acknowledge the change for the better in the Oore, unto Ood's holy name be all the praise and glory. When 1 call to mind the time of my arriral here,— that " day of •mall things," I am constrained to say, " what hath God wrought I" We have now a very comfortable Parsonage and Glebe attached. And our exceedingly neat stone Church, now nearly finished— -will deservedly rank among the handsomest of Country Churches, in the Diocese. A second Church at West Gore, has also been rooi^d in and is now being prepared for ceiling, which when completed will be a very neat com- fortable building. It would soon be fit for service, but for want of means. It may be proper to add, that although the ability of th« people is greatly below that of their neighbors, yet, so far as they retain the power, I believe the will is not wanting. The thanks of myself and my fiock are due, and I gladly embrace this opportunity of publicly recording our sense of deep gratitude in view of the kind liberality which has been extended to us by our frienda from abroad ; and though it would be invidious to distinguish indivi- dual donors, yet it may be permitted, especially to name the Lord Bishop and those Clergymen who have so kindly permitted collections to be taken up in their Churches, which yielded us some valuable aid, our thanks are also due, and are hereby tendered for the handsome do- nation of j£25 from J. J. Gibb, Esq., and for other material aid rendered by that gentleman, in the erection of our Church. The Settlers too, I am happy to say, have subscribed £26 besides a considerable amount of building material and manual labor. Notwithstanding, the Church will be still considerably in debt. The Incumbent has erected a wood- shed at £5 his own cost. '.:.,.', Though we have some things to contend with which serves to moder- ate our hopes, yet, it may be said upon the whole that this Mission is prospering in externals, and, I hope, not without some progress in spiri- tual things. Nevertheless, my hopes, are animated by something higher and more substantial than present appearances ; the exceeding great and precious promises of God's word, are more than sufficient to animate and en- courage me cheerfully to confide in the Divine blessing. May I be actuated by the Spirit of Him, " who went about doing good." May this Spirit take full possession of my heart, guide me in all my undertakings, and make me the favored instrument of accomplishing His own purposes in this part of His vineyard. Jombs acknowledges with derout thankfulness to Almighty God, a growing disposition on the part of his people to support the ins* titutions of Christ and His Church, as will be eyident on comparing the report of the present with tiiat of the past year. Did all my people mani« fest the like earnest piety and liberality that some do, we should at no yety distant day be well able to sustain ourseWes. The amount contributed to the Church Society shows an increase upon last year's subscription but does neyertheless fall short of what might reasonably be expected from so large and important a mission as this. From a desire to meet such an expectation, eyery means has been taken by the missionary for the attainment of this object, both in public and private, by sermons and special exhortations, by a large circulation annually of the Society's printed report, and by tracts and books bear* ing either directly or indirectly on the yast and to us vital importance of the work in which the Society is engaged. Although my own sap* port must of sheer necessity be urged upon the abilities of my people, yet the claims of the Church Society so far from being overlooked are always placed first on the collecting books and pui forth first in the order of application for aid. This seeming deficiency may after all perhaps be satisfactorily accounted for when it is seen in the Report how great have been our efforts for local purposes, intimately connected with the best interests of the Church. The missionary desires also to express his gratitude to those Ladies and Gentlemen who have acted as coUeotors, as well as to those friends of the Church who have so kindly responded to their call. The difBs* rent stations, have contributed as follows : Saint George's, Granby $312.35 Saint Peters, Shefford North 100.00 School House, Shefford Mountain 60.00 ml 'ii $472.35 26 GRENVILLB. - '•■•-- The Rev. P. S. Netb has forwarded only an incomplete Report, owing to the removal of Mr. Kains to Canada West, but he expects that gent- leman has remitted the balance of subscriptions towards the Cathedral fund and the collection made on Tbanlcsgiving daj. Besides these, the sum of $34.02 has been remitted in furtherance of the general objects of the Society, and the missionary has received $68.25 as stipened from the Congregation. This mission has lost a most active and munificent churchman, in the removal of Mr. Eains. HEMMINGFORD. From the Rbv. E. Dd Ybbmet : — The hope expressed in my last Report that the erection of a Church at Hemmingford Corners would be entered on has been realised. The Corner Stone was laid by the Ven^ Archdeacon Gilson, on the 19th of July last, and already the walls, roof and Bell Turret are finished. The new building which is a neat unpretending gothic structure of red and white briclc, will when finished seat comfortably about 150 persons. The whole of the interior remains to be completed, and if we can procure sufficient funds to carry out the design faithfully, I think it will deserve to be reckoned among the few Rural Churches in this Diocese in which the principles of Ecclesiastical Art have been attempt- ed to be carried out. The Church of St. John Baptist situated in the Eastern part of the Mission, and which was commenced in the spring of 1858 will be ready for service on New Year's day. Subscriptions towards the completion of this edifice were solicited of the members of our Church in Montreal and elsewhere, and I here on behalf of my Congregation and myself, beg to return our sincere thanks for their christian liberality which they will find more fully acknowledged in another part of this Report. I have also gratefully to acknowledge a grant of $200 from the Society towards assisting us in the completion of this Church. The following sums have been raised in the Mission during the year. Annual Subscriptions to Church Society, $61.10; towards Missionary's support, $46.3*7}; for Missionary purposes, $4.74; for Widows and Orphans, $8.85. Thanksgiving Day, $5.60. Towards erection of Church at Hemmingford Corners, $630. Total, $1315.66}. m Among the gifts to the Missionary this year, I hare much pleasnre la recording one from Wm. Besant, Esq., of 20 cords of wood. I cannot close this Report without acknowledging my thankfulness to several persons of the Church of Scotland for so liberally aiding tia in our efforts to erect a Church, and especially to Peter McNaughton, Esq., for the site on which our Church stands. HUNTINGDON. ■':ra Rev. Frbdebick Bcrt. — ^Presented by His Lordship the Bishop to this Incumbency in July last, I have the happiness to report the entire suc- cess of my mission. The work of the Lord here has progressed, for the God of our beloved Church has revived this portion of his Vineyard and it is green and flourishing. Both the Congregations under my charge have increased surely and rapidly. In St. John's Church, Huntingdon and St. Paul's, Hinchinbrooke, every seat is filled. At morning and evening hours of Prayer in the former and at the time of Afternoon Service in the latter Church, earnest and Church like assemblies may be seen. At a distance of 10 miles from the Parsonage on the first Tuesday of each Month, I meet a Congregation averaging 30, composed of persons who live 12 and 15 mile? from our Church and any Church, yet they belong to my parish. On the second Tuesday of the Month I have a Service and Bible class in the township of Elgin, 7 miles from my residence. On the first Sunday of each Month, I hold Divine Service in a School-house 12 miles from the Parsonage, for the benefit of the aged and others, who live seven miles from the nearea Church. Each Wednesday and Thursday as they pass, I hold a Bible and Catechism class for youth followed by au address and prayer for adults, who also I may add crowd in some instances, as on Sunday mornings, to hear the catechisings. So by the Scripture classes, at each of which 8 or 10 verses are recited from memory by the young, and this at 5 different points of my Parish, I reach those who but for these means of grace must be lost to the Church and religious knowledge. By these 6 classes and cottage Lectures, I am brought in contact for good with llT young members of our Church and with 240 adults. The chapter for the Day, as per Calendar, supplies the guide for profitable reading and a useful round of exposition. Previous to Morning Service on Sundays at Huntingdon, a band of seven teachers meet my Sunday School. At half-past nine o'clock School opens, then at a quarter-past ten o'clock I address all assembled upon the Collect and Gospel of the day, i. e. their lessons. Each preceding Friday I meet my teachers to prepare my Sunday lessons. Continually fresh faces augment our Con- gregations. These, for the most part, are brought in by systematic pastoral visitation. To carry out these my labours I have by times to m t, 'M joorney 90 milei per week, the areraf^ distance of trarel is 70 miles a weelc. All this toil is sweetened bj hearty welcomes, by anremitting attention, and a cheerful co-working on my people's part, and super- added, the Blessing of the Lord. To speak of the Northern District of my Parish, Huntingdon:— Another theme of gratitude, which shall be ever pleasing to my memory, is the valuable, cheerAil, earnest co-operation of John Morrison and J. 8. Lewis, Bsquires, the 'Churchwardens of St. John's. By their seal the secular department of Church labors, including my own temporal good, has prospered and the future brightens. I must now mention the exer- tions of Mrs. J. Morrison, the warden's lady — that lady with Mrs. Salter of Montreal were so warm and active in their zeal for the House of our Ood, that on Advent Sunday, I had the gratification of seeing both exterior and interior of our Ohurch able to vie with any of the " walla of cedar" in the town around. By their labors and the help of a few fellow members of our Congregation, the contributions of friends in Montreal ard one at Beauharnois with some resident here were put to good acoouixt, for the reading-desk, pulpit, chancel and windows with all that appertains to them present a seemly and decent appearance} and the walls within and without smile with cleanliness. A fence to the Church-yard is to be erected in the Spring. What good may not one or two earnest Christians effect? By this I thank every lady who labored for the good of our Zion. The southern division of my parish, Hinchinbrooke : Of this I have pleasant things to record. Through the activity and perseverance, and great sacrifice of time on the part of the Wardens, Messrs. Levers and Jas. M'Goy, matters appear healthy and progressive. The stone church, St. Paul's, has in the last Month been furnished with neat gotbic pan- nelled open seats. The next step is to build a pulpit, and at a future day, erect a spire with bell. The ladies of the church-wardens L:'ve procured material and made a very good surplice for the decent admin- istrations of the Services of their Church. Mr. J. S. Lewis is thankfully remembered in connection with this, as having made quite a reduction in the price of the material for the above vestment. If things prosper and the stream of affection for the Chinch proceeds at the present ratio my utmost desires will be realized. In visiting my people, I find it requires four months to visit all my church-members once. The wear and tear of Minister and equipage is great ; but health, open-hearts and hearths repay. To shew my people estimate my expensive work when contrasted with a Minister's income, I may state that in the past week (Dec. 15,) after alighting from my sleigh to hold a service and giving my horse, &c., in charge of two men by some means he started off from them with sleigh attached and ran for two miles making the sleigh a total wreck. On the 19th, Vr. J. S Lewis and Mr. J. Ball, editor of " Herald," presented me with a new sleigh the production of the united gifts of many of my people and a few other friends. There are three services on Sundays, viz; at 11, half past 3, and 1 o'clock, all of which it it most gratifying to see are fully at- tended. Lookhabt :— It gires me unfeigned pleasure in forwarding the yearly return to the Ohurch Society of our exertions in this mission to be able to say that our subscriptions this year hare nearly doubled In amount. Accompanied part of the time by one of my church-wardens I risited every protestant family in Kilkenny, which occupied a con- liderable time and which was no easy matter to accomplish as the houses are so scattered and the roads so bad in that Township. There was scarcely a family who did not give something as an offering to God and his Ohurch in the most willing manner when I called upon them, and when I consider the position of some of these people with large families to support and in some instances on very inferior land, I feel sure that they gave as much as they were able. I also visited every church family in New Glasgow and New Paisley, and in these places also I met with the most kind receptions. We now number between Seventy and Eighty subscribers to the Ohurch Society in this mission, a number which we never had before and which is very gratifying indeed, and shews that we are making progress in the good work. Indeed when I consider the itate of the mission when I arrived in it some ten years ago, and what haa been accomplished since then, I cannot help believing but the Lord has blessed the work. To his blessed name then be ascribed all the glory, for a Paul may plant and an ApoUos water, but it is God alone who can give the increase. It is true we have by no means accomplished as much as we could wish, but sufficient has been done to make us thankful to God so far, and to put our trust in him for the time to come. When X commenced my missionary labours in this place the Holy Communion w Pl e( d w 88 WM adminiBtered in both churchei with a eommon glaii and earthen plate. Wo have now a silrer oommanion servic* in each place purchaa- ed by the people ; and the churches have both been painted outside. The church at New Qlasgow has undergone considerable repairs. The seats which were in it at first have been replaced with pews. The vestriei which were ready to fall hare been firmly secured and newly plastered. The chancel which was before level with the floor of the church has been raised and instead of the huge boxes which were used as pulpit and reading desk, neat lecterns have been placed within the chancel. The ladies of the congregation purchased also a very nice cloth for the communion table, and they are now making an exertion to raise sufficient to get other trimmings which are needed for the church. I must not omit to mention the gift of a marble font from a kind lady in Montreal to the church here ; and with the help of the Ohurch Society and other kind friends, a glebe of 66 acres has been purchased which will be a great help towards the support of a clergyman in this mission. But above all I must not forget to state that the number of our com- municants has greatly increased, both here and in Kilkenny, and it is very pleasing indeed to see many of the young people who were admitted to the scriptural and apostolic rite of confirmation at the last visit of our much respected Bishop coming forward to the Holy Sacrament, and par- taking of the sacred emblems of a Saviour's love, whose blood* alone can cleanse from sin and by whose suffering alone we obtain the kingdom of heaven. The subscriptions for different purposes are as follows -.—Annual subscriptions to the Ohureh Society, $35 32] cts. ; sermon for missionary purposes, $3-1 ct. ; Widows' and Orphans' Do., $5-6 cts.; paid in from Killcenny towards Cathedral fund, $6 ; contributions for local purposes,. $96. Total, $145-38i cts. ORMSTOWN. 'NO BEMARKS. POTTON. Rav. J. Several of the Items here ipeoified exhibit an Increase on the Report of last year, whilst the total thus reported, hau been raised exclusively within the Parish, and is not swelled out by the introduction of any extraneous assistance. The whole of the Subscriptions have again been transmitted to the Parent Society, and with the addition of the amount collected, after the two Annual Sermons already mentioned, make up a total of $104.36, paid over in Ctuh^ this year to the Ohurch Society. The Juvenile Ba- saar, as indicated by its name, originated among the children of the Congregation, and although conducted upon a limited scale, realized the handsome sum above reported. But this laudable effort is yet further deserving of praise for the satisfactory manner in which it was managed throughout, and for its entire freedom from all those objec- tionable features, and feelings, which have sometimes marred larger, and otherwise praiseworthy efforts of a similar character. Among the different ladies, who most kindly assisted the children, and to each of whom many thanks are due, all will unite in according to Mrs. R. Kittson, a warm meed of praise, for her untiring and self-denying efforts, to promote the success of the undertaking. The proceeds of the Bazaar were appropriated in part, towards the discharge of a debt due for former repairs of the Church, and the balance is retained by the ladies, till, with some further addition, a su£Bcient amount is realized, for the erection of a much needed fence opposite the Church and Rectory. The contributions to the Endowment Fund, include annual Subscriptions, of similar amount to those before received; Arom those truly christian ladies, to whom the parish is already so much indebted, for their ever generous and ready help, in every " work of faith and labour of love." The balance of the legacy of the late Miss Mary Collins, was likewise paid in ; and of the bequest of this faithful young servant of Christ, it may be said, in the words of the Apostle, that her " deep poverty, abounded unto the riches of her liberality." These sums, detailed in the list of contributors, with a f\irther donation of $40, embrace the whole amount received this year, towards the Endowment of the Parish. The sum of $100, included under the head of local expenses, was con- tributed by some members of the Congregation, towards the discharge ,":"'■ ml 36 of a debt for home rent, due by the Rer. V. De Mouilpied, late French Missionary from Sabrerois. And under the same head of local expendi- ture, is also embraced an outlay of upwards of $80, paid by the Rector himself, towards the erection of a board fence round the Church lots, and towards the repairs and improyement of the Ohurch property now occupied by him. It is a pleasing duty, in this brief Report of parochial proceedings, to record the kind labours of James Huber, Esquire, and of Doctor T. E. Johnstone. These gentlemen, efficiently aided by several young ladies, and at the expense to themselves of considerable time and trouble, decorated the Ohurch with evergreens, in a very tasteful and beautiful manner, for the great festival of Christmas. And within its walls, upon that joyous day, a very large Congregation assembled, of whom seventy remained as communicants. Thanks are further due to Messrs. H. Hart, and Wm. Sheppard, for their kind assistance, most promptly rendered in collecting the Annual Subscrip- tions of the Society, and also, to Miss E. Laprarie, who again renewed her praiseworthy efforts in the Society's behalf. .(( ST. ANDREWS. >■»'> Rbv. R. Lonsobll writes : — ^In the present state of this Parish, it can- not be expected that much could be done for the Diocesan Church So- ciety. Great exertions are being made by the Congregation just now to supply pressing wants ; the Parsonage had to be raised from ruins and a habitable dwelling, now nearly completed, to be erected ; to effect which a large outlay is necessary. Independent of this there are other liabilities which the Congregation have to meet. Our Church also requires extensive repairs, while as yet we have nothing deserving the name of a Library for our Sunday School. As soon as we can pay our debts, I have no doubt that we shall do something for the Society, and that every one of my Congregation will give assistance towards the canning out of the Church Ministrations to our scattered and destitute people, who in many places have been too long neglected. It is sad to think of the deficiency there exists in means at the Society's disposal to send out devoted and faithful men into the destitute portions of this Diocese where there are many of our people deprived of the means of grace who with their children, if not, cared for, must sink into irreli- gion and wickedness, and will be lost to the Church if not to Christ. I am thankful to say that the Congregation has doubled within a few months, and the Sunday School now in its infancy numbers nearly forty chUdreu. • i. . ?h'U w^Utf'rf'i* y-m !.« ' i? ;i^- >fifr ^lV:'(i ?. ,**S..rt!'H !(<*>••; 37 .- . . . STANBRIDGB BAST. From Re7 J. Oonstantine :— I hare to acknowledge the same hearty eo-operation on the part of our OoIIectors as in last year. With respect to our general position there is no marked change, al- though we hare lost some of our congregation by removal to other localities. We are still quietly gaining ground upon a long established and dominant irreligion. It was remarked in the general Convention of the American Church, that Atheism was indoctrinating the American mind. This has been at work for some time, and it has come in like a flood upon us in past years from the infidel schools of the IT. S. under various covert forms, and has brought about a practical denial of all positive religion whatsoever in a large class. The observance of the Lord's day. Creeds, Sacraments, and public worship have all been levelled by this evil spirit of error. We have been enabled with God's help, to make some slight stand against it, unmoved by the waves of impiety as they break upon the Rock of Truth. There is widely spread also a latitudinarian spirit, which easily falls in with the prevailing irreligion, and is of a kindred character. It is the offspring of the various sects, each one having a system founded on opinions for which no authority can be claimed in favour of one above another, — and all being ready to unite in opposition to any external standard of truth. This opposition tends greatly to do the work of infidelity, and upon occasion is found ready to join it in its work of levelling to the ground anything which puts forward a Divine claim as external to man's will This is the old spirit of impiety against which religion has ever bad to contend. This spirit is too violent and indiscriminating to put any difference between truth and error, but rather seeks to confound them together. In no section of the country have these evil infiuences prevailed more than in this, and the result is an amount of indifference, or hostility to religion which it is melancholy to contemplate. In such a state of things it would be too much to expect that our own people have not been influenced by it, but there are signs of the dawn of a better state in an improvement which to be solid and lasting must begin at the house of God. It is satisfactory to be able to state, that a great improvement has taken plac9 in the condition of our community, which may be fairly claimed as due to the influencet the Church has brought to bear upon it. Other parties, as usual, come in when the work has been done to seek to divide the results, and take away the credit from us. This, how- ever, must be claimed for the Church, to whose benificent care the peo- pie in these parts are indebted for all that is valuable in their religious and social condition. This has been hitherto an almost unacknowledg- ed obligation. It is time the reproach of ingratitude were put away from among us. It is pleasing to observe a better feeling in a few ■J worthier minds, and it will doubtless conticue to increase, nothwith- standing the many hindrances there are in the way. Summary. With the above manifestations of the Divine fovor, it is our happiness to say we have been especially favoured during the past year. XaiM Deo. By the regular attendance and unflagging attention of many at tho regular services held in St. Paul's Church, Philipsburg, our hands hav* 89 been greatly strengthened, and bj none more so than by the venerable ex-Rector, who in the midst of growing infirmities has been enabled thus to continae the manifestations of his unwearied zeal and love for the worship of Him, whom for upwards of forty years he has been mer- cifully spared to serve in the ministry of the word. At Pigeon Hill also, such has been the zeal of the people for the worship of the Lord of Hosts that they have obtained a subscription of upwards of $1000 towards the erection of a house in which to worship the Ood of their fathers according to primitive custom, and in the use of our truly scriptural and beautiful Liturgy, and have so far succeeded in their praiseworthy undertaking, that a neat little Church edifice, 60 feet by 30, is now in the course of erection which we hope shortly to see completed and dedicated to the worship of Almighty God. The visit of our esteemed Diocesan, with that of the Bev. Canon Reid, and other of the Clergy, in June last, was truly a time of refreshing, when in the presence of a crowded and intelligent congregation at St. Paul's Church, thirty ^'three persons consisting of heads of families, and interesting young persons presented themselves for the scriptural rite of confirmation, thus publicly avowing the obligations of their baptism, which on the part of some had been recently assumed — ten adults having been baptized a short time previously and two that morning. The very appropriate and spiritual address to the candidates, and subsequent sermon by the Bishop, the many qualities of whose head and heart so eminently fit him for the onerous charge of this extensive and important Diocese, together with his interview on the preceding evening at the Rectory with several of the leading persons in the parish will be long and giatefuUy remembered. The following is a statement of various sums contributed during the year : Subscriptions to Church Society, $59.50 ; Collections for Missionary purposes, $12.05; Collections for Widows and Orphans, $8.75 ; Offer- tory 'collections at Communion in St. Paul's Church, Philipsburg, $16.18 ; Ordinary Sunday collections in St. Paul's Church, Philipsburg, $34.49 ; Collection for Sabbath School, $5.36; Collection after Sermon on Thanksgiving day towards purchase of Bell for St. Paul's Church, $5 ; Subscriptions towards the same object, $150 ; Pew Rent, $13 ; Sub- scriptions towards erection of Church at Pigeon Hill, $560 ; Gollectioiii on Thanksgiving day at Pigeon Hill towards purchase of Stone for New Church, $7.15; Donations towards repairs of Rectory at Philipsburg;. This addition is more considerable in view of the larg« sum ($400) added to the endow- ment fund by the exertions, chiefly, of the Ladies of the parish during the past year. The amount spent in tbd parish and that remitted to the Treasurer, with the pecuniary condition of the Church, will be found in the tabular statement contained in the annual report of the Church Society. The annual sermon in behalf of the widows and orphans of the Clergy was inadvertently omitted in consequence of the Revd. J. Irwin coming so late to reside as Rector. In addition to the stated contributions before alluded to, $25 were collected for the Irish Church Missions and $20 have been expended on books for the Sunday School. The offertory collections, appropriated to the use of the poor, have, since the settlement of the present Rector, amounted to $45.12. The High School at St. John's is continuing to do a good work in the community, under the careful, judicious and successful management of Mr. J. Smith. Other Protestant Schools in the parish, both male and female, are similarly instrumental in promoting the cause of scriptural education. f) ;i - SUTTON. From Rev. J. S. Sykis : — ^In this my first annual report of the mis- sionary work of the Church of England in the Township of Sutton, will be found a few facts which will bear testimony that during the last twelve-months, the Church has made steady progress. The congrega- tions at the Church, and the two School houses, each distant about four miles from the Church, one in the North and the other in the South part of the Township, have been steadily increasing. The number of chil- dren and young persons baptized have more than doubled the average of baptisms registered daring the last eight years in this mission ; only five out of the number baptized were born within the last year, the rOthers were aged from two to fourteen years. 41 I have still tinder my notice between thirty and forty children and young persons unbaptized, who with God's blessing and in his own good time, I hope to bring within the fold of our " Qood Shepherd " who said " saffer the little children to come unto me, and fbrbid them not ; fbr of such is the Kingdom of God." The Lord's supper has been celebrated on the first Sunday in each month instead of every second month as formerly, the number of com- municants at each service hare ranged from sixteen to twenty-two ; six new communicants have been added to the list. I am endeavouring to excite in the congregation at the Church, a more active participation in the musical part of the service, that we may " serve the Lord with gladness, and come before His presence with a song," psalmody has always been considered a very valuable and delightful part of our servicei and every person of feeling and judgment must have observed that the absence of it decidedly gives a languor and inefficiency to Divine wor* ship. The excellent and admirable Dr. Watts acknowledged the tedium and inefficiency of metrical psalmody. " If" said he " the method of singing were but reformed to a greater speed of pronunciation, we might often enjoy the pleasure of a longer psalm with less expense of time and breath ; and our psalmody would be more agreeable to that of th'. ' ;uent Churches, more intelligible to others, and more delightful to ouaelves. The following financial statement will also show that we have done something towards improving this department ;— Collections after sec> mons for missionary purposes are as follows : — ^At the Church, $6.80 i at the North School-house, $2.00 ; at the South School-house, $1.20 > at the Clerical Association meeting held in March, $3.90 ; total $13.90. After sermons for widow and orphan's fund ; collected at the Church, $6.35 ; at the North School-house, 1.05 ; at the South School-house, $1.61i total $8.91. For missionary purposes on thanksgiving day $9.70; subscriptions to Church Society from 6t subscribers $53.89} ; towards Clergyman's support $100 ; this is guaranteed by the vestry but at pre- sent only 14 names are on the list of annual subscribers towards the Clergyman's support, and the total amount subscribed is $91,00 which will be seen by the list of contributors at the end of this report. The Churchwardens will be glad to receive the names of new subscribers to this object. I take this opportunity of thanking those friends of the Church for their many acts of kind liberality in sending provision to the Parsonage especially for the 13 cords of wood presented to me last winter. Also to Mr. Asa Frary and his working bees, for cutting five tons of hay and placing it in the barn free of charge. By a resolution adopted at a vestry meeting, the $28 paid by me for four tons of hay, and handed over as a donation by my predecessor 42 towards liquidation of debt on parsonage, was refunded. I hereby acknowledge the receipt of the above amount. We have also given to the east end a more Ohurch like appearance bj raising the chancel floor and the Altar, and arranging seats on each side for the choir ; to enable us to do this, Hr. E. Kemp has very kindly given all the lumber, and Mr. G. 0. Dyer has furnished all the nails, kc.f and team to draw the timber to the Ohurch. Mr. Daniel Wyatt kmdly contributed to this good work by laying the floor. Offertory collections, $19.06. The Ladies' Sewing Society have undertaken to famish a spare bed- room in the Parsonage which will become Ohurch property when com- plete, and will always remind the resident Olergyman of the kind con- sideration and christian benevolence of the people among whom he labours. 16 new Members have been enrolled, the amount raised by work, &c.f $20, making the total amount raised this year in the Mission, $257.21^. VAUDREUIL. Rev. J. Pyki :— Our report for the past year shows I am happy to say a considerable increase amounting to over one hundred and sixty dollart in excess of the amount raised in this Parish for church purposes during he prec edlng year. This is a good sign, and it is satisfactory to find that ^he hope expressed in last year's report, " that each year may exhibit greater exertion and increased liberality," has not been disappointed. Did we but feel more deeply the important declaration of our Lord, " It it more blessed to give than to receive," we should never want funds either for our Ohurch Society or for our local church wants. God grant that as our christian privileges abound and are extended, and as our daily mercies temporal and spiritual increase, so we may feel more and more the increased responsibility that is upon us " to do good and to dis- tribute " in promoting to the utmost of our power the interests of the Church of Jesus, the Kingdom of God's dear Son on earth. In this report I think it my duty to make mention of donations tn money and produce presented to myself by members of my congre gation during the past year. From two kind friends I received £10, and from others in less favorable circumstances donations in produce amounting to about X4. I think it right to put these things on record as pleasing evidences of that kindly feeling subsisting, and which ought always to be maintain- ed between the Pastor and his flock. However small the gift, still as manifesting a regard towards and love for him and his, it is always rained and esteemed by the minister of Ohrist. The ladies of my con- gregation during the past summer, got up a Bazaar for the purchase of a new melodeon. I am happy to say they were even more successful than 43 thej anticipated. Tlieir work and labor of love was crowned with success and a sufflcv^at sum realised after defraying expenses to buy a new instrument, from the establishment of Mr. Pearce, Montreal. It has two banks of keys and is a very sweet toned instrument. I should not here omit to say how greatly indebted the congregation has been to Miss Vittoria Mathieson, who has kindly volunteered her services as organist now for several years, and with much satisfaction to the congregation. Annexed is a detailed account of what has been contributed. Bev. A. T. Whittbm : — ^In the village of Waterloo the subscriptions to the Ghurch Society this year are fully equal to other years, but in other parts of the Mission, the failure of the corn crop, which is the one they depend most upon for raising money, the low price of stock, and the scarceness of hay have, I believe, caused the subscriptions to be small. The whole amount is $4*7.35. Collection for Missionary purposes, $3.32 ; collected after sermon on thanksgiving day for the Missionary Fund also, $8.00 ; for widows and orphans' fund. West Shefford, $1.50 i Waterloo, $3.35. There has been raised in the Mission as usual $1 (^ towards the Clergyman's salary. •'-•••.• 5 EDUCATION. . - .. Tho Central Board again acknowledges tbe kind liberality of two friends of the Church, through whose kindness two sons of clergymen have received assistance to aid them in pursuing their studies at Lennoxville Grammar School. Extract from the Report of the Colonial Church and School Society for the present year : — KODIL SCHOOL. Tbe Boys* School, under Mr. Empson, numbers 191. The Girls' School, Miss Middlemiss, of 0. 0. & S. S. Training School, mistress, 161. The Infant School, Miss Robertson, under whom the school was ini- tiated, 96. There is a slight increase in the numbers of these scholars over last year, and more scholars might still be added Team repeated applicants for admission, if the want of room did not forbid. The free list is always full with a long list of expectants waiting for a vacancy. It is a pleasing fact that some of those who have been admitted to the school free because of their poverty have profited much by their privi- lege, and bid fair to gain a respectable position in society, and are already able to aid their parents through the means of the education they have received. • •' ^ ' . It is necessary that wo should at the present time make greater sacrifices than we have ever hitherto done for the giving full efficiency to the work of the Church in this Diocese. For doing this it is only needful that we should act in the snirit of the words of David — " O Lord our God, all this store cometh of thine hand, all things come of Thee, and of thine own have we given Thee." Then will our oflferings repre- sent both our means and our mercies. From what has been already stated, it will be evident that the wants of the Church are pressing. Numerous are the applica- ions which, from want of funds, we are unable to entertain. Through the instrumentality of this Society, there is offered to all, who recognize their stewardship in respect to whatever they possess, an opportunity of presenting of their substance to extend the ministrations of the gospel of our salvation. It is only by so doing that we, who are placed in trust of the blessings of redemp- tion, can prevent there being, in any portion of the Diocese, that most grievous of all famines, " not a famine of bread nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the word of the Lord." Let us then all give, as the wise men of old gave, of the most precious sub- stance. There is the same hand to receive our gifts, and the same blessing to reward them. " Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me;' : And may the Almighty Being, who has thus far prospered our Society, still vouchsafe to us the assistance of His grace, and dispose the hearts of our people to new and really self-denying exertions for the diffusion of the Gospel of His Blessed Son.
