Le SiEvn, The undersigned, in submitting tlic following Tables to the public, docs not claim all the merit of originating the mode of calculating Interest upon which he has worked, but having met with tlie rules, the idea suggested itself to him, that the arrangement and publication of the following Tables would afford useful aids to the community generally, and part icularly to the Danker, Merchant, and Trader. The action of the Provincial L(>gislaturc at its last session, in reference to the Usury Laws, has led him to extend the Tables of Interest at a higher rate than would otherwise have been necessirv, whiie he thiidcs that their extension to eight per cent, in the present work will be at a rate sufficiently higli i'or all practical purposes. The Tav.les op Commission will be found particularly useful : and as the undersigned knows of the existence of none in a similar series, he trusts that in supplying this desideratum in commercial calculations, he will only have anticipated the wishes of a large number of supporters of his undertaking ; and he ffatters himself, that the care he has bestowed on the calculations, — having computed each -. separately, — and the attention paid to the typographical execution of the whole, will enable him to offer to the Canadian pubhc a series of Tables unsurpassed for cor- rectness by any in the Province. P. LE SUEUR. Quebec, May, 1854, al le PtULES AXD EXAMPLES. The ])Cs1, rule which has yet appeared for computing Interest, i-! by multiplying the Principal by the days at which it has remained at Interest, and dividing the Product by 7300, if the rate be at 5 per cent. The reason why 7300 is a proper divisor is found by ihe following rule : — As simple Interest at 5 per cent, upon any Principal, will, iu 20 years, be equal in value to such Principal, and there being 7300 days in 20 years, so £l at Interest for that time will gain £1. In like manner, a greater sum, for a less time, will gain <£!, for every time 7300 can be taken out of the Product, arising from the Principal being multiplied by the days it litis remained at Interest. EXAilPLE. To find the Interest of £l for 20 years, at 5 per cent, per annum : — Days in 20 years 20X305=7300 And 7300^-7300=1 or £l ; Or, To find the Interest of £292 for 10 'pys at 5 per cent, per annum :-— 292X100=20200 29200-^7300=4 or M. The time when Interest, at the rates in this Work, will equal any Principal, is found by the annexed Table, which arises from the following rule : — As the ])rin(Mpiil : 100 ^ Kate ,ioO='-^y*^^"'=^""^'* 6 rccn1 1 2 'lOOX ,nn:r.= 50 Time. 100 lOvl 10000 ami 10000 -r 50 200 years 1 lUO X 1 = 100 100 100 10000 and 10000 -r 100 100 years H 100 X l,fi0 = 150 100 100 10000 and 10000 -r 150 GG,^ years 2 100 X 2^ 200 100 100 10000 and 10000 -r 200 50 years 2i 100 X 2,50 ^ 250 100 100 10000 and 10000 -r 250 40 years 3 100 X 3 =^ 300 100 100 lOOoO and 10000 -r 300 S^ years 3^ 100 X 3,50 =- 350 100 100 10000 and 10000 -r 350 28 f years 4 100 X 4 = 400 100 100 10000 and 10000 -r 400 25 years 4i 100 X 4,50 =^ 450 100 100 10000 and 10000 -r 450 22^ years 6 100 X 5 = 500 100 100 10000 and 10000 -r- 500 20 years Ci' 100 X 5,50 = 550 100 100 10000 and 10000 -r- 550 18 i-f years G 100 X r, = GOO 100 100 10000 and 10000 -!- GOO IC J years H 100 X G,50 = G50 100 100 10000 and 10000 -^ G50 15i';, years 7 100 X 7 = 700 100 100 10000 and 10000 :- 700 14 5 years 7i 100 X 7,50 -= 750 100 10() 10000 and 10000 -f 750 13 J years 8 100 X 8^ 800 100 100 10000 and 10000 -f 800 12-J years. EXAMPLE. To find a divisor for | per cent : — Days in 20 years 7300 days. Time when the Interest will equal the principal at ^ per cent, by the foregoing Table 200 years. Number of years 20 7300x200=1,460,000, and 1,400,000 -r 20. ..73,000 the divisor for ^ per cent. ; Or, Days in 1 year 365 Time when the Interest will equal the Principal at ^ per cent •. 200 years. Year 1 365X200=73,000. The sum which will give One Penny per diem, is found for the different rates by dividing each divisor by the number of Pence in One Pound. EXAMPLE. What sum will give One Penny per diem Interest at h per cent, per annum ? Divisor for ^ per cent 73,000 Pence in <£1 240 73,000 X 240 = Jt:304, 3. 4. or 304J.
