The carriage, a long disused state landau, was opened for this special purpose at the request of the Pope's all-powerful nephew, Count Pecci, and, in spite of the terrific heat. His Holiness most graciously abstained from raising a parasol. Preceding and following the Pontificial carriage were mounted guards commanded by Count Pecci, and a picturesque incident comes when Monsignor Delia Volpe approaches the carriage as it stops, kneels and kissing the Pontificial ring, implores a blessing.
