 TH E late Major - General WOLFE 
 was born at Wefterham in Kent, in the 
 year 172.6, He entered upon his military life in 
 1740, when he fliould have gone with his Father 
 in the expedition to Carthagena, but being fuddenly 
 took ill, was prevented.

 battle of Fontenoy, where he drew encomiums on 
 
 his admirable condua' from His Royal Highnefs. 
 
 He was prefent in almoft every other adion, da-

 colonel of Kingfley's regiment, which he formed 
 and difciplined. This regiment particularly dif-

 In the Expedition to Louisbourg, he was fecond 
 in command ; and here he did what he would 
 have done at Rochfort. The fenior officer had the 
 honour of obtaining this valuabk acquifition 5 but^ 
 truly the gallant Wolfe deferved it. He landed 
 on a fhore which the enemy thought was inac- 
 ceffible ; and he gained the fummit of a precipice, 
 they thought infurmountablc. . ,

 Thus was Cape Breton taken by the intrepidity 
 and heroic ardour of General Wolfe,

 The fuperiority of tHe enemy's rjumbers, the 
 flrength and fituation of the place, added to his 
 own ill flate of health, might have disheartened 
 the braveft general from undertaking fo momentu- 
 ous an enterprlze. But Wolfe knowing the Ser- 
 vice of his country demanded all his diligence, ufed 
 every ftratagem of war to force the enemy from their 
 entrenchments ; which not having the delired efFedl, 
 I)ei ALONE, Jungly in opinion^ formed that noble 
 refolution to land. 
 
 Another precipice, like another Louisbourg, pre- 
 fented itfelf to hirni. He was the firft who endea- 
 voured to gain its fummit ; with difficulty he 
 accompliflied this arduous attempt by the help of 
 the grafs, boughs, &c, his men followed the noble 
 example, and he affiftcd them one by one.

 What he did afterwards needs here no recoun- 
 ing, fince it is recent in all our memories. But let 
 it be remembered to latcft poftcrity, that when he 
 received a ball in his wrift, he only wrapped up 
 the wound in his hankerchief, and continued on 
 the ficlci of battle; and foon after another went 
 through his body, which necefiitated him to be 
 carried off. When in the laft agonies of expiring 
 life, he heard the chearful found they run! he cried 
 with emulation, who run? and being told the ene- 
 my, he faid, then thank God I die 
 CONTENTED, and died immediately. 
 
 So lived and died the Conqueror of CANADA.

 try called him.
