In ofTering to the Congregation a brief statement of tlie lirst year's proceedings of the Tuinitv Ciiurcu Dismrrr Visrnxc SociETV, we desire to recognize the gracious liand of Ilini, who has deigned to employ it as an instrument in conferring many benefits upon the indigent Aiinilies residing -witliin tlie sphere of its operations. Circumscribed as tlic limits of the District, and unknown as tlic objects who have experienced the Society's aid, are — it cannot be supposed that the Avork it is engaged in, and the good it is silently accomplishing, could be generally felt and api)reciated. The main object the Society has held in view, is the spiritual necessities of our poorer classes — and in order the more eiiec- tually to accomplish so desirable an end, it has engaged the services of a Clergyman, whoso whole Pastoral labours are devoted to the poor families of the District exclusively. To their temporal wants, however, they have not been unmindful. To meet this exigency, (and a fearful one it is, as the Inhabitants of our city can testify,) some Ladies of the Congregation have formed themselves into an Association, under the title of a *' Clothing Society," and actuated, we believe, l>y a spirit of Christian Philanthropy, have devoted a portion ot JTi 6 every week to tlic preparation of articles of wearing apparel, the nintciiiils in ii gn-nt measure having been liberally supplied by thcmsolve.-? — or by sums collected for tlii.s i»urpoisc. These have l)oen distributed to the most deserving ; and the spirit of gratitude in which these donations were received, seemed strongly to prove how acceptable this particular assistance has been. To meet the severities of a Canadian winter, a quantity of lire-wood has likewise been distributed in portions among them — (o those more particularly who were unable, through the depression of the times, and the scarcity of employment, to obtain a sufficient sui)i)ly of this essentially necessary article. They have accordingly felt this to be a kind and invaluable aid. Independently of this, the poor requiring such assistance, are indebted to the Society for the distribution of bread and oat- meal — and under a provident expenditure, this we believe has conferred a benefit as great as acceptable to them, while in seasons of sickness they have received the kind and partially gratuitous attendance of the Medical gentlemen whose names are attached. In connection with this supply of their temporal exigencies, the "Word of God has been circulated among them — and by the enquiries set on foot by the Clergymen of the Church — and their truly valuable auxiliaries the Members of the District Visiting Society, it may thankfully be said that no family in the District, (attached to our communion,) is without a copy of the Scriptures. Many are in possession of the Book of Common Prayer — while the number of Tracts distributed have afforded them a means of instruction, as well adapted to their understandings, as it is calculated, under God, to be of lasting benefit to their souls. From observation, we believe, these means have been blessed by the great Head of the Church, to the production of a more general attendance on the means of grace, on the Sabbath day; while many a parent has been induced to place his children in the Sabbath School, where they have received the benefit of Scriptural Instruction. Such then, is the design, and such have been the objects of the Society during this first year of its existence. I ( In concluding, the Pastor of the Churh would take this op- portunity of urging on the Members generally, the n('(;c.»sify for kind and persevering endeavours to carry out still further the objects contemplated by the Society when first originated. Ho is aware that to the Ladies in particular, (to whom his thanks are due,) there must be at times a sacrifice of feeling, and that the engagement of a District Visitor will entail the exercise of much Christian forbearance — but he trusts that the consideration of the importance of the work, the blessings conferred, and the fact that when thus engaged tlu!y are following the footsteps of their great Exemplar, " "Who went about doing good," and in his desire to do the will of his futlier, associated with "Publicans and Sinners," they will be induced to persevere, looking for their reward from him who said, "whosoever shall give to drink" " a cup of cold water, only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward." (Mat. X. 42.) To the gentlemen visitors a similar acknowledgment is made for their kind co-operation — which doubtless, if persisted in, will be attended with a like reward. To the Medical Gentlemen who have given their professional service to the destitute sick, he offers his sincere thanks — and reminding them that they who devote their "talents" to the services of the Lord who " took tlicir infirmities and bore their sicknesses," they shall not be forgotten when he returns to say, " Inasmuch as you have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me." (Mat. xxx. 40.) Believing, then, that the object is one which must meet the approval of the great Head of the Church, to Him would he recommend it for his blessing. And beseeching Him to pour His grace on this and every other kindred Society, may he give zeal with hope, energy with patience, to every member of it, in this their design to promote the temporal and spiritual good of their fellow men.
