 j^^ ATI-'HVILLIC the subject of this pul)lication is situated on the Coaticooke 
 J river three miles above its juncflion with the Massawippi and is on the line 
 /of the (irand Trnnk Railway. The villaj>;e was previonsly called Smith's 
 Mills named from their owner Mr. Hollis Smith, who afterwards became 
 the Hon. Hollis Smith. At an earlier date it was called Hollister's Mills, or the "Hollow", 
 Ball's Mills, when owned by James Hall, but it was first known as Pennoyer's Kails, becanse 
 Squire Pennoyer erected the fiist <?rist mill on the Coaticooke River abont th** year 1812. 
 
 On the north side of the river Messrs. Brooks and Smith had a large boardinj>^ 
 house for their workmen, which afterwards became a hotel. For a g^reat mnnber of years the 
 mannfadluring industries of the town were controlled by Brooks and Smith, namely the Hon. 
 Hollis Smith, and Samuel Brooks, M. P. P. Senator Cochrane, when a young man clerked 
 in a .store kept by Mr. Kennedy, which was situated on the .same .site as the one now owned 
 by Mr. C. O. Peterson. 
 
 The Waterville Post Office, was established September, 6th. 1852 and the Post- 
 masters have been successively, F. Webster, G. White, Israel Wood, B. A. Haskell, Charles 
 Brooks and the present post-master L. W. Wyman, who was appointed in 1867, the duties 
 of which position he has discharged with faithfullness and general satisfadlion. Mr. Wyman 
 has been identified with all the progressive movements which has placed Waterville, in the 
 enviable position which she holds to-day among other villages of the Townships. Mr 
 Wyman, enjoys the honour of having been the first Mayor of Waterville, since when he has 
 held many other public positions of trust.

On the mornin<f of the 3otli. of July, 1S98, Watervillc, by a disastrous conflaj«;ration 
 lost a coJisidcrahk- nuniher of her industries, but ne\Lrtheless, it is still the home of the 
 greatest sprinj^ bed fadlory in the world, the firm of (ieo. Gale & Sons, niannfadflurers of 
 Iron and Hrass Heds and Spring mattresses. The zeal and perseverence of the gentlemen 
 who have had control of this business for the past twenty years, has been amply rewarded, 
 i by the realization of the extensive trade which to-day they hold in the connnerical world. 
 
 The Dominion Snath Company, of Sherbrooke, recently located in VVaterville, and 
 carries on a large business in the manufadlnre of Scythe Snaths, Rakes and Cradels. The 
 famous Norton Jacks are also manufactured in the machine shop owned by K. (). Hopkinson. 
 
 Waterville has two churches, St. John's Kpiscopal, and the Congregational. The 
 Rev. R. C. Tamb.s, M. A. is rector of the former and the Rev. (t. H. Craik, B. A. pa.stor of 
 the latter. Waterville, Model School enjoyed the honour of holding .second position among 
 other schools of the province for a considerable time. 
 
 Mr C. O. Swanson, member of the Department of the Interior, having control of the 
 branch of Scandinavian emigration, who has met with such phenomenal .success in the 
 discharge of his duties in the North-west has his home in Waterville. A half-tone of Mr. 
 Swanson's residence appears on another page of the Souvenir, also a half tone of Mr. Swanson. 
 
 Francis Gilbert Gale, the mayor, has for a great number of years, been clo.sely iden- 
 tified with the prosperity of the town. Mr. Gale, was born in Stanstead, near Smith's 
 Mills, Qne., June, 12th. 1855. He is a son of the late Geo. Gale inventor and patentee of the

 j^entleman who has recently jnircluLsed the farm of Mr. Thos. Arnistronj^. The handsome 
 residence and farm of the late Jas. Mcintosh Ivs(|. has jxi.s.sed into the hands of W'm. Clark, 
 his nephew, b\- whom it is now carried on. vStandinj^r on a eommandiiijr i)roniinence about 
 '^ of a mile north of Waterville, is the neat home and farm of Messrs. R. (S: J. Johnston. Among 
 the mannfacturinji;^ industries and stores mention mi},dit be made of the jj^eneral .store of Mr. 
 C. (). I'eterson, which certainly does credit both to Mr. Peterson, and the town. The tem- 
 perance hotel under the ])roprietorship of Mr. H. T. Sunbury elicits ji^eneral .satisfaction 
 from those fortunate enouj^h to enjoy its hosjMtality. The steam yacht "Cecil" owned by 
 Mr. Will. vSiMi<fiii}i^s, affords an o])portuiiit>- of enjoyiu}^ the unrivalled .scenery of the Coati- 
 cooke River.

 mentioned "Mapleside" the residence of Mr. J. R. Ball, "Loch Crael" the residence of Mayor

 W. Wyman, Mr. J. H. ()s<,^ood, Mr. W. Somerville, Rev. (i. H. Craik B. A. Pastor of the 
 Congregational Church, Ccuncillor Jan:es McCiovern. and Councillor M. L. Hodgson. 
 
 Among tie half-tone portraits are photographic reproductions of Philip Colquhoun, 
 B. A., M. I)., a yoiuig physician who has recently located here and who already has an extensive 
 practice. Mr. W. H. Ward, general manager of Ge. . (rale &, Sons, Bed Works, to who.se 
 business al)ility may be attributed to a great extent the phenomenal growth of the firm.

 There are certain advantages that Waterville pos.sesse.s, which innnediately 
 recommends it to capitali.sts and manufacturers as a desirable place to locate. About a half a 
 mile below the town in the gorge of the Coaticooke River is water power sufficient to drive 
 the wheels of many factories also to generate electricity for lighting and other purposes. 
 This power is yet undeveloped and awaits the action of .some enterprising company or 
 individual to realize its value. The beautiful .scenery in and about Waterville offers many 
 attractions both to the tourist and sportsman.
